I like the premise of the thread but I disagree with the opening post a bit. I think he will end up being far better than a very good squad player.

Nice idea with the thread Sunny. I don't think he's good enough long term and that the time wasted trying to develop him probably could have been better spent on a different player altogether. That being said, I really do repect Lucas for never putting his head down and getting mopey.

How the fuck will Lucas become 'far, far better than a very good squad player?'

He's 23. He isn't going to have a growth spurt, or suddenly become fast. He isn't a great passer. He can't take players on. He never scores goals and is shit at shooting. He doesn't create anything.

He simply shuttles the ball across the pitch and 'works hard'

That's when he's playing at his best.

There is fuck all there to work with in terms of raw materials.

I said it when he joined and I'm still right

A mediocrity

I have a lot of sympathy for Lucas but I don't think we'll be a force to be reckoned with while he is in the team. He's not rubbish but we need better if we're to have our expectations realized.

I think Lucas gets more than enough love on RAWK.
[/quote]
rawk is unbelievable they rate lucas as high as essien, makelele and cambiasso .player of the season for 5 million the steal of the century .are these guys for real ??? compare him to papa boupa ,salif diao, djemba djemba not essien, makelele or cambiaso.

He doesn't beat players, he can't shoot, he passes sideways, he doesn't create. He can do all those things and more. Yet his role in the team isn't necessarily to do any of those things, but to allow others to do it.

Lucas works hard, he fills gaps and has dominated opposition midfields alongside Masher. It's obvious to me he has adapted his game to fit the requirements of the team and gives 100% every game he plays and importantly, and what has impressed me the most, he has bags of character.

I like the way he has strengthened his physique and although he can still sometimes get shrugged off the ball a little too easily at times, there are also other times when he's as powerful as Masher. The best is yet to come from Lucas and I think he'll be a mainstay of our central midfield for years, so get used to him.

Finaly, I thought he was very good in his first season and deservedly kept Xabi out for a short spell.

Deservedly kept him out for a short spell. Any idea why it was a short spell then?

And if Lucas is a mainstay of our midfield for 'many years' we will not be getting anywhere *near* a title, because no team has ever won one with a player as shit as him playing CM

Trufax

He does come in for too much abuse at times.

It's not his fault we signed him for 6M. It's not his fault we bombed out Xabi Alonso. It's not his fault he's small, slow and weak. It's not his fault he's playing week in, week out for a top European club. That all lies with another man. This kid is just living a dream at the moment, although he probably doesn't realise it yet.

A bit of credit for Lucas? He's got a thick skin, I'll give him that.

But even as a squaddie I still want better, and wouldn't think twice about selling him for £6M.

He's nowhere near as bad as your making him out to be. He's strengthened immeasurably compared to when he first arrived and even last year. At the start of the season he was better than Masher he holds his own in the centre of the park and works fucking hard. Even in injury time he's bursting to support the attack. I'm not saying he's world class, I think he's a better player than he's shown so far but up until last night, he's been better than our £20m midfielder. He's worth persisting with because maybe, he'll show the Brazilian player of the year form and then he'll be a bargain.

I agree all that foaming at the mouth abuse is way over the top, serves no purpose, is not about football and is just a waste of bandwidth.

This is Lucas' third season in the Premiership, he should look better than Aquilani at the moment. It's not a fair comparison.

I hope he somehow blossoms mate, I really do. But it would be a bigger shock than Istanbul.

Lucas won't suddenly become good. He'll only ever be average at best in the current team.

I do wonder though what another manager might do. Would they sell him instantly or try to get the best out of him? Or, depressingly, has Benitez already got the best out of him and this actually is his best??

Five above average games in going on 5 seasons and he's the new poster boy.

A living LFC legend like Gerrard drops ever so slightly below his incredible standards for a few months while injured and the crazies want to sell him.

Something aint right.

Shoulda gone to Specsavers.

You'd think so but there is just this small part of me that wonders if there is a better player in there somewhere. He must be good at something mustn't he?

It's hard to say. The reaction of that Brazilian guy quoted earlier in the thread suggests that Lucas might have more in his locker than we've seen at LFC, but he's not shown it for us. You can't fault his effort, but when he gets forward he INVARIABLY wastes any chances that come his way. His tackling can be quite good one minute, but powder-puff the next. His passing at its best is neat and tidy, but even then rarely leads to anything much.

I have some sympathy for the guy, as it isn't his fault he's been overpromoted and asked to play a far more important role than he's equipped for. He could play an adequate supporting role in a successful squad. Based on what we've seen from him, though, IMO asking him to play a central role in a team struggling for form was never, ever going to work.

There are three things that cause me the most frustration when it comes to Lucas. If he could improve in these areas, he'd go a long way to winning over the fans in my opinion.

1. He still gets easily shrugged off the ball. I know he's bulked up and is stronger but this still happens too often.

2. A lot of what he does is too hesitant, too slow. He needs to speed things up in the middle of the park, look for one twos, carry the ball forward and just generally be more positive in possession.

3. Attack with greater authority. I've noticed numerous times, for example, where he's been supporting attackers on the wing and he'll just stop and look for a way to get rid of the ball so that he doesn't have to take on the attacking onus himself. Again, he really has to be more positive in those kind of situations and just go for it.

He doesn't do it because he can't

End of story

We need better. Much better. Get rid.

We should have bought Diarra or Cana and jibbed Lucarse off

Whilst I actually like Lucas and feel he will improve, I'm gonna agree with you. This season we needed a bit more guile from our squad players, which Lucas seems to have lost when coming across the water

We fucking love ruining prospects

However since he is here. Lucas for first goal against wolves!!
