Sterling & Suso

Downing was one of our Better performers in the latter part of the season.. He dislodged Sterling from the Starting line up...

People forget he was only called up a first team member due to the lack of squad depth... The lad has potential.. but he needs games to fulfill that potential and that is something he wont get much of here next season...

Downing played better than the season before, but lets be honest it'd be damn near impossible to play any worse. He's the weak ink in the front four and needs to be gone. If Raheem's path to the first team is blocked by Downing, we should clear that path.

I think Downing has more to offer, but I won't lose sleep if he is sold.. Thing is, It wont be just Downing though thats blocking his path...

I'd probably sell Borini over Downing.. in and ideal world both if we brought in decent replacements...

In general I agree with everything you just said. In Raheem's case, it would be in my opinion, a retrograde step for him as he's already proved he can play in the first team when called upon and has acquired a full season of experience.

I get your point, mate. I'd trust Rodgers on that. Afterall, he's been in youth football coaching and has shown previously with the likes of Caulker that he is ready to give a young player a regular spot if he thinks they're ready/can cope with it. In Feb this year, he mentioned about how Sterling 'lost his zip' due to fatigue and about taking 'a wee step back'. Regular football at a top club like ours, where you are expected to win majority of the games, as compared to relatively less ambitious clubs can be pretty different. I'm not saying he's mentally weak but he might not be ready for that. Besides, with the court case issue behind him, he can concentrate on his football. The coming season could be really pivotal for his development as a player.

Semi-related, we should send Shelvey out on loan to a Brazilian club. In a year we'll have a bronzed Shelvinho with flair.

Or at least a couple dozen Kodak moments anyways.

I've seen nothing of either of them that they should warrant anywhere near a regular starting spot for us. If we could get them to a premier league team that would guarantee game time, we should defo get them out on loan. I wouldn't bother if it was championship football though.

That's a bit harsh. Sterling looked very exciting when he first got a chance in the team. (How quickly they forget) He was just played far too much once his form dropped - I mean, forget the 'weakened squad' stuff, he was still being played in the spring, when we'd strengthened and he had a tear in his thigh! He should have been used in short bursts and given good rest periods. Palace is a good shout for him now, although his mother is almost as much in love with London - and miserable about Merseyside - as is Mrs Konchesky, and I fear Raheem will fancy staying there (at a bigger London club) once he settles back in the lifestyle again. I'd still rather Rodgers kept him where he could monitor him closely.

Sterling isn't pulling up any trees at the moment. Can you see him coming off the bench and changing a game? I can't so sending him on loan to get regular footy could be the best option.

Jeez...they're only 18-19. Give them a break.
There's still time, people.

Personally I'd rather keep Sterling because he can be useful next season and I believe he has enough quality go get game time for us.

Suso should definitely be loaned out.

that's because he's been injured for months and protected from burnout. notwtihstanding all of this, he finished 7 in our player of the league season and early on was the few bright sparks. He needs to play games and lfc.

Just look at what loan spells did for the development of Cleverley, Lukaku, Welbeck, Whilshere etc. I think Suso can definitely benefit from a loan spell also. Please don't send him to Spain or the championship. Get him to a club where he will be allowed plenty of game time and get premiership minutes under his belt. It was crazy not to allow Pacheco stay at Norwich that time. Instead he was farmed around Spain. Did one club loan him to another club during his loan spell in Spain? WTF was that about?

I'd be happy to let Sterling go on loan aswel. He's shown he can cut it in this league with his excellent start with us. It all depends on who we sign this window. No point him playing League cup and the odd minutes off the bench for us. We need to think long term with him.

Good post except I think Raheem can actually challenge for a first team place with the experience he's gained and his potential and we'd be stronger with him rather than send him out on loan. Pre-season will tell.

I was on about before he got injured.

People shouldn't underestimate Inglethorpe - not that they are! but...- he was responsible for Spurs' youth squad getting to be as good as it now is, and he's a very, very, good youth/reserve coach. I really rate him to improve the likes of Sterling. Sure, actual match experience will be invaluable, if it's with the right club and the right position, but we should be cautious about just chucking any one out at this stage when Inglethorpe is so attuned to what Rodgers wants and knows the players and can bring them on. I can see the arguments both ways but, to be honest, I'd prefer to see Sterling move between the first team and Inglethorpe's ressies next season. Suso: yes, he's a classy player who probably needs the freedom to show what he can do here and now in a serious competitive environment.

I think Sterling should stay - he can definetely have a role starting in a few games and coming on as an impact player for the last 20 mins or so - I'm in favour of keeping him.

Suso, I think needs to go out on loan to a team where he will play regularly, because he isn't gogint o get that opportunity at Liverpool yet and he needs it - Norwich, Southampton, Swansea, Palace - maybe a top Championship side, but one where he'll play regularly.

Shelvey might benefit from going to somewhere like West Ham, WBA or any of the above teams for a season - a lot will depend on who we bring in - the positions that worry me are the wider attacking player assuming we play something similar to last seasons 4231 with Coutinho continuting in the middle of the 3.
