So, it is that time again where we can get these threads going. Woop!

In a bit of boring fashion though, I think we will start with the team that started vs Dortmund. They Defence all got a long stint, no doubt to get time to gel together. Good for Magic to know he down the pecking order, might again be a kick up the arse he needs.

------------------Mignolet------------------
Manquillo---Skrtel---Lovren---Johnson
-------------------Gerrard------------------
-----------Henderson--Emre Can---------
Sterling---------------------------Coutinho
-------------------Sturridge-----------------

Thoughts?

I think the closest players to taking a spot would be either Allen in the place of Can but can't see any others at present.

Looks good. One striker will be the way this season

I'm missing it as I have a 40th birthday golf weekend. Gutter.

Putting Coutinho wide is possible, but takes away a lot of his influence. Which is probably why Rodgers went 4-2-3-1 yesterday.

Also, may get disagreed with here, but I'd go Allen instead of Can. I'd rather Allen's experience in the early weeks. Can can (!!) be eased in as the season progresses.

Yep - I think I would personally like to see Allen, especially for his pressing which was a strong feature of Saints last year and hard to know whether they will still follow this approach.

Whilst I have shown Coutinho wide, we all know him and Raheem exchange places a lot and rotate positions on the pitch.

I suppose you could make a case for Markovic starting and Henderson dropping deeper, but it looks unlikely he'll be fit.

Such a pity about the Markovic and Lallana injuries. It's actually left us fairly short of attacking options early on in the season.

Don't think Henderson is cut out for a deeper role. As someone said on Twitter during the world cup, its like taking a super lively young dog to the beach and keeping it on a short lead.

EDITED : Lallana is not supposed to be fit until 13th September so reference to him being on the bench this weekend removed.

Markovic & Flanno should be fit for next weekend and Moreno should have joined us by then too, I'd expect the first two to make the bench.

The team worked so well against Dortmund (and Southampton played a similar pressing game last season as Dortmund usually do, they may not under Koeman) that I think Rodgers will shelve his preferred 4-3-3 and go with 4-2-3-1.

I'd expect to see Markovic maybe come on later in the game on the right and Henderson dropping back to take Emre's place.

Once Lallana is fit I'd expect him on the left, Sterling on the right and Henderson replacing Emre in midfield.

The most interesting will be to see if Brodge maintains Manquillo and Johnson as the starting FBs for this game (with Flanno & Enrique both still returning to fitness I think he might).

Lallana, Markovic & Flanno should all be fit for next weekend

Will Adam really be back this early? Great news if so - a few sub appearances and time on the training field and then we really will have a selection headache!

Oops my mistake, according to Physioroom they will all be back by the 17th (inc. Borini) except for AL who is slated for 13th September. Sorry !

No worries - was going to say, quick recovery! Can't wait to see him play, hopefully we have a run of wins under our belt when he returns.

I have a feeling Johnson will start the season as the LB of the club. Rodgers will be choosing between Flanagan and Manquillo for the RB spot and Enrique will be in the doghouse.

Allen instead of Can for me too, otherwise same team as Dortmund.

I've always felt that Johnson actually plays better at LB than RB !

We should win this at a canter with that squad. High in confidence after a good pre season and great last result.
On contrast, they have turmoil at the club and the mid table squad they had last season has been raped and pillaged, including the manager.
4-0

Bring it.

Whomever we start with should give us the 3 points. We need to get out of the blocks quickly.

Same team as Dortmund, hopefully Lazar will be fit enough to take his place on the bench. We really need to win this game as we have City next, but this will be a lot tougher than we're giving it credit for. Koeman is a good coach, and Southampton still have a good side.

A scrappy, last gap win is what we need.....

.... To lull City & Spurs into a false sense of security before destroying them both in quick succession.

Spurs are going to be interested, I have no idea what to expect from them, Pochettino is a very good manager, and they've gone completely under the radar this summer, I worry they could be looking very good.

Hopefully Lambert will get half an hour or so at some point for the standard goal against your old club ritual.

Is Manquillo ready to start though?
Maybe it would be better to start Johnson and Enrique in a game like this.

I'm guessing it'll likely be:

-----------------Mignolet----------------
Johnson--Skrtel--Lovren--Enrique
-----------------Gerrard----------------
--Hendo--Can--Coutinho-Sterling-
----------------Sturridge---------------

Johnson looked alot better on the left yesterday though and I was really impressed with Manquillo.

As I mentioned above - the FBs situation is the most difficult to call (now that's new) ! If this is our bench : Jones, Sakho, Allen, Markovic, Lambert, Ibe and Flanno. There is no place in the matchday squad for one from Manquillo, Flanno or Enrique. I think it'll be either Flanno or Enrique on the pretext of not being fit yet.

I think yesterday's starting line-up is what Rodger's intended to start with against Southampton but Can may have slightly blotted his copy book with an iffy performance. I think one of Allen or Lucas will play instead.

And Lovren too! Maybe time to start a ritual of 'keep a clean sheet against your old team' !
