doesn't matter: we can sell him for £10m next summer and get someone better in then...

And continue our famed strategy of wasting money year after year and wondering why we can't win the league.

you haven't heard? we've not won the title for aeons because we've not had an adequate net spend for the past 10 years.

i'll have to talk you through the details of it sometime.

We haven't had an "adequate" enough met spend for a bad or average manager to win the league.

A good one would have won us a title. Unfortunately there's about 5 good managers in the entire world of football.

for me downing is decent but overpriced. for that money we'd have been better off signing that mata from valencia.

i think he went to chelsea instead.

Mata didnt want to join us. When will people realize that and stop using it as an argument. IF he had wanted to come here we should obvs have signed him instead. But he didnt. So we looked elsewhere.

Oh ok didn't realise. Still, why not go for a world class performer like ribery or alexis Sanchez instead? I reckon they'd both have been better options.

Absolutly. But I think Sanchez had his mind set on Barca from thes start and turned down both Utd and City for that move. Ribery would have been a great signing, not sure of price or wages ( apperantly on somethingl like 150 k a week ) but I guess it would have been massive. Not sure he would have joined us without CL either. Would have him in a flash though the ugly cunt.

Seeing as people have been using Mata, Aguero and Silva as examples of players we should have bought, then you just dont know do you.

Ah yes, that famed 'there was no better winger in world football available for 20M than Stewart Downing' line.

I'm going to have that engraved on Hansern's fucking tombstone. Nevermind we have a network of scouts all over the world, 20M pound to spend, the opportunity to play for the most successful club in Britain, and a fortune in wages to hand out. There simply was no one out there, in the world I might add, that we could get for that paltry 20M.

Sir Alex went to fucking Tijuana and bought a dirty skiprat for 8M last summer and he turned out to be the best finisher in the league. That's scouting, and using your money wisely. We couldn't do that, or anything close to it, because we weren't in the Champions League and no good players would have come to us.

Jeezzees Ryan, you're one big moany repetitive broken record.

Thats not even close to what I've been saying. If you cant understand it then just jog on.

The thing about Downing that grates me the most (and there's competition for that accolade trust me) is not who he is, but who he should be.

i.e. Juan Mata. Or somebody fucking quality who'd have fit into our system. Watching David Silva play makes me weep out my eyes and cock he's that fucking brilliant. He should be playing for us.

Instead we got simple Stewart. Who was bought not because he was Spanish and sex on a football but because we needed somebody to run down the wing and corss the ball onto Big Dunc's head. Which he hasn't done yet. Because he's not that good, and because that type of football isn't for us, but for fucking Ireland under Jack Charlton or something.

It's who he should have been.
LOL LOL LOL - F*cking brilliant post even though I think Downing is good enough for us. Love the bit about your cock weeping !!!

Give it up Hansern, not one of them has managed to salvage a name that would have come to us for that price. The point is valid that yeah, if the scouting network was good enough, we'd have found someone, but it's pointless bandying about half the names in this thread, given they've all joined clubs that are better off than us right now. And no surprise it's the same two posters who are always ever ready to give it out to English players.

Downing is a typical, no frills, overpriced English wide man, I think a few people said in the Summer that we'd tried to buy a team that would (on paper) hit the ground running in the Premiership (given we had no European football to look forward to), which has been an issue in past seasons when we've brought in foreign players who've taken time to adapt. It hasn't worked out that way but you see the logic behind it.

As for Peter still championing the 'net spend' cause, he's about the only person who ever mentions it from that perspective, because it's the only way to cling to some credibility for the amount of money we've had readily available to then go and spend on dross. Not that Kenny is looking immune to that either.

it was a joke to wind Rosco up with (not that i thought it's actually work)!
Nice try though!

Seriously, it's a shame the money on Downing and Carroll wasn't better spent, I'll take that, just like in previous seasons under Rafa and Ged, we've bought good players and average ones, it's frustrating we haven't seized the initiative while we've had a bit of financial clout behind us. You can almost see why owners end up reluctant to put big money into a club when they've seen their money pissed away.

for me there is a big difference between downing and nunez or pennant and the difference is downing service has been pretty good, I mean, seriously, how accurate does his crosses need to be before they are converted to goals.

look at the cross for henderson, really, could have he made that cross any better before jordan hits the back of the net. what about the cross for kuyt? I blame our profligacy more then I blame downing.

you can argue downing can be more direct but downing was all about putting service in the box rather than go past players and dragging the ball so why have people's expectations changed. the team needs to work on it's finishing more than downing has to work on his crosses. I bet if you look at chart for chances created (a better barometer for contribution than assists) I bet downing compares favorably most of the league.
