these are classic threads which usually revolve around pele and diego, but you can also bet your bottom dollar that someone will mention Best and usually do so by comparing him to diego (0ften by disparaging diego to be rather more one dimensional than he was - his performance in 1990, with half the pace and in a deep lying position to take a medicore team to the final puts this argument to rest).

for me diego is the greatest:
- record with argentina, wins world cup by himself;
- record with napoli, changes mediocre team into power houses of italian and european football (uefa cup)
- played an ara where defensive football was at its pinncable after the demise of the brazillian 82 team, notwithstanding this, he was still an unbelievable attacking force;
- he played football at club level against the best in the world on a weekly basis and still stood out;
- he could, lead, tack free kicks, dribble, pass, corners, and pass like no others.

Did you ever watch Best playing, Red? I mean actually playing a match rather than just a couple of clips on occasion cause that last line is just wrong. I thought Maradonna was an exceptional player - I hated him and was in awe of him at separate times in the WC against England. His performances were remarkable and consistent with Napoli - and we were able to view this because of the explosion in TV viewing in the years before his emergence.

I don't think I've ever tried to denigrate him but the reason he gets compared to Best is because his best attributes were largely those of Best. If you had watched him in games you would see that Diego was certainly not the best dribbler or passer to be seen on the football stage.

If Best had played a decade or so later then the question would be whether this player or that will ever challenge him as the greatest ever. As it is I don't need statistics such as the theory he took an average club side to greatness or that he took a national side (which was very good without him) to the final of the WC twice with one win. What I go on is the performance on the field and if you watched Best playing you'd have no need of statistics either.

Wiz, no I never saw him play, and i wasn't directing my post at anyone in particular. granted Best was a great player, but his supporters usually highlight his lack of tv exposure in the modern era as a means to argue that he was not rated as high as he should be. however, this doesn't seem to have caused pele any problems, and best played in europe with more exposure. ultimately its always difficult to compare players from each generation as others have noted, what we can do is compare how players rated with their peers and in turn compare this level of domination. For me this is where Diego excels.
That could only provide a reliable comparison if you assume that all other players, except for the genius individuals we're comparing, are always of the same standard, which clearly isn't the case. Wiz is right - you have to look at the individual player alone if such comparisons are going to mean anything at all. On that basis Best has to win, because he had the widest range of top-level abillities.
on an individual basis diego is unsurpassable, in all respects, ability, application of ability and impact of ability.

One of my favourite anecdotes about George Best was that a live satellite feed had been set up to bring together Pele, Best and Cruyff, when such things were extraordinary. Anyway, they ask the obvious question- you 3 are reputed to be three of the greatest players ever to play- who do you think is the best? Cruyff responds first, and comes to the decision that it is Pele. The brazilian is up next, and he declares George the finest player ever. George mulls it over and says, "well if Pele thinks I'm the greatest, I suppose it *must* be me!"

Bestie came out with some tremendous stuff at times. Another favourite of mine (which I've used in a press release on Xpert League BTW 8)) was about spending loads on booze and women - "the rest, I squandered". Then there's the story he told about a guy from room service bringing some food to his hotel room one night, when the current Miss World was in bed there. Best recounted with great relish how the guy looked into the room, then back at Best himself, and said: "George, where did it all go wrong?" ;D

I'll tell you what about George Best, he didn't say thank you when you held a train station waiting room door open for him !

No.1, my eye !

Aye, I know the one. He'd won in the Casino (unusually for George) and there was £50,000 and a Miss World on the bed. The wee porter happens to be from Belfast and then asks that infamous question.

Think he also mentioned gambling alongside booze and women Jules.

Would have loved to have seen the fucker in the flesh; even on TV I couldnt believe how he ghosted past players.

The only story I remember was Brian Reade and some mates pissing in his flowerpot.

Voted for Maradona.

1.Maradona still the best
2. Messi
3. Fat Ronaldo

Pele - never saw him.

You see this is the whole problem with threads like this, with the greatest of respect people are just not qualified to comment, well they are but only in their own experience, which, for the majority is pretty limited by years. Even myself as regards the likes of Puskas
So you have what we have here, the majority wrongly influencing the result, not intentionally I hasten to add.

Beckenbauer should also have been in the options by the way mien Herr

There is also a debate now arising which seems to be about not the greatest, but the most influential, but I suppose that is the nature of debate. I also think that the likes of Messi are premature yet, looking back he could well be, but at the moment he is certainly the best player in the world, but then a few years ago Ronaldo was.

It is very simple - as far as people of a certain age should be concerned, and I think this would be backed up by most polls of this type.

1) Pele,
2) Maradona
3) Kruyf

(with the greatest of respect to Puskas 😉 )

regards

I was wondering about Pele... had people never heard of him until '58 or whenever it was? And did people only see him at World Cups every 4 years?

He was still a teenager in 1958, so I doubt much will have been known about him outside Brazil beforehand - communications weren't nearly as easy or instantaneous as they are now. Even after that we mostly made do with film clips (except in World Cup years as you say), but Santos occasionally travelled to this country or Europe to play friendlies, which is when I got to see him.

To be fair Vlad, I have great respect for Pelé. I've seen tons of videos of him playing but they're often highlights so I can't really judge him like the others.
I trust my father when he says that it's between Pelé and Maradona despite him seeing Messi and Zidane as well, but for me it's impossible to list Pelé. I'm better off just giving him an honourable mention.

I work with a Brazilian who claims Garrincha was even better than Pele, that's a bit strong but I think at the very least a lot of Brazilians would expect to see him on a list of the top 10 in the world ever.

Garrincha

This is an unusual youtube clip because it features the player's funeral, but if you know his story you'll know why!
