Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

This just seems like an attempt to get Xabi to speak up and request a transfer.

Fuck off Madrid.

Xabi keeping tight-lipped on future
by Toby Davis , 18 June 2009

Xabi Alonso has refused to be drawn on his future, prompting further questions about where he will be playing next season.

The Spain midfielder was asked a direct question following Wednesday’s Confederations Cup clash with Iraq as to whether he would be disappointed if he remained at Anfield after the summer.

But in what could be interpreted as an ominous sign for Reds fans he replied: “I cannot answer that. I have already said everything.â€

Alonso has been linked with a return to his homeland with big-spending Real Madrid openly admitting they were keen to recruit the playmaker.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez, however, has insisted that the Spaniard is not for sale at any price, prompting Madrid’s sporting director Jorge Valdano to admit they had given up the chase.

But the midfielder claimed lingering doubts about the future of many of Spain’s stars was not affecting their football.

"All we can do is train as normal,†he added in AS. "It is not something that we talk too much about. Everyone has their future to think about, but it does not create tension or nervousness in the group. We are very focused on our goal. "

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Depends. It does tend to suggest he's still thinking of pastures new, but it also suggests he's not going to ask for a move, which is one of Rafa's conditions for selling him. Don't despair.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Neets, we both want Alonso to stay, that's always been the case.

Unlike the Masch situation, I feel Alonso has a fair grievance against the club (well, Benitez) after last year.

True?

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Thinking about it further, he said he's already said what he wants to say and that was that he was looking forward to his 5th season as a Liverpool player. Maybe the refusal to comment on it was because he only wants to talk about Spain and not get drawn into other conversations.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Yeah he's probably fed up after the debacle of last seasons summer transfer shenningans

I agree, I just said that in the Mascherano thread. I'm just hoping the grievance isn't bigger than his desire to play for Liverpool.

And I think if we really want to keep him we have to go that extra mile to show that we want to keep him to compensate for trying to sell him last summer.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

McManaman was treated, if anything, worse, and he's now sneered at as 'McMoneyman'. I'm beginning to find this 'will he forgive the club for being so horrid' pretty tiresome. Going back to the Shankly era, players have been treated pretty brutally at times without being treated like saints for 'tolerating' playing on for LFC. Anyone would think Alonso is bigger than the club.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

No one's saying that G-Mak, but think of it how you will, it's a case of managing humans before managing them players (objects), the human needs to be kept happy. There is a lot more 'player power' in the game now, so if a player is unhappy they can determine where their future is. 'Treat them mean and keep them keen' is all very well but pointless if it means cutting your nose off despite your face and losing a player that you want to keep.

He was treated shabbily, but he was in poor form for the better part of two years, so he should really just take it on the chin. Ultimately it's acted as a kick up the arse of sorts and it's shown that there was cause for concern and room for improvement on his part, evidenced by his response on the pitch.

Like many, I'm just bored of this whole Masher/Alonso thing now. We're all moving in the one direction and ultimately if you're not with us then it's time to move on for the best of all concerned.

I don't disagree, I just find the 'black versus white' moralisation of a dilemma that any manager faces when dealing with a limited budget a tad unfair. The idea that a cloven-hoofed Benitez is playing games while Saint Xabi suffers in silence is really tiresome. Singing Xabi's name last summer was great, but it's dragged on so long he now seems to matter more than the manager or the club. The fact he can't even say anything positive about his future here is beginning to really piss me off.

liverpool losing alonso and masher?

I haven't disputed that. I've said if from this point he, or Mascherano, still leave, it's on them. As long as what's been done publically has also been maintained behind the scenes, LFC have done enough to show them both that they want them to stay if they still insist on leaving, then at least we can be reassured that we done all we could.

However, I will maintain that Rafa should go the extra length with Alonso to show he wants him to stay because, unlike Mascherano, it was Rafa who instigated Alonso moving on, so he should repair that damage.

That last bit's the key thing, Rafa came out and made that statement of intent weeks ago, which lets face it is quite un-Rafa, if Alonso's still got the hump and can't be big enough to move on then that's his problem.

I want him to stay but this whole thing is becoming so fucking drawn out and boring, and it seems we've got the same situation with Masher.

Yeah, but he's saying nothing. He's not milking it, he's not courting the attention, instead he started the summer by saying he's looking forward to his 5th season here and has since tried to refrain from being drawn into anything.

Sorry to cut in, but Rafa has said he wasnts Xabi to stay, Alonso has made clear he wants to stay. If Xabi is referring to his earlier comment saying he has nothing more to say, the situation is clear. I think he and Masher are angling for a pay rise.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has seemingly confirmed that his Anfield future is in some doubt.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez looks under increasing pressure as the long-term futures of his midfield stars Alonso and Javier Mascherano appear far from certain.

While Mascherano's agents have held discussions with Barcelona, Alonso has intimated he may also be looking for a better deal elsewhere.

Speaking in South Afirca, where he is competing in the Confederations Cup with Spain, Alonso stoked up the speculation surrounding his future.

"Would you be disappointed if you end up having to stay at Liverpool next season?" he was asked.

"I can't answer that question," he replied.

Benitez has already insisted he does not want to sell any of his key players this summer, with the club releasing a statement last week stressing their desire to keep the midfield duo.

I'm starting to think we're better off fucking him off and bleeding madrid for 20-30mill for him.

[/quote]Regardless of your opinion of Rafa. That is one of the dumbest posts ever. Its almost offensively myopic.
You would rather Xabi becomes your instrument of revenge than we go into the biggest campaign in years with a stable and happy squad!
Youre a dick.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

i'd rather alonso stayed but like most i'll take 30 million and hope rafa's learned a lesson here that these players are human and that his actions as a manager has consequences.

no idea who we'd replace him with though and if some idiot comes along and claims lucas can do the job they're clearly off their head.

oh and herr come on try and develop a sense of humour it is silly season after all.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Gotta love our players suddenly turning into a bunch of cocks once they hear about Real/Barca's interest, all for their 5 minutes of self-importance, no doubt Alonso and Masch will declare their love for the club and their focus on the coming season after the confeds cup is over.

Arby has a valid excuse, Alonso is just being controversial if he's said that in the tone it looks like "ooh look at me," yes he has had a great season, but surely he understands he was being shipped out last season as he had been gash for a good while. Masch, masked indeed, masking the whoring of himself out to Barcelona via his agent, and unless its just to get better terms on his contract, I don't like it at all. He was "rescued" from West Ham not so long ago, Rafa went through the two bellends to get his loan move permanent not so long ago, he made all the right noises not so long ago, so at the first sign of another big side in for him, he authorises a flirt away.
