Summer rebuild 2023

His speed is only okay post-TRex, but his heading ability is still insanely good when we’re under pressure or facing set pieces.
I think he’ll be around for a long time. We just need defenders that can cover for his negatives while he excels on his incredible positives.

I think thats something that has been exaggerated a lot on this site.

Virgils top speed recorded in 2019 pre knee injury: 34,5 km/h

Virgils top speed recorded in 2022/23 post knee injury: 33,3 km/h

Thats roughly less than a 4 % drop off.

Is the drop off related to how fast he can get to that speed?
That is very relevant I think, and evident as well. And if we’re getting anal with Hansern’s figures, we’d have to put aside the % and just think in much more basic terms.
If an attacker initially makes a run behind the defense and said attacker runs at 33km/h, Virgil of 2019 catches up with him (like he did vs Mane back when he played against us for Southampton). If it happens now, he doesn’t catch him. We can talk about 4% as if it’s meaningless but it’s very significant.

I think there’s 2 things to consider about Virg.

Is he fit for purpose in the system we want to play - I mean, he is, but how fit for purpose?

Would he be an attractive signing (even in a seasons time) for a good team that could use his strengths to build a strong defence without exposing the weaknesses that come with time?

I look at Thiago at Chelsea - and despite being older than time itself (aka James Milner) he’s still been Chelsea’s best defender.

Even a lesser Virgil is worth keeping to help an understudy to come through unless the money we is insane which I don’t see at present.
I would imagine any CB we sign would be initially as under study like Ibou 2 seasons ago.

I have no idea. A decline in acceleration is obviously related to the injury and getting older as well. But as highlighted above its exaggerated on this site.
He can continue to play in our system and he hasnt lost much post the injury.

Thats a lof of ifs and buts without having anything of substance to back it up.

We can all agree that he's had a drop off given the injury and getting older. But its clearly been exaggerated on here in regards to how significant its been.

Saw this on the athletic and thought it was interesting. By strength by position and how many years left are on contracts

Jota as option behind Diaz to balance it out.
Morton is a DM
We don't play with AM's so why have they included that? Harvey has never played as an AM for us even if that make be his best suited.

Doak I can see going on loan, 1 of Ramsay/Bradley too, as well as Fabio.

Could be a bit light for right sided wingers, bring home Chiesa.

Some of you may have noticed I am not posting youtube links to various MFs purely because I am actually happy with who we have been linked to strongly, namely Thuram, Kone and Viega. I would not mind JWP as an addition if we got 2 of those 3 mentioned
Mount - £55m, why?
Lavia at £50m when we can get Kone for £30m

No substance? Watch him not catch up with an attacker and then try adding 1 plus 1.

Pavard could be a smart purchase, as he covers RB and cb. If we don't have ibou, he could be ideal in our setup
I think we should cash in on Ibou, he is made of the same stuff as Naby, its only matter of time before it impacts his play. We'd get £70m for easy and we then get The Croatian.

I think we should try and replace ibou rather than sell. He's an excellent defender

We saw evidence of both last season. We also defended worse as a team, had a disjointed midfield and most of our players performed at lower level than you'd expect. There are loads of reasons to why our CBs didnt look their best.

To say he didnt catch up to an attacker in that and that situation is just not enough in all honesty. Its ifs and buts. Just as the reasons above.

His top speed is marginally the same. That we know.

What's the difference? Ibou out Croatian in
Croatian is a left sided CB isn't he? Meaning then our right sided CB is inferior, or out of position. If he's a rcb, it still means we need to long term replace the lcb

Be honest with you, I haven't looked in CBs that much... I am just alarmed at how many games Ibou has missed, and I really don't want to see Gomez deputizing that position. I think both Spanish Steve and Fabs could do a better job

He absolutely can still play in our system - but he is noticeably not the player he was and I can’t imagine he’ll get better in a system such as ours.

I’m not saying time to go, but it is time to start considering that the end is coming.

Do you just feel embarrassed writing the word “tits”?

Is that why you persist with Spanish Steve?
