i'd rather alonso stayed but like most i'll take 30 million and hope rafa's learned a lesson here that these players are human and that his actions as a manager has consequences.

no idea who we'd replace him with though and if some idiot comes along and claims lucas can do the job they're clearly off their head.

oh and herr come on try and develop a sense of humour it is silly season after all.
[/quote]You arent joking. You would genuinely think 'yeah fuck you Rafa' so what humour am i missing?
I am staggered that any fan would even thing about this in the terms you are.
I would say i expect better but given the history....

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Not sure what everyone is getting so worked up about. Alonso is a good player but not irreplacable. If he wants to go then let him go, just like Mascherano, Arbeloa and anyone else who doesn't want to play for us anymore.

The assumption that he is acting out some kind of 'revenge' on Benitez is a little presumptuous too really. At the end of the day he is Spanish, he has played here for 5 years and it could just be that he likes the idea of playing for one of the big clubs in his own country. Its perfectly understandable.

Say if an English guy was playing for a top team abroad, had made his name there but had always wanted to play for us or United. Would hardly be a surprise if he considered it, especially if said English team was in the process of buying lots of other top players.

the humour was in the reference to slapping rafa in the face.

as for alonso coming out with what he has i challenge ANYONE to fail to link alonso's attitude with rafa'a actions last summer. as i say for 30 million pounds its a lesson worth learning, it could have been much worse.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Why do we have to lose Alonso in order to learn a lesson?

What guarantees are there that any lessons will be learnt? Or that we'll get 30M if he does try to force a move?

The preferred outcome is that he stays here at Anfield.

A very good and sensible post about this whole affair especially the second paragraph. Afterall, who is Mascher getting his 'revenge' on? What would have Rafa learned about the way he treated Masher?

As for Xabi's quote, it is out of context... the whole thing is this:-

Asked if he would be disappointed to start next season at Anfield, Alonso told the Mirror: "I cannot respond to that. But each player thinks about their own future.

"It's clear that on the outside there are reports about your future, but you cannot do much and the only thing you can do is train normally."

Not exactly committing his future to us wholeheartedly but not exactly saying he is off too.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

yes, there is certainly a lesson to be learned here;

when a player is going through a sustained slump rafa shouldn't look to get rid.

I'd suggest you and Xabi do some fucking growing up then.

Rafa's come out and expressed his desire for Xabi to stay and reiterated that the club 'wants' him to stay.

Whatever method Rafa used last season, Xabi had been in poor form for the best part of two seasons and was rightly under pressure for it, he's turned it round and everyone was seemingly a winner. Carrying on this grudge is playground stuff, it's pathetic. Rafa made a mistake but has now done all he can to request Xabi stays. It's Alonso who's acting like a cock now, he owes something in the way of honesty to the fans at least, instead of using the club as some stick to beat Rafa with. If the club don't matter in all of this and all he's arsed about is his bruised ego, he can fuck off back to Spain as far as I'm concerned.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

if xabi does indeed fuck off then he is using his treatment last year as an excuse. After a sustained slump what did he expect rafa to do? He should count himself lucky, rafa usually looks to get rid after ONE poor season never mind two.

He's using it now and milking it for all it's worth. If he wants to go he should just have the balls to say it, instead of worrying about looking like a cunt, the fans aren't stupid, they know he's not being forced out, he plays for the club at the end of the day, and those fans that watch him every week and who supported him through last Summer's troubles, deserve MUCH better.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

It's actually really funny if you look at only facts and full quotes from Rafa and Xabi, and then read this thread.

Amazing how much false drama can be created on an internet forum.

'I've given liverpool 5 good years (well technically 3 xabi) I want a new challenge in my native country'

if he said that, seriously what fan could complain?

Yeah but what else would we do with our Summer?

In basic terms, Rafa's made a statement weeks ago that he and the club want Xabi to stay as he's important to us, Xabi's done little to quash rumours that he's off, so...

Benitez didnt say he wanted him to stay, he said he's not for sale. no story here

xabi didn't have a slump for 2 years. that's an exaggeration

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I would like to take this opportunity to make it clear that whilst I am somewhat unreasonable about Alonso and my desire for him to stay, I am not in agreement with all of Rage's posts on the matter.

Thanks.

Yes he did. He said BOTH of those things. Do a quick search. He said we're really happy with him, he's one of our key players and he's not for sale.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

but 9 months earlier he'd tried flogging him to some backwater in turkey. what were the words to our anthem again? don't remember a line in there about ditching you 'cos you wanted to stay at home for the birth of your first child and spending a season fighting back from injury.

Jesus Christ Rage, you're irritating the shit out of me with this bollocks, let's just forget the two years of mediocre/shite form shall we?

Don't know why I bothered digging this out, just to justify it to morons:

Rafa Benitez has rubbished reports in the Spanish media that an agreement has been reached with Real Madrid for the transfer of Xabi Alonso.

The midfielder has been linked with a move away from Anfield this summer but the Reds boss has poured cold water on suggestions the Spain international is set to leave.

The Liverpool manager said: "The situation is clear, we do not want to sell our best players and that includes Xabi.

"He had a very good season for us and can be an important player in the future. There is no agreement with Real and we want him to be part of our plans going forward.

"Xabi himself told our club magazine only two weeks ago that he was looking forward to his sixth season as a Liverpool player. Why should he want to leave now?"

Benitez added: "Xabi's agent came to see me recently to talk about the future. It was a surprise for me and I pointed out to him there were three years left on Xabi's contract.

"I asked him if the player was happy in Liverpool and he said yes. It was a short meeting."

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

"Benitez added: "Xabi's agent came to see me recently to talk about the future. It was a surprise for me and I pointed out to him there were three years left on Xabi's contract."

Fishing for better terms? It's the only thing that fits really.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

yes it was a short meeting as xabi can no longer stand rafa! otherwise they would have gone had paella together.

and as for fishing for better terms, maybe paternity leave was no 1 on the list for next baby?

Eh, not really. I think after last summer Alonso was well within his right to see what Rafa's plans were for him this summer. I would have hoped that meeting with Rafa making it clear he wanted to keep him would have been the end of it, but unfortunately not.

In fairness, I think that final quote by Rafa is a bit harsh. It's a blatant failure to acknowledge that Alonso had good reason to seek assurances - "It was a surprise for me and I pointed out to him there were three years left on Xabi's contract", there were 4yrs left on it last season but it didn't stop us considering selling him.

The impression I got was as if he's using the contract against Alonso, but anyway, it's a tough job and I guess you've got to be hard, but occasionally he could be a bit less 'cold' about it all.

All in all though that's a real statement of intent, he wants Xabi to stay. Ball is now in Alonso's court and he's refusing to play it would seem.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

You could well be right Anita. I would like to think that if that was the case, it would be Xabi in his office rather than his agent, but I have no idea what their relationship is like.

Oh right, so no Liverpool manager can contemplate working on a limited budget by sacrificing a player who'll fetch a big fee? YNWA means signing everyone up until retirement? Extraordinary. It's soap opera madness.

who said anything about retirement? as for limited budget whatever! your comments are more soap opera madness - i was merely referring to his injury ravaged season and the obvious fallout over his wive giving birth

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

xabi was in a slump, rafa wanted to sell xabi for a lot, buy barry for peanuts and put the difference towards other signings.

the. fucking. end.
