The actual footy is back on! (v Arsenal)

I think we need a new midfielder, in addition to a forward to push the front three.
Gini looked old today. Slow and ponderous on the ball.

We didn't look any better when I saw us draw 2:2 with Sporting at a similar stage of last year's pre-season (both were 3rd pre-season games if I'm not mistaken). There is really no reason to panic, ring alarm bells or do any of that shit. And if the majority of the squad is indeed out of gas we won't know it until deep into the season. Judging this on a pre-season game is... just stupid, sorry.

I agree about the long-term building. But that's a completely separate issue from looking a bit tepid in a pre-season game, which happens EVERY season and has absolutely no bearing on whether the season will be good or not.

Panglossian smugness is really no position from which to brand others as stupid.

Keita has to start from now on. He gives us a different option in midfield, although Milner arguably was our best player in the first half.
I'm afraid that teams have started to figure us out.
We played into Arsenal hands today, it seems. .I'm far from being an expert but Arteta basically set his team up to defend the wings and let our midfield do whatever they want cause they aren't a threat.
We need other outlets. I'm really disappointed with Firmino's performance, but maybe it isn't his fault because we focus so much on the wings that the only thing he could do was wait in the box for crosses, surrounded by Holding, Luiz and Tierney.
So we need an outlet in midfield. Is Thiago the answer? Not sure, but maybe Keita is.

I agree (and have done for a while) with Macca and Mark.

This team looks like it's been running out of gas and ideas for a while. That and teams are becoming more effective at shutting us out.

I'm good with bringing through youngsters but at the level we hope to be competing at they need to be almost Owen / Gerrard type talents if we're going to be throwing them in at the deep end and actually relying on them to perform from the off over the course of a season.

Neco, for example, looks like he's got talent but is he really ready to go up against the likes of Auba relatively unaided?

The way we've managed the last few transfer windows is truly baffling.

On the positive side, the coaching staff seem to have noted that we need to adapt tactically. They know that other teams have worked out systems and strategies to block the full backs and go deep and frustrate the midfield, and apparently Pep has been working on various tweaks to deal with this. Good. But I suspect even they would agree that we also need some new players as well. Klopp is a remarkable character, and one of the remarkable things is his ability to get the big picture and understand how the whole club functions - it's probably true that he could be a great CEO in all kinds of companies - so he instinctively knows not to just whine when he can't get what, as manager, he wants in certain financial situations. But I do think this is the kind of time when he needs to, not so much go 'Full Rafa,' but at least discreetly let FSG know that we REALLY can't just expect him to keep wringing every last drop from the current squad. His own reputation is on the line as well as the club's - it's just not acceptable to pretend that there haven't been signs, pre and post lockdown, that the team has been struggling to reach its own high standards. It's no knee-jerk complaint, and a 'wait and see' approach won't stop the damage from being done.

Yeah... and one of the positives to take away from today is that Minamino looked decent in his little cameo playing between the lines. I guess we'll see be seeing more of that.

If we're not going to buy anyone of note - which sadly looks to be the case - then Minamino proving to be a top class player will be a huge bonus. That and Shaq actually being fit and available though that may be a stretch.

Even then, we're looking pretty thin at the back.

I know you can read, Macca, and you know the difference between a word directed at a person or a specific argument. Smart people can make stupid arguments – if not, the entire SCM would have been like 3 pages long.

Minamino has always looked decent on the cameos he's been provided, but today it looks like he has that extra bit of confidence to make a difference for the team. He's always seemed a bit shy and maybe even self critical to the point that he might've felt that last season's achievement was regardless of him being in the team. Getting the important equaliser and scoring his penalty should only make him better for us.

They both did well, although Naby did have that inexplicable mental fuck-up when he lost the ball twice in our half within 10 seconds. Big step for Taki for finally get off the mark; sweet finish too.

How many times in the last couple dozen games has klopp said something about needing to be more positive, or find solutions, or find freshness in the final third. We do need freshness in the final third. We will find it in the transfer market, we've looked everywhere else.

I completely forgot about this game today, but not surprised by the result, I know it is silly - but this game means fuck all to me but that said, we do need more fresh blood to make us play a bit different. Seems like we had a load of possession but failed to take advantage or make it count. Think we definitely need fresh blood in this squad - someone that will make winning easier for us rather than last seasons constant need for will-power and exhausting the opposition before we finally win. I just hope we don't start this season thinking it will be like last season - coz it won't - most of our rivals improved after the lock-down Arsenal included.

Obviously he's better integrated into the squad now, but I also think starting a new season afresh has helped him mentality. It's hard to feel like you belong in a group that's already romped the league before you arrived, combine that with not speaking the language and being naturally shy and it's difficult, regardless of how warm and welcoming a group can be.

His attitude has always been brilliant, though. He clearly cares a great deal. There's the makings of a Hendo like transformation over the next few years, IMO.

It might be a "warm up", but it was the same as the friendly earlier in the week, and the last lot of games at the end of last season. Uninspired, lacking a creative edge and defensively suspect.

If you're satisfied with that going into the season then bully for you.

Personally I'm getting tired of the same old lame stuff from fans. At the end of the season it was "who gives a fuck, we're only playing like this because we've won it". Then in the friendly it was "it's only a friendly, we'll beat Arsenal", now it's "this was a warm up".

Looking forward to the reaction after a few dodgy results when we get "I'm not arsed, we won it last season anyway".

We need players and we need to start performing better. No one should be satisfied or nonplussed about that shite.

I am just see the CS as a one off nothing cup Game, were as the "Pre-season friendlies" are more about getting ready, and trying new tactics so for ME, losing a Friendly especially against so call lesser opposition is more disturbing t6han losing the CS to another permier league team who want to win the thing becuase they also value it...

Personally I don't, but I understand were you are coming from

As much as I want to say, "who cares about the Charity shield" or whatever it's called now, it actually bothers me that we lost.
On this occassion It did not bother me... But what did, was the lack of creativity fromk midfield...

Milner should not have started

Nico Williams constantly gave acres of space to Aubameyang, and did not offer the quailty of TAA going forward, nor in defence

No real alternative back up striker... Brewster not given any real time to show what he could do

Need a quality Striker,CB,RB and LB

We need a left back? Are you having a laugh?

Seems like most of our games since February,, loads of posession but struggle to score while our opponents magically score from pretty much every shot on target. We will find out for certain in 2 weeks but this team looks very flat, and has done for several months now despite the breaks.

Poor Donavan. He goes full-out negative v Salzburg and gets abuse. Tries to be more positive today and still criticised! For a long time my attitude has been that I'd love to see us win it just one more time, then I'd take a step back. I don't like so many aspects of modern football - huge salaries, players going down like they've been shot, billionaire owners, the tension I feel before games. I'm ready to walk away happily into the sunset with great parting memories of a manager and team which stood out from the rest. The fact that I'm getting pissed off by pre-season performances is a concern to me.

Don't feel sorry for me...

Salzburg was for me a lack of real effort and intensity thats what pissed me off

Today it was effort, and intensity, but lacking in creativity and guile, and that for the most part was due to the fact we had no TAA and playing James Milner...

I can take abuse or being criticised or people tring to bully me... Water off a ducks back

Just don't think the CS matters

Modo... What if Robbo gets injuried?

As the Idea of "back up" players (guilty of using the term myself) Any player we buy of an position should be one that can challenge for that position and push players in those position to perform better...

We just bought a left back, did you miss it?

On the old Covid point: our new LB was spitting like a trooper on the (spaced) bench today. Why he felt the need to repeatedly expel great globs of phlegm when he was sitting down just watching is a mystery. And the whole hygiene guidance info doesn't seem to be seeping in as far as any sport is concerned - same in cricket as in footie, the players seem to think that so long as they start with an elbow or fist pump they're then able to shake hands, pat faces, hug, rub necks, etc etc. What's the point? If they're not going to bother, then don't go through that ritual at all!

What a strange thing to look forward to.

I know we won the league and all - but do some of you guys think that some of our players look at City and think that they have it so easy in terms of effort and goals ? - we have to work so damn hard to get a goal and once we are in front then things usually become easy (well most of the time), but before that first goal it has often felt like a massive struggle, and always I have looked at the lack of midfield creativity that is the root cause of this.
