The actual footy is back on! (v Arsenal)

Well the real thing starts in a couple of weeks time...
This for me was a warm up

It might be a "warm up", but it was the same as the friendly earlier in the week, and the last lot of games at the end of last season. Uninspired, lacking a creative edge and defensively suspect.

If you're satisfied with that going into the season then bully for you.

Personally I'm getting tired of the same old lame stuff from fans. At the end of the season it was "who gives a fuck, we're only playing like this because we've won it". Then in the friendly it was "it's only a friendly, we'll beat Arsenal", now it's "this was a warm up".

Looking forward to the reaction after a few dodgy results when we get "I'm not arsed, we won it last season anyway".

We need players and we need to start performing better. No one should be satisfied or nonplussed about that shite.

We were awful for the first 30 mins, better towards the break and played well the last 30-35 mins bar the closing stages. In other words we improved as the game went on.
We’ll be ready against Leeds.

I hope we sign Thiago and Sarr. Would give us the options we need for the new season.

That is the absolute minimum we should sign.

Ideally we buy another CB too, especially if Matip is perma-injured.

At least it will enable Gomez to deputise at RB. That or buy a new RB.

I really don't like Fabinho at CB. Against good sides, he'll be exposed there. We saw in the last couple of minutes today how bad his positioning was from crosses.

Thiago would help us out immensely. It doesn’t seem like we have someone who can help move the ball quickly. Today was evidence why Wijnaldum will be sacrificed for him.

The energy Alexander-Arnold gives us is massive to the way we play. He was sorely missed. That also impacted how Salah played.

As much as I want to say, "who cares about the Charity shield" or whatever it's called now, it actually bothers me that we lost.

Fabs switched positions mid game. Cut him some slack.

Doesn't bother me. If anything, a good omen considering how last season started.
Yeah I don't believe in all that hocus pocus.
Last season we played City. That was fucking Arsenal with Luiz marshalling their defence. It wasn't even their best team.

Yeah, I'm not ready to start ringing any alarm bells yet, but I think the team needs a spark.

Looks like you are.

Not really, seeing as we played really well against City in the second half of last year's Community Shield.

We were poor today. Anyone who expressed concern from the period that led up to the Watford defeat to the end of last season got shouted down and ordered to rejoice, but the evidence has been there for all of that time. It's as if someone just let the air out the tyres. The defence looks slow and ponderous, the midfield lacks intensity as well as imagination, and I can't remember the last time the front three looked so ineffective. Mane still has a spark, and Keita improves the midfield (when he isn't doing a Momo tribute act and repeatedly winning the ball and then losing it and then winning it again). I said it before, it'll be criminal if after all the hard work that it took for us to win the title we now fail to strengthen the squad. The first XI look like people who've climbed Everest and have just collapsed once they've reached the summit. The crap PR from the club is all about how 'This is just the beginning,' but the reality is it's more like the end unless the owners wake up, see how Chelski and City and even the Mancs are competing, and realise that we need to push on, pronto.

It's a bit annoying that we're not building on our success.

We won the Champions League and brought in Van den Berg. We win the League and bring in a back up left back.

I understand the financial restraints, but this team will eventually run out of gas. We should be strengthening from a position of power, not waiting for everyone else to catch up to us and then going out and panic buying.

Poor Donavan. He goes full-out negative v Salzburg and gets abuse. Tries to be more positive today and still criticised! For a long time my attitude has been that I'd love to see us win it just one more time, then I'd take a step back. I don't like so many aspects of modern football - huge salaries, players going down like they've been shot, billionaire owners, the tension I feel before games. I'm ready to walk away happily into the sunset with great parting memories of a manager and team which stood out from the rest. The fact that I'm getting pissed off by pre-season performances is a concern to me.

We didn't look any better when I saw us draw 2:2 with Sporting at a similar stage of last year's pre-season (both were 3rd pre-season games if I'm not mistaken). There is really no reason to panic, ring alarm bells or do any of that shit. And if the majority of the squad is indeed out of gas we won't know it until deep into the season. Judging this on a pre-season game is... just stupid, sorry.

I agree about the long-term building. But that's a completely separate issue from looking a bit tepid in a pre-season game, which happens EVERY season and has absolutely no bearing on whether the season will be good or not.

This is what scares me ... and yes, I'm slightly worried but also, I'm trying to balance that out knowing how the team is ... time will tell I guess but I hope your valid negative concerns aren't justified .... hope ...

I agree (and have done for a while) with Macca and Mark.

This team looks like it's been running out of gas and ideas for a while. That and teams are becoming more effective at shutting us out.

I'm good with bringing through youngsters but at the level we hope to be competing at they need to be almost Owen / Gerrard type talents if we're going to be throwing them in at the deep end and actually relying on them to perform from the off over the course of a season.

Neco, for example, looks like he's got talent but is he really ready to go up against the likes of Auba relatively unaided?

The way we've managed the last few transfer windows is truly baffling.

Last 30 minutes was much improved.
Still need a player or two to improve us, and also to make sure the transition won't be too hard in the longer term.
