The Forum's Future...

I don't see why the site actually needs to spend any money on updates to be honest, it works fine as is. Just use any money donated to cover the normal costs.

Just my opinion...

If it ain't broke don't fix it. . I get that. .

But it's always nice to have a refresh once in a while...

We have had ideas some I've implemented which I think has improved the user experince overall.. The site functions and feature wise has improved over the last 12 months.

Portal is certainly one of them where looking at, however we are always open to suggestions..

Seconded. I like the forum as is. Don't waste money on cosmetics - keep the change for the future.

Whilst that's true, if you always leave things as is it stagnates.

Every time we've upgraded software the amount of new users posting has increased.

Without new users we die, cos people inevitably leave.

The front page appeals to me cos loads of users never touch any forums other than the footy forum, yet theres good content there, it highlights everything.

Fwiw we couldn't replicate the visual tiled look of avforums anyway, for many reasons, but having a page showing you news articles with images in alongside threads from here with lfc related backdrops & a section of things you missed whilst logged off (s bit like recent/unread in tapatalk) would be a very different beast imo.

Anyway, it's just an idea.

Yeah, if you have the time and money to put into it, work away and I'm sure everyone appreciates it.

But some of the best and most popular forums are also the most basic, it's actually the users that make a forum work well, the technology behind it is just the structure to allow them to. I just don't want to see a case where money is put into unnecessary things and the actual running costs fall behind.

That said, I'm more than willing to put in a few extra quid a year down the line if money does run out again. I'm just throwing the idea out there.

Good points. The front page (portal) add on is free with xenforo branding & $20 (US) branding free, the branding is usually small a the bottom of the page, so it shouldn't take away from any funds at all anyway.

If it were expensive & we thought added little we wouldn't bother even considering it (which is all we're doing so far) believe me!

As I recall, at the inaugural 6CM drinkies (I was never there for *that* photo), I spent quite a long time drunkenly trying to insist on making donations, which somebody (Jon) adamantly refused.

I'm glad you've finally seen sense

You may have noticed we had downtime last night.

This was not a technical issue, we quite literally didn't have any money in the meter!

Jono stepped in ,& put some cash in the hosting fund to get us up & running again, then Ross added a bit too.

However we cant personally fund this long term, all of our situations have changed & we don't have the kind of cash it requires to pay for it.

We have two options, adverts, or donations.

Now adverts are something I hate, & I know most of the admin staff hate the idea too. It's unlikely any revenue will come close to paying for the running costs, (most people use Adblock etc or never bother clicking on them) so we'd prefer to open it up for donations. I also swore never to put adverts on this site, I'd like not to go back on that.

That's up to you guys though, this thread is just to judge your views & see if there's interest in donations to site costs to keep us going.

Any idea how we may make regular donations, like?

I'd be interested in understanding some of your ideas around that.

Personally, I'm not interested in getting generic football news from here. I just had a look in the LFC news forum and it doesn't attract many views, which makes me think that neither is anyone else *. What I might be interested in however, is a more considered curation of articles, blog posts, videos etc.

* Which is why I think it's a mistake to add that news sidebar to the main football forum page. It just increases the noise on the page and the first time I saw it, I thought "how can I get rid of this"? I just want to focus on the forum and not be distracted by other stuff I'm not interested in.

Yeah I wasn't too gone on the sidebar either. I found it distracting.

Nothing gets past 6cm. If it's worth seeing or reading it will be posted by one of our fine posters. I don't ever go to the news forum either. I just presume the articles will end up in a thread or someone will reference it sooner or later.

Ok, I'll explain a bit, if we need to go in depth or debate at all, I'll split the thread into the feedback forum.

The news forum is rarely viewed, you're right. However the stories there are exactly what should create new threads, & that's what isnt happening enough on the forum currently.

Regards the portal/frontpage idea, I personally see it being (the other admin may disagree entirely) as a place where we could link podcasts (at least one poster here does an lfc one & there's TAW of course), videos (from 101greatgoals), streaming links (using an iframe so we're not hosting a link ourselves & cant get into trouble), the league table (again using an iframe so we dont have to pay that silly money when reproducing the table) & (if people step up to the plate) articles from posters.

Of course the bits which can enhance the forum are the whats new section, & some kind of system that displays recent/most popular threads from each forum.

Most of those arent solely text based & would look aesthetically pleasing as well as meaning the forum serves as an easy place to get a mutimedia experience that ties in with the club & forum, without requiring constant attention from us to stay fresh & updated.

People have created threads on the back of posting articles but they often die out as quickly as they were started. You get a few posts about it and then posters scurry back to the main threads on the players, match etc.

I think we exhaust so much in the various threads that it's hard to start new ones without being guilty of repeating ourselves.

To combat this, I would love to see articles, blog posts, etc by various members. We could be producing our own work and increasing our online presence at the same time. Rory is definitely on the right track with his work.

On a side note, who is the poster podcasting if you don't mind me asking?

We also miss @Herr Onceared. Come home Andy.

Honestly, I cant remember! It's one of the US posters, LTW listens to it I think.

Agree completely about the articles/blog posts approach. It works well for a lot of forums.

I have many ideas about what I think posters could write about, the one I really want is posters from all over the world explaining their match experiences to us. Where they watch it. Why they watch it there. What time the match is on, the culture around the match & the league as a whole in their country. Ever since someone explained how in (Malaysia?) the UTD match is screened in malls with hundreds of opposing fans watching on screens, & someone said they drove for two hours to get to the liverpool suppprters club to watch it at silly o clock in the morning these things have interested me, & I've seen nothing like it anywhere on the net.

A home page would be a nice thing to have, but nothing too cluttered.

Maybe a daily/weekly roundup of some of the top articles around the internet, plus a couple popular threads with some insight could be a welcome addition, but I would want to see analysis, not rehashing of news, out of any original content. I could see a tidy home page going a long way though.

The only other OC that I could see having a draw would be either LFC memories written by some of the posters here, or maybe some posts showcasing any interesting memorabilia a poster may have. You could have a weekly/monthly guest writer by a volunteer who's an active member here if that idea picks up.

One project a Padres website I follow does is shipping around an old Jersey, and members wear it to various locales, and typically write up a post with pictures of the local sights and whatnot, as well as adding a patch of whatever location they visited. The thing's been to probably 30 different cities in the US, plus around Belgium, London, Mexico, and so on.

Just a bunch of thoughts though, it really depends on what sort of direction you guys want to take it.

On an aside, has anyone looked at discourse.org?

Will be interesting to see how that progresses particularly if they can replicate the success of stackexchange.

I like a little refresh tbh. The SCM lads do a great job so I'm happy to let them decide whats best for the site. Probably keeps things a little more interesting for them as well. This might be a bit of an ask but I'd quite like a spell checker button embedded near the smilies and stuff above. You can of course tell me fuck off and stop being so lazy 😉

When will we be able to buy these shares? Can we get a guaranteed low price?

On a serious note, I'd like to contribute but at the moment I'm a bit strapped until divorce is finalised but I suppose every shekel counts. If I contribute more than Modo, I expect to be able to dismiss his rubbish as rubbish and demand he be removed though!

Tiny MCE will use your browsers spell check function by default... anything spelt wrong is usually underlined..

There is one built into the tiny mce. however it is disabled..
