A few of the posters on here should calm down a little.

There are 7 points covering the top 8 teams.

Nothing is won, lost or decided as yet.

A win next weekend and the attitude will change again.

Attitude will change, reality of the situation will be the same.

The reality is that there are 7 points covering the top 8 teams.

The reality is nothing is decided.

A win for us would mean that we would be closer to Man U. If my maths are correct there would then be less of a points gap, this is not abstract it would be real.

All true, but is our defense suddenly going to not be shit? Is our central midfield going to stop being such pushovers? I don't see those things changing (the latter maybe with the addition of aquilani). It's not just the scum I'm concerned about either, all of Chelsea, scum, Arsenal, and Man City have better squad depth than us with none of our glaring weaknesses. I hope to be as optimistic as you, we'll see after the scum game.

Irrelevant as far as why we lost. But they should ban those balloons at games. I'm sick of seeing them scattered around.

title already slipped away.

I hate to be a DB about this, but I say this not just because of our league position, but how we got there. Defense is a shambles, if anyone in CM gets an injury we are done, etc. Aquaman basically has to hit the ground running and have the best ever debut season for a foreign player for us to stand a chance, I think.

if only we could redo 08/09...

We are only 7 points behind with most of the season to go .... however I have to agree with you. We need a massive turnaround but people should not forget we were without our 4 best players (from a $$$ perspective at least) in Gerrard, Torres, Masherano and Aquilani.

Froggy - PLEASE stop caLLING aQUILANI ONE OF OUR BEST PLAYERS - hE'S NEVER KICKED A BALL FOR US.

I'll allow you to re-read my post then amend / delete yours as appropriate.

And I'll "allow" you to go back to page 6 of this thread and delete / amend YOURS as appropriate.

Whether theoretical or from a financial perspective, some bloke that we have no idea about is NOT one of our best players.
You have too much time on your hands - you went back to find that !?!

Whether he has played a game for us or not - the fact he is so highly rated in Italy and expected to be a star of the Italian team in the WC gives more than a hint of his quality, as does his transfer price. Unless you prefer to count Kuyt or Babel ?
No mate - I read it at the time.

And using that logic, Morientes was one of our greats.

We did look dire today. It's easy to see that there is no confidence currently in this team, and this may change as football is a game of momentum and self beliefe.
However, there seem to be genuine problems in this squad - our midfield is light years away form the midfield we've had in the last few years. Xabi's absence is clearly crucial and Lucas is definitely not ready to lead our midfield, and certainly not when he has the even less experienced/talented/ready Spearing. I don't know anything about Mascherano's condition but I think leaving him if fit was a big mistake. Same regarding Riera.
The defence looked poor today, but let's take into account the new formation and the fact that the MF was far from controlling this game which applied extra pressure on the defence.
We also offered very little up front as Yossi had a poor game and Babel didn't take advantage of the chance he was given today, leaving Kuyt to do it all by himself, which he certaily couldn't.

Bottom line- we did miss 4 key players in Gerrard, Torres, Mascherano and Aquilani (he must be considered as one), but that's no excuse for such a poor display. Here's hoping for a quick and dramatic change in form and confidence as these 4 return to the side. It's still only 7 points and MU and Chelsea haven't convinced so far that they are gonna run away from the rest of the pack.

The really depressing and worrying thing about this defeat is that it didn't come as a surprise at all. As I said earlier, even on paper Sunderland had probably the better team out there today. Take away Gerrard, Torres, Mascherano and Reina, and our squad is no better than most midtable sides.

I honestly think it was Rafa's worst side since he's been in charge.
Nah. The team that played Reading away two seasons ago was the worst - Crouch on the wing FFS. That will never be beaten.
