Steaua Bucherest v Liverpool

I've said a few times that I was a wee bit worried about Pacheco after his few cameos last years, BUT there's no way we can give up on him after his games against N'hamton and Steau tonight. As Oncey rightly points out - Nani took time to be what he is today. Now Patches may NOT come good, but giving up on him would be pathetic.

Kelly will probably have a shit spell at some point, so hopefully people don't turn on him. He's gonna be a good 'un.
I thought he was pretty shite tonight to be fair (and I'm a big fan).

He played on the left in the uefa cup qualifier and was shite.
which game was that? the only other appearances i remember were northampton & rabotnicki, and he played right-wing in both of those.

Nani had lots of obvious raw talent and physical assets, I suppose.

Patches doesn't really, so I can see why people are a bit underwhelmed.

Ah well.

Rabotnicki he started on the right then after about 15 minutes or so moved to the left for the rest of the game I think.

Nani was shite until about a year ago regardless of the potential.
Now he looks a proper player. Its waaaaaay to early to write these kids off. Evidence would suggest its also waaaaay to early to play them yet too.Kelly being the notable exception.
Kelly should be in the first team.
I don't know about that. Robbie Fowler made his debut in the league Cup aged 18 and scored a goal. Two weeks later in the second leg, he scored five goals. He belonged in the first team straight away because he was an absolutely phenomenal player.

It's unfair to use a player of Fowler's ability as a benchmark however Pacheco turns 20 next month and should be producing more than he is at this stage of his career.

You're not going to get the best of players like Cole and Pacheco if you can't keep possession. It's no surprise that they look totally lost with the ball hoofed over their heads for 90mins.

You only have to look at the difference with someone like Maxi when the team is actually attacking vs sitting back and soaking up pressure.

Pacheco has talent and potential, but in this current team he's not going to really show it unless we see drastic improvement from the team he's asked to play in.

I've said it all along, when we get a new more attacking minded manager who will focus on posession and being in the oppos final third. Then will we get the best out of Joe Cole,

To be fair, these sort of away games are always low on football, when we play the next Europa home game most will play again and we'll hopefully play with more intent and verve. It's tough to get the best from them in those sort of games, but they're also a necessary evil I guess because they need to learn how to grind out a result too.

I get the general gist though, we need to play better football, but Sunday and a couple of other games have shown we're getting there.

Maybe so, but sometimes you have to call a spade a spade and that was a bad performance. I know it was a b-team, in a 'hostile ground' and we didn't lose, but you still have to expect a little more than what we saw out there.

Yeah I kinda agree, but we've seen similar performances in those sort of games from the full first team for years too. It doesn't excuse it, I'm just saying, it obviously has a bearing going to those sort of places.

bang on. although hodgson deserves credit for playing the kids tonight, i still find myself irritated by his use of pacheco. he's got next to no chance being played out on the wing in a team with zero intention of moving the ball around. you might as well not fucking bother.

if we think he's got any potential at all, the time to test it is the odd 20 or 30 minutes here and there in games like blackburn and west ham at home, games where we're comfortable and enjoying decent amounts of quality possession. what i fear will happen is that this will be taken as another sign that he's 'failed' and we won't see him for the next 6 weeks.

Wasn't the goal yesterday simply return to Anfield a) qualified and b) without sustaining any injuries.

We did that. For this particular game, end of.

Well we are heading to the situation where you might as well read the result in the papers the next day and the game has been just as you expected it to be anyway. All games are there as a chance to push thing in a direction. Show us fans a glimmer of something. Break a barrier. Build something. Anything.

My point is that our normal game is obviously good enough when we needed a simple point brought back home with no sustainable injuries. That is what our standard is good enough to do these days. We have marginalized our club to be a joke, and a fucking dreadful uninteresting team to watch. We can as well read the result in the paper instead. Because the game against Steaua was just as good as most performances anyway, or should I say just as uninspired and boring as any game anyway.

So when we are in this situation we can not allow the games to be just about a simple point. We need to make more out of games. We have to take opportunities to build optimism and belief. Confidence. Among players, but even more important among fans. Why should fans spend huge money to watch Liverpool these days? Because every now there comes a totally unimportant game where we can accomplish a simple point and sustain no injuries, and that we are capable of?

We are in the entertaiment business. People need to get a kick from watching. People need to look forward to games. People need to feel thrilled, and I promise you that we are giving nothing of that these days. And there is no fucking sign that we will start deliver it either. SO we will continue for the foreseeable future to drift around 10th place, with boring overpredictable football just waiting for our best players to demand their transfer away while we have Carlton Fucking Cole and NZogbia on hold to streghten our team.

When the situation is like that we cant afford to let any fucking game be about securing a safe trip home with no sustainable injuries.

Ok it was the youngsters and reserves. But they were set up to defend a point and to pump the ball to fucking nowhere when they got hold of it. And they secured a point and no major injuries. But what if they hade dared to try something? What if we had dared to outplay Steaua. To keep posession and doubled up on the flansk. Gone after them and tried to hurt them. Showed pride in what we did. Shown hunger for playing good football. We had of coursed risked loosing 1-0... But imagine we had won 2-0 instead. And played well at the same time. That would have been cause for optimism. For a small expectation that some of the reserves/youngsters actually pu pressure on the overboring first team. But they are not allowed to. Because this worked in both Halmstad and Örebro not to mention Neuchatel Xamax, and thursday it worked for fucking Liverpool as well.... Yippi kayee.

There've been a lot of games under Hodgson where we've been rubbish; I'm surprised you're picking on this one.

We are not in the 'entertainment' business; we're in the winning business, or at least we used to be.

The point gained was enough to gain qualification for the next stages.

Hopefully we get back into the winning business soon.
No we're not.

Fuck off. The entertainment business my ringpiece. We're about winning.

Which is why everyone wants to win a shit game 1-0 rather than see a 3-3 draw.

Football and sports in general is entertainement. And there is so many people who is willing to pay to be entertained that the money have start to get more important than the titles.

Winning business... Hmmm in this forum alone the huge majority was willing to swap a Eurocup title against a 4th place last year. And I guess the same guys aremore than willing to do it again.. But of course we are in the winning business.

And why choose this game? I dont know. I guess I was just realizig that people will grasp any straw to justify a result. "We did what we had to do, and what we came for. A dull draw and no injuries." And what we did was in the end perform the normal standard uninspiring shitpiece of football that we allways do. And what it will give us in the end is a few decent away results in games which actually means nothing. it is sad.
