Liverpool Target Schalke Captain Benedikt Höwedes
by Charlie Yaxley March 8th, 2013

German centre-back set for summer move to Anfield.

Liverpool are set to make a summer approach for Schalke captain Benedikt Höwedes.

The imminent retirement of club legend Jamie Carragher, and the possible summer exit of Slovakian defender Martin Skrtel, means Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers is almost certain to bring in at least one defender during the summer transfer window.

The Liverpool hierarchy have identified Höwedes as their top target after some impressive displays in the Bundesliga by the German international.

Höwedes is rated as one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga alongside Dortmund pairing Mats Hummels and Nevan Subotic, and has been closely followed by Liverpool scouts for some time.

The centre-back has risen through the ranks at Schalke, becoming their club captain at the tender age of just 25 years old.

Höwedes’ contract with the German club expires at the end of next season and the club are likely to move the player on during the summer rather than face the prospect of losing him for nothing.

Club officials are still holding out hope of persuading Höwedes to sign a new deal, but with Schalke looking likely to miss out on Champions League football this year, it is thought the defender considers the
summer to be the right time to seal a move to the Premier League.

Höwedes has just signed a new contract with Schalke, unfortunately, until 2017. It doesn't rule him out, but it won't but a cut price deal now.

How has Garay looked in Portugal?

He was pretty promising as an up'n'comer at Santander in Spain but the move to Real was a disastrous one.

Before you go all 'Ryan' on me I know we are most probably not in the market for a striker. If we are however it would be one for the future imo and perhaps also a player with attributes and traits not too similiar to Suarez, Borini, Sturridge, Coutinho, whom for all their qualities are pretty alike when it comes the physical aspect of the game.

Anyways this Andreas Cornelius chap from FC Copenhagen keeps on impressing and with United, Arsenal, Inter and AC Milan all said to be interested, who knows, maybe we are looking as well.

Here's his two goals (second is a real beauty from a strikers perspective), two efforts on the bar as well as a few splendid touches from yesterday:

are there any decent brits out there for us, any top talent from lower leagues, a diamond in the making.

Just don't like only being linked to names from abroad, fantasy footy type players.

A good mix needs to be maintaned

Pesam have provided us with a few names in the past, one of those, Zaha, is heading to United it seems. I agree though, it's equally important to make sure the talent, especially in the region, are well registered.

By the looks of our Youth-sides however it does look like we've actually done quite a good job of late. Especially that Ibe lad has made me all excited, former Wycombe.

He'd be worth it for his name.
He's nicknamed "Corner" actually.

The funny thing about him is that he started as a winger. A tiny, slim little winger too whom thrived from pace and technique. Then he ate a few boars or something and grew into this 6ft 4 (194 cm) oxe.

That makes him a bit different than your usual big striker type, as he's not only still very fast but has also got a splendid technique and can turn a defender too.

Potentially quiffing as I've only read page 1 but I don't think we should sell Downing. He has found his confidence and he is a player whose main attributes aren't ones which would detirorate with age (e.g. Pace, Acceleration, Stamina) so I would keep him in the squad. He is also working well with the other forwards so why cut him out?

I think we should focus on sorting out the defence and we will find greater opportunities to rotate some of the periphery forwards like Sterling, Borini, Assaidi (if he stays)

Love watching us at the moment!

His primary weapon is pace.
He has a tiny arsenal of techniques.
1. flick the ball wide and use his speed to beat his man and put a cross in.
2. flick the ball inside and use his speed to beat his man and put a shot in.

He will get slower. And thus less effective.
But I agree, we shouldn't sell him. We should do all we can to replace him though. He'll be a good squadie for a couple of years.

I disagree that pace is his primary weapon, he just happens to have some.

(JM, this isn't directed at you)
He is playing well in a side that is scoring a lot of goals. For me this makes it an area we do not need to spend big money on (it would take a high fee to replace him with someone significantly better) when there are other areas where we would make much greater improvements over current personnel which should therefore be prioritised.

If he keeps playing well then he is not the priority, if he gives us more Downing Mk 1 then he is.... it's down to him really.... as it always was.

Pepe - to the Gooners for 12M
Skrtel - to Shakhtar Donetsk for 10M+ Armenian playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan
Coates - to Serie A for 7M
Shelvey - to Stoke for 6M
Borini - to Serie A for 6M

Leaving us to buy 3 CBs and a GK? Risky...
Risky it may be but realistic too. Both Wisdom and Kelly are CB's playing out of position and learning all the time. We'll definately get in an experienced CB and while I don't like Lescott for the quoted 4M he may just do it is allows us to invest in decent and combative CM.

The Summer window is going to be interesting and determine whether we'll be challenging for Top 4 place.

But it surely is too early to judge? He scored 9 for roma in a very defensive league, and can play across the front 3 with great movement. At the very least he will provide a very able cover, and at best he'll be a consistent scorer.

If he has another hell season with injuries then I'll understand, but now? Just seems harsh.

If Reading go down and if we could get him on the cheap (£4m-£6m) I'd love us to sign LeFondre. If you play to his strengths (which Reading never have) he has the potential to be the best "finisher" since Kevin Phillips (in his heydey).

Ironically his ideal partner would be Carroll (who we'll sell). IMO Carroll and LeFondre together would be a lethal combination in that you'd get the best from Carroll i.e. the pressure on him to score would be removed (even though I'd expect him to score 15+) and LeFondre would bag a hatful from all Carrolls knockdowns.

Maybe it is, maybe it isn't, but if you compare the money spent on him to the money spent on the other attacking players we've signed this season(Sturridge/Coutinho), you can see why I'd think we could do better with the money.

I don't hate him, or think he's shit, he has the potential to be a decent player, I just think we could do better. If he stays, and starts actually contributing something to the team, then I'll be more than happy.
