summer spending

I think the good news here is that we have quite a few saleable assets. Carroll we'll obviously lose a lot of money on but we'll get at the very least 10M, which is still a good sum of money to put towards the kitty. Then there are fringe players like Spearing, Wilson and Pacheco that could raise another 5M between them.

That's 15-20M that we could get without actually missing anyone - more if Assaidi does leave. Ideally we'll loan Shelvey and Suso out and get some money in loan fees - best for the players and for us I would think. They won't get the required playing time and we'd be stupid to sell either at this moment in time.

With Carragher retiring and potentially both Skrtel and Coates leaving there is a real need to bring a couple of defenders and there should be money available for that with the outgoing players hopefully netting us a minimum of 12M in fees and savings in wages.

So now that's a conservative 30-40M before we really go to work on the squad. 20M will probably go towards the defence. That leaves the rest and potential further sales (Downing) to strengthen the midfield and forward line.

It would seem on the surface that we have enough money to do what we need to do. We just need to stop with the stupid transfers for a couple years. That'd be real nice.

Wilson's contract expires in the summer. He's already suggesting he'll stay at Hearts.

It does seem for the first time in years that our priority isn't to offload shit. Carol and Jay will be sold for a combined 18m or so and then we wait and see what happens re. Sktel and Pepe. If they stay we will have a sack of cash to buy a shit hot CB and a top DM.

If they go then their respective fees should allow top class replacements too so I'm not too fussed.

All in all this summer should be the first time since we came 2nd that we have the chance to really put ourselves in the mix

I think we're looking good, but this season could and should have gone a bit better, I do think we've progressed but it's definitely been a case of two steps forward, one step back, we've edged upwards but next season is crucial, as is the Summer spending. I like the look of our attacking play though and Sturridge and Coutinho seem to be really big assets for us, teams should be scared of that front three..

We've all forgot another big point about next year, isn't it the first year the new TV budget kicks in?

As for Downing, I hope we sell him, this is the last year we could get a decent amount for him, say £10million, and he can leave having done a decent job considering his form the last few months.

Thinking about priorities assuming Pepe and Sktel stay I'd go with:

1. A killer DM
2. Centre Back that can head the ball and be gobby
3. Cover for LB

Sale of Carol, Jay and possibly Coates plus a wedge from the club should easily fund that.

Lets see how the next 10 games go. If he's still flying, why sell?

If Downing continues on like he has, it'd be a great time to sell him in the summer. We can do better in the long term, and his price will be at it's highest in his whole time here.

Skrtel will go.
Reina will go (unfortunately).
Assaidi will go
Carroll will go

We'll get about 25 million for them. If we're lucky.

Downing will stay
Henderson will stay
Borini will stay.

No I think that lot will fetch at least £35m.

Surely the long term is Raheem and Stirling?

Well, yeah, but I think we could do with another option too. We probably now have our most options in attacking terms in a long time, but one more top option and we could actually challenge.

If we don't get £35m for them there's simply no point selling them as we wouldnt be able to replace them. Assaidi will go for £3m or so, and the other 3 are all worth £10-12m as a minimum.

Carroll 12-15M
Assaidi 4-5M
Spearing 3-4M
Coates 2-3M
Wilson 1M
Pacheco 1M

That's around 25M, which is not that bad. I'd keep the others unless they want out (possibly Skrtel, Reina). We'll definitely need 2-3 CBs (if Skrtel wants out we're left with 1 senior CB who used to be crocked all the time) and then possibly another versatile attacker, a DM and a backup LB. We should be fine.

Very optimistic with those figures. More like;

Assaidi 2m
Spearing 250-500k
Coates 3m
Wilson 500k
Pacheco 500k
Carroll 6-8m
Skrtel 8m
Reina 6-8m

But your figures are way too pessimistic! Spearing for £250k?! He's a decent young pro, £1m at the very least. Same for most of your estimates.

We had agreed Spearing's sale for 3.5m in the summer (which *he* turned down). Mr Moo's figures are Mr Poo.

You all seem to forget we have to pay up their contracts and pay their agents fees too

Reina must be on £3m a year and will have 3 years left in summer

I don't think it works quite like that, does it?

For a start, it would only apply to players not wanting to leave. Secondly, surely the only amount payable would be the difference between the existing contract and the new one offered by the buying club.

Finally, these costs aren't normally factored in when transfer budgets are mentioned, so the consistent thing to do is to discount them now as well.

I remember both Rafa and Comoli making comments that their spend budgets including wage costs. When a player is sold there is sometimes noise about contract termination payments and 'loyalty' bonuses. Joe Cole made sure we paid up his contract before getting a full wedge with West Ham.

Obviously Joe was an extreme case but I'm sure there is always some cost in terminating a contract. My employer certainly has to.

Didnt Williams give an interview where he said he hated Suarez more than any other player and not in terms of just playing against him. He called him a cheat
