We were not going to sign mata but i think we do need to improve our scouting network... 55 million on Downing and Carroll is wasting a lot of cash for 2 fairly average players.

Alexis Sanchez, Frank Ribery, Arda Turan and Diego Capel.
 
Maybe we do, but its still only 9 games into the season. A lot of people need to chill out a bit and let the players in question get a full season to prove their worth. If they havent improved, both Kenny and the players will have to answer a few questions.

Just look at Dzeko. Fans were labelling him shite and a flop. This year he's on fire. Its to soon to judge any of our new players.

Sanchez and Ribery are a no go. Capel couldnt even get into the Sevilla team at times and went to fucking Sporting Lisboa as noone else wanted him. Turan was an option, but I'm not sure he's what we were after. Not a natural leftwinger and we have plenty of those.

That's Man City, they can afford to sign another 10 strikers if Dzeko doesnt perform this season. We on the other hand is stucked with the average players and wait until next summer to offload them with a quarter of the price we paid for them to some mid-table team.


And also its reasonable to wait for a foreign player to adjust to the Premier League style of play etc etc unlike Downing and Carroll who is currently playing in the league before we sign them.
 
You can dress it up any way you like, but judging someone after 9 games is just stupid. There is 29 games to go this season.

Why is Sanchez a no go? He cost almost the same as Downing. Ribery a no go also? Why is that? If we show an interest to sign him who knows he might come and play for us but no we didn't. Capel still have what it takes if he's given the chance.


Arda Turan not a natural left winger but i am sure he can play there better than Downing.
 
Downing definitely needs to improve. He's not performing as well as he did last year for Villa.

Really Andy? I think that's unfair.

Downing v Nunez on every level is a complete mismatch and the poster knows it. If he truly believes that Downing is a worse player than Nunez than there are more issues here than I care to contemplate.

Its not thought provoking, its not provoking debate and if Ryan had posted it, I'd have told him to "get the fuck outta here!". Its a bilge debate imo.

There you go, I've posted on topic.

Oh and here's a thought, those knocking Downing should give him more than 9 games before sounding his death knell.

I saw no evidence that Downing going to improve or became a sudden top winger for another 29 games or 92 games for us. He has no attributes to become a top winger and the only reason why some on here willing to give him time is because he was signed by Kenny. Had he signed by Hodgson or Rafa people would start to get on him much earlier than me.

ok, 2 players off the top of my head, both younger and almost certainly cheaper (and imo better) than downing: payet from st etienne, griezmann from real sociedad.

Easy. An exception rather than the rule. Don't remember many other clubs being in for him do you ? I've no doubt as we progress we'll be able to attract better players but we need to progress first to do that. Converting more than 9% of chances like we do currently can only help that. Back to the original thread topic - Downing could have a had quite a few assists if our finishing would have been better. He's not a world class winger, no, but he has made a contribution to an improved team - a team that is misfiring in front of goal not in terms of creating chances.

That may (or may not) be so peter but I'm not part of the scouting setup at LFC so don't have an influence. I've said there's likely better out there than Downing - we simply have to capture them earlier and actually play and develop them - which is something again we have become woeful at - bringing through young players. Signs of improvement there though

That may (or may not) be so peter but I'm not part of the scouting setup at LFC so don't have an influence. I've said there's likely better out there than Downing - we simply have to capture them earlier and actually play and develop them - which is something again we have become woeful at - bringing through young players. Signs of improvement there though

i know you don't have an influence, but people like Hansern keep making out there were no realistic alternatives to downing, whereas most of us just don't agree - including you, it seems.
