The Donkey

He’s a streaky, confidence dependent finisher. Keep him (our points per game average is better with him in the side) and start the mad handsome fucker.

Those were two excellent, convincing finishes.

So, this is his moment again - it’s up to him to do what he’s spectacularly failed to do in the past - follow that up with another performance and goals that demands he plays.

Fucking delighted if it’s a 6 game hot scoring streak, just in time for Jota to get into scoring form for 6 games after that.

Then we can talk about selling and replacing in the summer.

The key point is that when the rest of the team has control of the game, we don’t need much from our number nine. When everything else is clicking, all we need is someone positioned correctly to put the ball in the back of the net, whether it’s a header or a simple tap-in. Jota demonstrated this perfectly in the last match.

It's been clear for ages that any intentions of moulding Nunez into "Torres 2.0" were misguided, but I've generally felt there’s more we can do to maximise his current strengths. His sole focus should be positioning himself within the width of the goalposts, concentrating entirely on being in the right place to finish off chances. The problem is he's so keen to make an impression he just bounds all over the pitch like a labradors first day at the beach. Hopefully today demonstrated to Nunez where he needs to be.

Slot should give him the next game.

This is precisely how we should use him when we have not scored - make him the pure focal point of all our attacks - crosses, passes - give him like 20 chances just aim everything towards Nunez and he will score eventually. You know we take the piss out of cheap owners - but really when you think about it - we had to use an 85M sub to get the job done.

I said this from before his arrival - I even broke down the percentage of his goals scored from within the 6 yd box + 7-8m (over 50% in Portugal) but we didn't play like that under Klopp so his goal poaching skills (fast instinctive reactions - not technical Suarez-like moves) went under-utilised.

Slot made a point in the post-match presser that Darwin is at his most useful in games or situations where we dominate the ball, not in fast or open transition games. So I think this is how he plans to use Nunez from now on.

It’s an interesting conundrum.

Slot clearly likes to play with a “false 9” that drops deep to help out the midfield and baits one of the opposition CBs to follow him and get out of position.

Seeing a few teams not take that bait - Forest were one.

Darwin. Was at his best last season on quick, direct football where his pace, movement and direct running meant we could utilise Trent to hit those long balls to get Darwin causing panic - that’s why his assists were so high (and Trent’s dropped off).

So, I don’t think Darwin is ever going to be “THE” number 9 in a Slot team - his game is not to come deep and set up play and his finishing is too erratic for us to warrant hanging our style to suit him.

But.. if anything, Slot is a pragmatist and he has no problem changing our playing style if a particular game needs it - that’s weee Darwin “could” be very important to us - as he’s an option.

Unfortunately, what it means is… we really did pay £65-85m for a new Divock Origi - just one that’s a little mentally unstable as opposed to Jedi-like calm.

So we signed Anakin to replace Obi-wan.

No wonder the youth players are all desperate for loans to the far side of the Galaxy, with Darth Darwin around!!!

There's one youth striker who can do both... but Slot doesn't see the force in him

I’m not having any of this. He came on, skied a couple, tapped one in and then scored a second well taken one. Priceless goals, but if we had a proper striker I doubt we would’ve needed them. But also turned to my woman and said “never doubted the lad”.

Yeah, but it’s about confidence - if those 2 goals get him to relax and just start doing what he does naturally without thinking too much or snatching at shots, we only need him to do that for half a dozen league games that result in wins and the league is on.

He didn’t do it last season when we needed it, hopefully this season he can.

So maddening that he does exactly the right thing for the second goal, takes an extra touch, makes the space, but he had to have scored within two minutes to get that kind of confidence.

Hopefully, though I’m far from convinced it’ll be the case, he doesn’t have the memory of a goldfish and remembers that bit about taking a touch and creating the space before lashing it home beneath and between the white stick things.

How many times have we been through this with him though. Feels like the bird I know I don’t wanna marry. The lows are low, but fuck me, the highs are high. It isn’t working. We need something stable.
