The incredible Xabi Alonso thread 2009.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Yeah, she's very vocal about Tevez

'I don't want us to sell Xabi to fund the Tevez deal'

And Keane

'He wanted to sell Xabi to fund the Keane deal'
[/quote]

Yes, you are right Brendan well done

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

to be fair all the Xabi's wonderful, we were right not to sell him, and we'll be rubbish without him stuff is rather tiresome time after time.

Agreed.

Having said that I still don't understand why we'd even be contemplating the sale. The defense is fine - can improve but still comparable to any in the world. Midfield is fine - can improve but still comparable to any in the world. Front line - one superstar striker, one very hard working right wing and ...... that's about it.

Xabi is a fine player without reaching the heights of a Gerrard etc. Whatever level he's reached isn't the point; he fits very nicely into the team right now. We all know the area that's crying out for a change and tinkering with another area that isn't failing is asking for trouble. I don't know why we'd risk it. Just keep the team as close to what has been successful as you can and try to improve that area which clearly needs improving.

Agree with all of that, but (though I recognise you may not agree) I simply don't believe it's lost on Rafa either. If we were to contemplate such a sale, a pound to a penny says that would only be the case if the player had given some indication that he himself was considering a move.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

“ My idea is very clear, he has three years left and we don’t want to sell him.

“He has said he is happy here. He is saying that in every single interview.

“We want to keep key players, the spine of the team. If we want to do business we can do it with other players. It’s not a question of selling players we don’t want to sell.â€

I'm sure you could get compensation for this. It doesn't seem an appropriate way for a superior to be acting. I advise you to sue Asim.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Good news: Mad Martin's up to his mad tricks again:

O'Neill says he won't let the Villa star leave on the cheap and it looks as though Liverpool will have to go close to matching the £18million offer they made for Barry last summer.

"The price obviously with a year left to run is a different issue," said O'Neill.

"But by the same token he is an England international player, he has captained his country and he is still only 28 years old.

"He wouldn't come cheaply even in this day and age."

Keep it up, Marty.

If he makes it clear he wants to come to us, rather than City or Spurs, we'll get him for less than that. £9m is my guess - half of last season's required fee.

If he goes to any club outside of the CL places, he will make himself look like a greedy, clueless, lying cunt.

Now that the spoilsports have banned cockfighting, I'd very much like to see Martin O'Neill fight Gordon Strachan. They could be smuggled in inside someone's pockets, or a vintage snuff box, and then released into a little boxing ring on a table. It would be a magical spectacle.

Would Barry want to go there though?

Neither have European football next season and Villa (as things stand) are better than both.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

last year of his contract - anything over 8 million i sheer madness - if he wants to come to us then villa will get desperate and if it doesn't happen now it'll happen for less than 5 million at Xmas. Infact that's what we should offer. 8 million now or it'll be 4 million in january or free next August. Can we not agree something with barry as he's in the last year of his contract?

if he wants to play champions league he'll have to come to us. there's no room for him at utd or chelsea and he's too old for arsenal.

no way should we get shafted by that cunt MON.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

JAVIER MASCHERANO has urged Liverpool not to sell Xabi Alonso – while expressing his desire to see compatriot Carlos Tevez at Anfield next season.

Speculation continues to rage over Alonso’s future, despite Rafael Benitez repeatedly stating he does not want the Spanish midfielder to leave.

Real Madrid presidential candidate Florentino Perez is keen to sign Alonso and will reportedly make a £23million bid for the player should he as expected be elected into the Bernabeu hotseat next month.

But Mascherano, who prospered in central midfield alongside Alonso this season, believes Liverpool should resist any overtures from Madrid.

“Hopefully the great players in Liverpool can stay and we can bring another player to improve the team,†said the Argentine.

“It’s important when you have the team in good form to keep the key players and Xabi is one of them.â€

Another player Argentina captain Mascherano wants at Anfield next season is Tevez, his international colleague and briefly West Ham United team-mate when they both arrived in the Premier League in August 2006.
