Lucas Leiva.
He's never going to be a brilliant player for Liverpool. Nor do I think he's good enough for Liverpool as a first team player. He's never going to be a player who tries anything clever or different or give you a sudden match winning moment a la Luis Garcia.
I'm going to give him some credit here though. Something he does possess is guts, broad shoulders and he's never gone hiding. He's improved. Like I say, he'll never be great, but he's improving.
For the majority of the first two seasons he was fucking woeful. Clueless. Couldn't pass, couldn't tackle. Made silly mistakes that cost us games. Rightly so, the fans gave him lots of stick for it and justifiably so. He had a shit game last night but, you know what, it was a rarity this season. He's performed well, adequately if you will. He's not made any major mistakes and he's performed well whilst all of those around him haven't. He's not set the world on fire but he's done a job.
People have been slagging him off because that's his label now. "Lucas is shit therefore he must be". Can we not see beyond that. All I'm saying is if he can improve in the face of the huge amount of criticism and stick he's received could he improve even more if we backed him a little more instead of slagging him off before every game before a ball is even kicked.
He's never going to be the asnwer in our midfield. Not by a long shot - but he could improve to be a very good squad player. And he is still only 23.
Cue Brendan exploding.
