Sterling

Yeah, if you think about when Rafa took over, the likes of Spearing would already have been 16 and developed, so when you consider he's only broken through in the last season or so, the players who really benefited from the academy shake up would be the ones who were much younger. The crop we've got is probably as good as it's been for a longtime, so hopefully it's an upward curve and within the next three years or so we'll start to see the investment bear fruit.

I think we are too cautious with these lads, we need to chuck them in on occasions to see if they sink or swim. The only time we ever do is out of desperation, I think they go dull waiting for their chance time after time.
Kelly Flanno and Robinson showed that there is something when they had a chance

I've not watched much this season, but whenever I've seen Sterling he's been disappointing.

I know Suso had a dip as well. How's he doing now?

And I don't see it in Morgan either 🙁
Morgan came on as a sub yesterday. He still looks painfully low in confidence, but he'll come back. Suso looks like he's slowly getting back on form.
Suso was/still is suspended. Three games I think for a red card against Man U.

But I still rate him as the most talented player in the reserves.

Yeah I agree Vlad.

Yep, fair point Vladders, especially when you see some of the dross getting away with it in the first team. We seem willing enough to gamble money away, but less willing to take a punt on someone who's already on our books. With a team that's crying out for attacking flair, and kids in reserve who are positive and athletic, it seems a no brainer.

i'm not saying it's the definitive list - and there are a few older lads who i suppose are much more deserving of recognition and a few of them (*) are just purely on hype at this point - but here's 15 young players we have are very highly regarded and you'd think have a good chance of reaching the level of someone like Spearing:

Conor Coady
Andre Wisdom
John Flanagan
Jack Robinson
Seyi Ojo *
Alex O'Hanlon *
Marco Bueno
Jack Dunn
Jordon Ibe
Raheem Sterling
Suso
Jerome Sinclair *
Ryan McLaughlin
Brad Smith
Joao Carlos Teixeira

i think every single one of those players is an international at some level: that's just not a level of quality we've had in the past.

The fans are so impatient at the moment. Poor Ayala got murdered when Rafa gave him a few games and now he has left and is proving a lot of his doubters wrong. Kenny could afford to give the youngster a chance last season because Roy lowered expectation to a previously unheard of level. Not that I disagree with your point, but the fans are equally culpable for the youngster being overprotected.

Well it's worth destroying 20 below standard ones if it means finding one gem.

I always liked Ayala, I didn't understand why we got rid, he always looked capable and was towering too, just what we needed after Sami departed.

is Bueno the Mexican chap we were after ages ago?
yeh, i think he's joining in the summer. made his mexican league debut recently, scored a couple of goals: looks to have great movement and acceleration.

i agree about Ayala too, i always thought he was worth persevering with. seemed to have a lot of key ingredients for a centre half, and you'd expect the rashness in his game to become less of a problem as he gains experience.

It's so hard to tell nowadays. Fans just view players as commodities and are happy enough for the academy to treated as some sort of battery farm for talent. It's easier to morally justify for the high earners but a lot of the kids in the academy will be relying on football to make their living with little or no back up plan. Personally I believe that the academy should be self sufficient first and anything above that is a bonus.

The truly world class players will make it no matter what, it's up to the staff to maximise the number of maybes that make it.

EDIT: I also agree with the Adorjan love (although I was certain Pálsson was going to make it).

EDIT 2: Battery farm is a poor analogy, but you know what I mean.

I assume the people running the academy know what they are doing and will tell Kenny when the players are ready.
So they probably arent yet.

true. It must be disheartening to see Downing flapping about on the pitch when you can't get anywhere near it though.

imho, though, Adorjan is one of a group of players (Silva, Morgan, Ngoo, Sama, one or two others) who all look really good prospects, but for one reason or another, i just don't think will quite make the grade. Adorjan's problem for me is he has no real physical gifts, so the only position he can realistically play is in the hole. no doubt he's bloody good there, but he's gonna have to be fucking fantastic to get a chance in the first team in such an important and competitive position. it helps so much for a youngster to be versatile, especially if they can fit in somewhere out wide where they'll have a bit more leeway to make mistakes.

Very true.

Conor Coady - Nothing tells me he's good enough. Granted I've only seen him in a DM/CM position (he's also a CB) I think he's all over the place.
Andre Wisdom - Strong tough CB, I used to rate him a lot but lately I've seen to many errors from him.
John Flanagan - A no nonsense player. Still not good enough going forward to play for Liverpool. I can't see him becoming as good or better than what we have.
Jack Robinson - Very intelligent, quick player. Doesn't do anything extravagant and seems mature for his age.
Seyi Ojo * havent' seen him
Alex O'Hanlon * no opinion
Marco Bueno - not here yet
Jack Dunn - Promising.
Jordon Ibe - not seen him
Raheem Sterling - Hasn't been able to produce the goods for the reserves like he did with the U18s, still time though.
Suso - IMO the most talented player in the reserves. Might not be having the best season according to some but the talent is there. I think he'd do a lot better with better player around him. (that could be said about most of them)
Jerome Sinclair * - no opinion
Ryan McLaughlin - He's very quick but I haven't been that impressed tbh.
Brad Smith - No chance in making it IMO, I just don't think he's good enough. Poor defender.
Joao Carlos Teixeira - not seen him except in the Next gen tournament, where he's been brilliant.

Spurs away next week, looking forward to it.
