For this one, I wouldn't be surprised to see one of our debate inducing CMs dropped to allow Coutinho back in.

Fulham are there for the taking and I think we will see:

-------------------Mignolet--------------------
-----------Toure---Skrtel---Sakho-----------
Johnson-----------------------------Cissokho
---------------Hendo---Gerrard--------------
--------------------Coutinho------------------
--------------Sturridge---Suarez-------------

We could quite easily see Lucas play instead of Hendo but I think for a weaker team at home, we will only play 2 of those 3 players. If Enrique is fit i'd start him, or even look for someone else to play on the left.

I'm not so sure Cisshoko will get a game after that horrendous display. Could be :

--------------------------Mignolet------
------------Toure--------Skrtel--------Sakho
Flannigan--------------------------------------Johnson
---------------------------Lucas-------
---------------Gerrard--------------------Coutinho
------Sturridge ---------------Suarez -----

Thing is, swap Flanagan for McLaughlin and we'd potentially have two marauding wing-backs again, as the 3-5-2 demands.

I'm struggling to see how Flanno is picked ahead of him - McLaughlin is made for the wingback role. Flanagan (as much as he's improved) simply isn't.

He will be eased in, as he should be in my opinion. Throwing him in after Johnson being unavailable a last minute, at the emirates, in a top of the table clash, is not the way to do it.

I suspect he'll bottle it and continue with 3 centre backs again.

.........................Migs
Johnson Toure Skrtel Sakho Cissokho
..................Gerrard Lucas
.......................Coutinho
................Sturridge Suarez

I'd play this:

.....................Migs
Johnson Skrtel Sakho Cissokho
......................Lucas
Moses Gerrard Allen Suarez
..................Sturridge

Rodgers needs to bring his A-team to this. Agger and Allen. We simply NEED to get back to our own way of at least trying to control the game, dictate pace and win possession and we certainly do NOT need a flat 3-man central defense against Fulham either.

.....................................Mignolet.........................................................
Johnson/Toure........Skrtel.....................Agger...........Enrique/Sakho
...........................................Henderson...............................................
.................................Gerrard.............Allen..........................................
.........Suarez.......................Sturridge.....................Coutinho..............

I don't think any of our central defenders have played poorly of late, on the other hand 3 at the back are NOT helping us out especially when the ONE central defender in the team who'd actually thrive from being allowed to roam forward are being kept on the bench. Then it is just a flat back 3 with 3 good defenders waiting to defend. Some may then add that is their job, and it is, but it is also in the greater benefit to the team with more possession and greater composure at the back. Especially when your midfield is not very capable at retaining possession either. We need ballplayers in the team and that means Agger and Allen should both be picked against Fulham imo.

Some of us knew that Rodgers had lost the Emirates on beforehand mainly because of his choice of formation and secondly to some extent his choice of personnel. When your options on the wing are Cissokho who is struggling massively and young Flanno and you don't have ANY midfielder that can dictate play when in possession you are bound to crash and burn against Arsenal, blatantly obvious.
I even think he knew this too why he was so quick to change formation and a player as soon as half time, Rodgers just didn't dare to change "a winning team" on beforehand. I think he showed a lack of guts here, but that's just my opinion of course.

Despite my concerns with regards to Allen in the no. 10 role I simply don't think Rodgers have any options left. Alberto obviously isn't ready, Aspas is injured and more of a winger, Moses is a winger, Suso is in Spain and neither of Gerrard or Henderson are fast enough in movement and mind to be the one binding us together and Coutinho is as much use on the flank.

Allen, whom never really scores or assists, at least has shown he can play in triangles, make himself available, keep the ball moving at pace. We would benefit massively from this as a team especially with Coutinho back as he should be allowed to roam in central as well as Suarez from the other wing.

If neither Enrique nor Johnson are fit I would defo pick Sakho and Toure for the wingbacks instead as they are not any worse when going forward than the options, though far better defensively.

This is just my 5 pence, but I really think now is the time to pick ourselves back up and find our way back to the basics and drop this slightly desperate 3-5-2/5-3-2 counter-attacking mode that seemed to be ignited more by the fact we have one too many CB and one to few creative midfielder rather than some tactical managerial shrewdness.

That sounds like our set up like Soton - doesnt work.

I think it will be 3-5-2 against Fulham.
GlenJo and Enrique as our wing backs.

..............................................Mignolet.........................................................
McLaughlin..............Skrtel.....................Agger...........Johnson

Flanagan had started one premiership game for us before yesterday, no?

McLaughlin would have been much the better option. He's ten times the player Flanagan is going forwards and with three centre-backs behind him had cover should he make the odd mistake.

McLaughlin..............Skrtel.....................Agger...........Johnson
................................................Lucas...............................................

That's the badger.

Vs. Southampton: Mignolet, Toure, Sakho, Agger, Skrtel, Lucas, Henderson, Gerrard, Aspas, Moses, Sturridge

My suggestion: Allen for Lucas, Coutinho for Aspas and Suarez for Moses. Johnson for Toure if fit and Enrique for Sakho if possible.

Don't quite see the familiarity despite the formation?

For those questioning Flanagan being picked at the weekend, does anybody know if McLaughlin had travelled with the squad and Flanagan was the only option?

I think that we can get away with 3-5-2 against Fulham but we should revert to 4-2-3-1 and start dominating midfield. Arsenal exposed our limitation in 3-5-2 and outmuscled us in midfield. Considering that we had 5 in the middle this is significant. The minute we changed to 4-4-2, we got a foot hold into the game.

Close.

Henderson/Gerrard and Coutinho behind the strikers, but pulling wide. Suarez and Sturridge down the middle. Lovely.

I just don't have a great feeling about a Skrtel/Sakho partnership. I don't think they'd quite offer us the composure needed. It may seem harsh to perhaps drop Sakho as he was one of the best out a poor bunch against Arsenal, but he has just arrived here and he'd perhaps even thrive from getting time to settle a bit more and learn from his first handful of games.

I am literally going to fall of something (hopefully only a chair) if Rodgers doesn't use our weak performance at Arsenal to make way for Agger in the team. If he doesn't I think he has made a good case for us selling him come January. No need to keep him as 3rd of even 4th choice CB here imo.

You said Toure/Sakho as wing backs no? If the others werent fit. 🙂

I'd maybe rest Toure for this one. He wasnt at his best vs Arsenal.

Skrtel Agger Sakho could be a very good back 3.

The problem against S'oton as I see was the severe lack of creativity and a playmaker rather than the CBs out of position mate.

Aspas and Moses are both wingers that are probably best in a counter-attacking set-up. The Lucas, Gerrard and Henderson combo lacks the player who can dictate play and set up his teammates why our wingers got to look even worse than they is. It was a setup with no balance overall in the attacking mind of things why it ended a bore and uninspiring 1-nil loss.

For those questioning Flanagan being picked at the weekend, does anybody know if McLaughlin had travelled with the squad and Flanagan was the only option?

If true, it still begs the question why, when Rodgers planned to continue with a 3-5-2 and use of wingbacks, he preferred Flanagan in the squad to McLaughlin.

Or why Kelly remained on the bench instead of taking Johnson's place?

If he is on the bench as a sub RWB, and the RWB gets injured, he should slot in. If he isn't deemed worthy, then get him off the bench!

Its about time rodgers grew a pair and dropped one of the CB's so that we can go back to a back 4. Knowing him he'll just play either toure and RB or sakho and LB just to get 3 in.

---------------------------mignolet----------------------------
johnson-------toure-------------sakho------------enrique/cissokho
------------------------------lucas------------------------------
------------------gerrard----------hendo---------------------
----------------------------coutinho----------------------------
---------------suarez------------------sturridge--------------

Any time I've seen Fulham they've been shite, drop a centre back and return to our pre wing back formation. We don't need an extra defender at home, at times last season we were basically playing with wingbacks anyway despite only having a back four.

I hope to see a reaction from the players and we're way stronger with a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Some of those teams mentioned above would be nice, but let's face it - Gerrard is not getting dropped is he?

Would really like to see Allen play.

We're also more effective when playing counter attack overall.

I can only remember two goals all season that involved more than four passes.

Our defence hasn't been the problem though, our midfield has.

Our defence hasn't been the problem though, our midfield has.

People keep banging on about our midfield being the only weak area whilst our defense have not kept a clean sheet since the 3rd round at home to Manchester United, leaking goals left, right and center. Is that only down to Lucas and Gerrard you think?

Defense may not be the main problem but it hasn't been the solution either and I don't think overall it has helped out as much as we would've liked. Individually they have all been decent enough but as a unit they've lacked balance, influence and composure.

Oh how I wonder what the answer is

Perhaps ilori

Or recall wisdom?
