Voted for Maradona.

1. Maradona went to Napoli, the Serie A equivalent of Newcastle and won them the league twice and the uefa cup and a domestic cup.
2. He won Argentina the world cup and also captained them to the final in 1990.
3. Take Messi out of the Barca system and he goes from worlds greatest to average. You want proof see Argentina.

Doesn't matter though:

1.Maradona still the best
2. Messi
3. Fat Ronaldo

Pele - never saw him.
In the space of a few sentences you say Messi is both:

a) average
b) the second best player in the world. Ever.

At least Neil waits for a few months before contradicting himself.
Lol.

What? Zidane in my top 5?!

THIS IS ZIDANESS!

My top 5 is comprised of:

Ronaldo
Maradonna
Pele
Matthews
Best

i look at it along the lines of being strapped to a chair ready to be executed if the team i chose loses. so with my life depending on it who is the one player in all of history i'd want on that team? that would be george best

The greatest must prove it on the pitch and in the dugout. How many of those starred for the best team in two separate leagues, winning titles at both, then went on to manage one of them to titles & doubles, lead his club through one of the worst crises in football showing humanity & huimility, then went on to win the league with another club, then came out of retirement to lead the greatest club in the world back to the top?

There is only one!

The rest of the folks on that list were great players, but went on to become coke heads or drunks or burger eating goofies or apologists for the half-men who cant get it up anymore...

..excedpt Bale of course

I'd have to say Messi tbh. When you think of how football has developed and the physical and technical attributes of the modern footballer has progressed. To do what he's doing now is beyond what anyone has done.

52 goals in april. Fucking hell.

I was born in the 80s and thus wasn't able to watch half of the names on the list so I'm going for Zidane

X3. Except I was born in the 90's.

Di Stefano?

Eusebio?

Not in the list but Dalglish is?

Strange.

Maradonna then Ronaldo for me. Wish I had seen Pele live a few times.

Jesus, why bother DB?

Seriously, you're on a Liverpool website. Is it really that strange that Liverpool's greatest player is in the selection and some other players that nobody thinks is the greatest ever aren't?

Yeah but what I meant is that he's the world best player at Barca. He's so adapted to the system that he doesn't quite work the same way when he plays for Argentina.
We'll never see him Newcastle which is quite sad.

I went for Maradona for footage seen and what he achieved with Argentina and Napoli.

If it was based on players i'd seen play live, it'd be Zidane, he was fucking incredible. HC, you're crackers.

As I said in t'other thread, if Messi does what he does for Barca, on the international stage, there's no reason why he won't go on to be the greatest footballer of all time.

On George Best, people say he was the 'Gerrard' of his generation but 100x better, the player who could do it ALL. I've never seen Best play, but from what i've heard from people of the time, he would be well up there but cause I haven't seen him play, I couldn't give him a vote.

Being continually different, controversial, obstinate, and the yin to everyone else's yang is difficult enough when you're smart. When you're thick as fucking pigshit like DB, it just looks utterly ridiculous.

Zidane vs Messi is an interesting one. Both scored in the European Cup final. Yet Zidane won France a World Cup. I'm not really arsed about international football, but he did the business when it mattered. I guess Messi still has time. That said, judging by how Barca allegedly helped Messi "grow" or whatever, if true, I can't see him lasting for too many more years.

I don't know who the greatest player is because of only seen the odd piece of footage of players before the 90s. I would have said the greatest player of my lifetime is Zidane (Hardcastle you're Kerrrazy), but now, I think Messi might be even better. I don't really care about this international football shout. It's not like he's not destroying world class defences by himself in club football, is it?

Messi needs a semi-competent manager and a balanced side to do well on the international stage. There is only so much one player can do. Mardaonna would have also struggled in the awful setup they've had in recent years.

I think it's very difficult to compare players from different eras. I look at clips from the 60's, 70's and even 80's and the football is like a joke. With the amount of time and space players were afforded back then, the Messi of today would score a 100 a season, nevermind 50 odd.

Funny how it was brought in like the 2nd post earlier and nobody said a word.

Considering Pelle and Eusebio both rate Di Stefano as the greatest ever surely he deserves a spot in there.

and DB, Kenny was pretty good you know.

And Maradona's so good you can't spell his name 😉
Ha ha. Never questioned it. But it could be argued Gerrard is our greatest ever player.

In any case I don't think Kenny is in the top 25 of all time nevermind the top 10 from what I've seen.

If Messi continues like he has for the last 3 years for another 5 he will go down as the greatest ever.

But for now it's Diego.

Pele.
I'm sorely tempted to pick Pele cause I think he was unbelievable. The thing that's missing is, as LTW says, his club performances. If he'd gone to Italy, Spain or England then that question mark wouldn't hang over him. I still think he makes number 2 - the quality he showed in the greatest team in the world against everyone else can't be fluked.

George Best, however, still holds number one. He did everything that Maradonna was famous for doing but he could tackle and run as well as anyone else in that era as well. Nothing he couldn't do and he copped some treatment from the dirtiest opponents going around but either stayed on his feet or just got up again. Everything Maradonna did Best was just as good but he had some other elements to his game that Diego never had. I don't think there is much between the top 3 but Maradonna was fortunate to have played at a time when every game was truly being seen by a global audience for the first time. He made a world wide first impression which neither Best nor Pele were able to do and this is why so many people have him at number one instead of number 3.

As has already been said, Kenny and Ronaldinho (nor Giggs) don't really belong in the list......... Bale - words fail me but I know it was just Oncy having a laugh.

I'd love to see Messi come to England and we could measure him properly. Brazil's Ronaldo would probably be up there near those top 3 if he hadn't come off the rails at such a young age - he was truly frightening. The current Ronaldo has proved himself elite in both Spain and England and, if Messi wants to be one of the greats then I think he needs to do the same thing. He disappears with Argentina where Ronaldo does not for Portugal.

Zidane is a funny one; he was mesmerising for a couple of seasons at Real and the difference he made to the French team when they were defending the World Cup (injured hamstring and all) was unbelievable. But I don't think he really can cut it with Best, Pele or Maradonna.

I will add that if Stevie can perform next season he'll have a a league title and a CL win in the next two years to support his own claims for being one of the games elite. Unfortunately I also believe Rooney is going to make his own mark in the next couple of years too.

PS. If Giggs had developed a right foot early in his career he'd be talked about as one of the games best ever.

1. Maradona
2. Best
3. Ronaldo
4. Messi
5. Pele

For the record Marco Van Basten (who is not on the list) would be in my top 10 and definitely ahead of Cruyff (who is on the list).
