The incredible Xabi Alonso thread 2009.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Looks like it is just between us and Barca for David Villa now 😉

There's not a lot of players you can sign that will even come close to Alonsos quality. But some possible targets may be;

Palombo
De Rossi
Hamsik
Cambiasso
Yaya Toure
Moutinho
Martinez
Miguel Veloso
Toulalan
Aquilani
Defour
Ramires
Melo

Out of those players, only De Rossi, Palombo, Cambiasso and Toure would be good enough as a direct replacement imho. Maybe Hamsik aswell.

The rest have potential, but would be a much bigger risk.
If we're allowing him to leave, we better have someone lined up. Agreed price and everything. If not, we'll shoot ourselves in the foot, big time.
Ramires who plays for Brazil? I don't think he's even a CM.
He's a central midfielder Ken. He's lacking a bit physically though for the Prem.
He's signed for Benfica anyway, I just saw that on Wiki.

This is really is the Barry Saga all over again; with us on the other end.
You've argued yourself into a self-masochistic tizzy over this. Why are you so obsessed with this 'karma' idea? The Barry offer was a run-of-the-mill transfer bid. He said he wanted to move on to play in the Champions League, we bid, we were rebuffed (with O'Neill desperately trying to claim that one remark wrongly reported by LFCTV was a huge tapping up affair). It wasn't part of some megalomaniacal galactico project, with regular attempts to bypass the club and unsettle the player and endless planted stories in the press. Unless you think every transfer is 'karma' I'd drop the allusion.

Come on GK, we definitely bypassed the club and unsettled the player. Remember Gerrard talking about how much he'd love to have his mate at our club etc? What have Real actually done that Liverpool didn't do with Barry last season?

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

It's more like Gerrard to Chelski and I'm not tolerating this limp liberal crap about 'karma'. You may as well dissect every damned transfer there's ever been. Crap!

It is very similar. We went after a player who had no apparent desire initially to leave and unsettled him. The club did not want him to go , but then set a huge price on him. You either pay it or leave it

Real "We want Xabi Alonso."

Us "He's not for sale."

Real "Sell him to us"

Us "No Fuck off"

Real "Go on"

Us "Ok give us £40m"

Real "That's too much"

Us "We know we don't want to sell him, but that's our figure if we do"

Real "We will give you £23"

Us "What part of take it or leave it don't you understand"

Real "English peegs"

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Daily Mirror reports that Sporting midfielder Miguel Veloso is a close target for Aston Villa, Everton and Liverpool. Veloso (23) looks certain to join a Premier League club.

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill is today described as the favourite to sign the player with 7 caps for Portugal.

The self-flagellation on here is absurd at the moment. Apart from the whinings of the histrionic Martin O'Neill (a fact most have been happy to note elsewhere but are ignoring here because it upsets the absurd 'mirror image' argument), what was wildly different about the Gareth Barry approach compared to, say, the Keane bid, or the Harry Kewell bid, or the Torres bid, or the Crouch bid, or just about any other bid, apart from the fact that people have been linking Alonso and Barry in their minds for a year and can't stop linking them now? One might as well moan every time anyone bids for any player, 'We deserve that for bidding on players ourselves'. I mean, it's such soggy thinking it's swelling people's ankles!

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

But as you said yourself, it's just like most top-level transfers. So why are you (or anyone else) so angry with Real Madrid? What have they done, with regard to Xabi, that's so different to all the other transfer sagas you mentioned?

Because he's our fucking player?

Let's be honest, it's a sport, it's rivalry and you protect and support you're own. Yeah it's hypocritical but so what?

Madrid are beyond most teams in terms of being a law unto themselves. We might not have courted the whole Barry affair too well, but these cunts have gotten away with murder over transfers for fucking years.

So they can shove their fee and their inflated egotistical glamour club up their arses.

He played a hybrid midfield role for Brazil, but reading Tim Vickery's blog, I got the impression that he is more of an attacking midfielder and he said that he has played a lot on the left for Cruzeiro.

Ahh, okay. Maybe he's a bit of a Diego type player then. I read a couple of scouting reports from various sites and they said he was a defensive/central midfielder. He can probably play in a number of positions then. Either way, I think he has the potential to be a very good player. He's known for his work rate, marking and determination according to an interview with him after the Con fed cup.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Nah, Diego is a proper footballer. This guy, like you say, has loads of energy, pace and determination.... needs to develop the finer details of his game a lot though. One to keep an eye on.

On an aside, is that LB Sissoko or something still at Porto or has someone signed him?

He looked fantastic against the Mancs. So did their DM actually.

Cissokho is still at Porto, his deal fell through cause he failed his medical.. But the deal could still go through as AC Milan are still interested.
15 mill euros..

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Hmm, that's a lot. Seen much of him that game aside?

I just checked and he's only 21... still very young.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I've only seen him in CL matches, and he has impressed in every one. As you said young, pacey, great attacking and defensive ability. He owned the left side at Old Trafford, and played with a confidence thats rare in such a young player.

Will no doubt move on, he'll probably go AC Milan if they can work out a deal.

How good is the scouting department at Porto though? They always seem to find great talent from across the globe, nurture it and sell with a huge profit.

No flagellation here old chap. In my simple little mind it's the same scenario.
I was critical of our attitude, just as I am critical of Madrid's.
We don't want to sell, they keep pestering us and are then up in arms when we set a daft price. The other significant similarities are that neither player put in a transfer request, and players from the proposed buyers keep making come and join us remarks.

Real are quite irritated with us for not wanting to sell Xabi at their price...............

""Liverpool have adopted a position that is making it very difficult for us and right now we can see ourselves distancing ourselves from the player."

"There are people who are a little bit mistaken when they speak with Real Madrid. When we ask after a player they think it's a great economic opportunity and they go beyond what is reasonable. We are looking at alternatives to Xabi – players who have a lot in common with him."

We should have made it easy for them evidently

Real back down on Alonso transfer

Valdano admits shopping spree means they cannot afford Liverpool midfielder

Rafa Benitez, the Liverpool manager, looks to have won his battle to keep Xabi Alonso after Real Madrid's sporting director Jorge Valdano suggested the club were being priced out of signing the Spain international midfielder.

With Madrid still gripped by Ronaldomania and sales of the player's No 9 shirt set to break all records, Valdano gave the strongest indication yet that Real will not be prepared to meet Liverpool's valuation for Alonso. He said: "Alonso is our priority, if he fits with our budget, and this does not seem to be the case. We are very far away from Liverpool's figures.

"Liverpool have adopted a position that is making it very difficult for us and right now we can see ourselves distancing ourselves from the player.

"There are people who are a little bit mistaken when they speak with Real Madrid. When we ask after a player they think it's a great economic opportunity and they go beyond what is reasonable. We are looking at alternatives to Xabi – players who have a lot in common with him."

Real are understood to have reached an agreement with Franck Ribéry that they will sign him next summer. Using a tactic that worked last year with Cristiano Ronaldo, it seems the Bayern Munich midfielder is being lined up as a 2010 galactico.

Valdano said: "After the three massive players we have signed we can afford to wait. Ribéry is right to commit himself to the club where he has a contract, but let us see how his career develops. Everyone knows that Real Madrid are interested in him. But life is long and if it does not happen this season it can happen next season."

The suggestion that the astronomical spending may now have to stop will do little to dampen the euphoria of Real fans who yesterday cleaned the club out of Ronaldo replica shirts. Almost 3,000 were sold in the first two hours of business and stocks had run dry by closing time last night. But not everyone paid the €85 (£69) price, with around 300 stolen within hours of them going on sale at the stadium shop.

The demand for Ronaldo shirts has so far out-stripped those for fellow new signing Kaka, who sold around 600 on the first day. David Beckham famously sold a million shirts in his first six months at the club but Ronaldo looks set to top that if the differences in the two players' presentations are any indication. Beckham filled the club's 5,000 capacity basketball arena back in 2003 when he was presented to supporters. Ronaldo managed to fill the 80,000-seat Bernabeu stadium.

The Real Madrid president, Florentino Perez, was hailed almost as enthusiastically as Ronaldo by supporters but he may yet face a fan backlash for failing to land any top Spanish talent this summer. Alonso was most supporters' choice to be Real's next big signing because he is one of the heroes from last year's European Championship triumph.

Only two of the team that conquered Europe play for Real and, after missing out on David Villa, fans are desperate for Alonso to sign. But Valdano admitted: "It is proving much more difficult to sign the top Spanish players than the top international stars."

Despite the club distancing themselves from any more big-money acquisitions, additional signings have not been ruled out. Valdano said: "If we signed two or a maximum of three more then we would be covered."

He also admitted his delight at having beaten Manchester United to the signing of Lyons striker Karim Benzema. Valdano said: "We are glad to have got him. He is just 21 years old and he has a great future. He is powerful, two-footed and he has all the desire that a young player should have."

It now seems that the only way Alonso will leave Liverpool is if Real can include players in the deal to bring the price down, but Valdano admitted the club were struggling to off-load surplus squad members because of their reluctance to leave.

He added: "Despite the fact that the market is slightly depressed we have had a lot of offers for our players but in a lot of cases it is difficult to persuade players that they should leave."

Wake up you arrogant RM fucker we dont see it as a great economic opportunity because hes our player, contracted for three years, and we DONT FUCKING WANT TO SELL HIM!

I'll be interested to see what alternatives they come up with. Good luck with that Real.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Strange how in recent interviews how they state that there are not many players with the ability to switch play and control a game, but they won't pay over the odds and will find someone else with similar qualities. Anyone? If there is, they won't be much cheaper than £40 mil for Xabi. Plus he is Spanish so helps in the 6+5 nonsense.
