The future of English football

A year or two back I recall having a few conversations about the England team and the failure of it's "golden generation" and wondering where the next batch of players are going to come from. Looking through the teams in our league and there were very few bright young English talents to pick out - Young would still be around, Walcott, Rooney... I struggled to build a first team let alone a squad.

Now it seems there has been a wave of young players coming good - or at the very least getting big moves to big clubs: Wilshere, Henderson, Kelly, Carroll, Cleverly, Welbeck, Jones, Smalling, Walker, Richards etc.

I'm not sure I see as many world class players in this group as the one we've had for the last 10 years, but could England finally get a decent team out of this lot?
 
providing england has a good manager then theres no reason this next generation couldn't consistently be competing in the later stages of tournaments
 
England have always had players with the ability but never the mentality.

When England find a Manager who can get them to perform and not wilt under pressure and criticism then they'll be competitive.
 
I'm sure this is not what you really wanted to discuss here....but couldn't resist.

I don't think Smalling is a good player at all.

Henderson is also not going to send shivers down the spine of opposing teams. Wilshere and Cleverly seem to be the only players in that list who seem to have the required technical ability to do well in international stage.

Carroll and Welbeck are decent second strikers to have with Rooney, but if Rooney does not rediscover his form soon, then England may need another world class forward in the Rooney class to emerge pretty soon.

The likes of Downing/Young etc will never be able to trouble top class teams like Spain and Germany in Europe. Having had a look at some of the prodigies these two countries have been producing recently, the word "underwhelmed" repeatedly comes to my mind when i look at corresponding up-starts from England. I hope Sterling is able to make a bigger impact.

Richards/Kelly...they can do a good job in a world-class team. But they won't be the main part of a world-class team.

Jones.....has good ability and is a strong player, but what is going to be his position? He is on the wrong side of 6' feet mark to make an impact as a CB. Eventhough he is a strong lad, we haven't really seen too many successful CBs who were short with the glaring exception of Canavaro. As a DM, i'm not sure he will develop tactically to play well in that role.

We can start with the CB height thing. Phil Jones is 5'11 according to Wikipedia.

Here are some more well thought of CBs at 6' and under:

Carvalho 5'11.5
Ayala 5'9.5
Puyol 5'10
Thiago 6'
Carragher 5'11
Baresi 5'9
Vermaelen 5'11
Jagielka 6'
Samuel 6'
Demichelis 6'
Cordoba 5'8

What say you?
 
If thats the best England have to offer, then their fans will be looking back fondly at the days when Lampard and Co used to make it out of the group stages.
 
The kind of footballers that England will have in the future could prove to be a blessing in disguise if the right coach is hired. Rather than trying to shoehorn players into the squad, the right coach can cultivate a strong collective team spirit rather than relying on a few superstars, c.f. Denmark in 92 and Greece in 08.
 
Wellbeck impressed me last Season no end and I've been all 'please let him not turn out as good as I believe he very well could be at United'.

And now look at him.

Dammit.

On topic. England's got a very potent crop of young players coming through the ranks. You'll be just fine.
 
I think the lack of a so called 'superstar' generation emerging will definately be a massive plus for England as the national team starting with Beckham era descended into a farce of vain self promotion where the football seemed to be secondary to the book deals endorsment contracts and the WAGs (hate that term)

Its pretty clear that the next crop dont have the same stand out players but I think that may dampen expectations and help build a better team, I dont see England winning a world cup in the next 10 years when you consider the output from Spain and Germany to mention just 2 but so what they havent won it nearly 50 so its not like that represents a massive drop off in returns. I think the generally public would be much happier to get behind a team of honest players who play for the shirt and go to tournaments without trying to engrave their name on the trophy before a ball has been kicked than have to endure another decade of the sort of loathsome shit thats been served up by Ashley Rio and brave JT
 
It'll be more of the same KHL, loads of hype in the run up to a tournament, 11 players will take to the field and not even remotely play like a team because nobody is willing to sacrifice themselves to do the less glamourous side of the game, they get knocked out in the quarters, everyone blames some refereeing decision/ individual error/ act of god while ignoring the real problems. Repeat ad infinitum.
 
McEachran and Wilshere are players of a different style from what England have produced in the past decade or so. See how they develop over the next few years.
 
England have struggled because they've only ever had 11 decent players at once, sometimes even less, and they've never been able to play together. A manager with any kind of balls would have made the necessary sacrifices for the sake of the team, but so far they've been unwilling to do so.

We may well see a few of those incorporated into the squad, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

U17 European Championship - Within the last 5 years, they got to the final in 2007 (Welbeck, Rose, Moses, Lansbury), won it in 2010 (Coady, Wisdom, Wickham, Barkley, McEachran, Garbutt, Robert Hall, Luke Williams) and got to the semi-finals this year (Sterling, Chalobah, Nick Powell, Hallum Hope), knocked out by eventual winners, the Netherlands. Prior to these 5 years they haven't made a final appearance since the tournament at this age level was set up in 1982.

U19 European Championship - This age level has consisted of a final appearance in 2009 (Welbeck, Kyle Walker, Delfouneso, Lansbury, Briggs) and a semi-final appearance in 2010 (Clyne, Matthew James, Delfouneso, Caulker, Mellis, Briggs, Bostock), within the last 5 years. Before then stretching back 30 years England had one win in 1993 and a final appearance in 2005.

U21 European Championship - The last time England won this championship was when they collected back-to back titles in 1984 and 1986 but as recently as 2009 reached the final getting beat by an Ozil-inspired Germany. (Hart, Micah Richards, Adam Johnson, Walcott, Noble, Milner, Muamba, Cattermole, Rodwell).

If I was an England fan, i'd eagerly anticipate how this generation develop, hopefully without being burdened by media expectation and the intrusion of their private lives and manage to keep out of trouble unlike Terry, Ashley Cole, Rooney, Beckham, Ferdinand, Gerrard, Crouch, Woodgate and Bowyer, rather than looking at the past misfortunes or missed opportunities of the 'Golden Generation'.

If the likes of McEachern, Barkley and Sturridge progess like people are hoping they could have a tidy side. That midfield would knock the ball about well if nothing else. Couldn't think of a younger striker to replace Rooney with!

Yep England will be shite for generations to come but fans may take some solace in knowing Ireland will be always be even shitter. Cue whining about population size whilst blindly ignoring the fact The Netherlands exist
 
Is anyone really that arsed anyway. I dont mind England doing well if they do but Liverpool is all that really matters to me
