So who do we want/expect/hope?

Kenny only got 12 months because we were poor and he was stubborn. He didn't meet the objectives set out despite spending heavily.

The new manager won't get anywhere near half that transfer kitty and we're building for long term success and sustainabilty. Whoever comes in will be expected to improve our league position on a smaller budget. Getting better results, improving the squad and spending less will represent "success" in FSG's short-term view. The managers league performance this season may well determine whether he gets an improved kitty next summer. It will all be performance related.

If Henry's requirements are top 4 and there's a transfer kitty of 30M to get it, I'm not sure I'd be flying over to Boston myself.

With 30 mill + sales towards new players, a top 4 challenge is very much a must.

Our squad badly underperformed and our tactics were in some games notgood enough.
A new set up might get better results out of the current squad, and adding 2-3 quality players will improve us greatly.

We dont have to spend 20-30 mill on a player to get quality.

I look forward to the sacking and hiring the next manager and the next manager within the year as things are panning out

my gut reaction is to think that we'd be insane to think we could reach top 4 without massive investment, but i guess newcastle did pretty well this season, theres nothing to say we couldnt do better

A top 4 'challenge' isn't top 4 though, is it? Top 4 is a very big ask IMO with that group of players and only 30M to spend.

Forget ManC and ManU, Chelsea are going to spend a billion with a new manager, leaving us, Arse and Spurs for 4th, Geordies maybe. Arse were crap at the start of last season, Spurs were crap after chrimbo. And we still weren't even near them. And I bet you they both spend more than 30M on their already-better-than-ours squads.

If the next manager spends over 100M on shite players, has us playing dire football and finishes up fucking 8th in the league, then I'll happily want him out too.

What's your point?

It's not really 100 million ... We've already all agreed the owners haven't put in that much money into the team (i.e. Torres for 50 mill, Babel for 6 mill etc).

That we judge the manager solely on the league. If he's not good enough, he goes ...

This net spend thing is pointless LTW, I had it with Rafa, the fact is someone said, "here's £100m over two windows, go spend it".

How it was generated was neither here nor there, unless someone wants to argue that we should have had more money to blow.

I don't think it was all wasted anyway, but anyhoooo... it didn't do our league position any good.

Of course net spend makes sense. If some of the momney generated to buy players comes from sellign players then the manager has to replace those sold players first. Whether or not Kenny made the mnst of the money available is a different argument, but to say that we shoudl ignore the fact that a lot of it came from player sales is ridiculous

what's this whole Martinez Tuesday press conference about ? I don't get why he's having it . To say he's leaving wigan but not decided on which team moving to or ?

I'm not saying we should ignore the fact. That's missing the point completely. People say "oh but we only spent £27m net".

We still spent £100m on Carroll, Suarez, Downing, Henderson, Enrique etc.. Regardless of whether they were replacing out going players, we still splashed £100m on players with there being some debate over the success margin.

The point is, we generated revenue and replaced 'some' players with inferior ones. Who did we have to replace anyway, really? Poulsen, Torres, Meireles, Babel and Konchesky? So that ended up being Henderson, Carroll, Adam, Downing and Enrique? Why bother with the net spend argument. We managed to sell those players and start afresh. We managed to generate £70m odd in funds and have another go at getting it right.

Of course net spend is, as always, completely relevant. But in this case citing it kind of misses the point because even in net terms it was still one of our biggest in 20 years and what it generated was our worst league season since the 1960s. We can argue for hours about how much the cup runs should compensate for that, but, those aside, the season was a fucking shambles - I agree with Ryan, if the next guy produces the same, from a similar investment, then I'll want him out as well. The only difference would be that this time no-one would complain.

The only prob with this is this is that I'd thought there was a plan B that the owners had wanted to implement before 'bowing to fan pressure' and taking Dalglish on. I think what actually happened was that the owners didn't have a fucking clue and were delighted to have a bit of direction, a singular choice.

So while Dalglish had to take responsibility for a dire season in the league, if the idea is to replace him with someone who has never been to a final as a player or manager and whose crowning glory is getting a team promoted from the third tier of football - then sacking him was an empty gesture.

Exactly.

A top four challenge isn't top four, but had Kenny delivered something like Pardew did at Newcastle (a veritable challenge, just falling short in the last game or so, but with definite signs of progress), I think he'd have got another season.

The same goes for the new manager, whatever you think of him now.

THE future of Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez remains very much up in the air, as the Spaniard continues to soak up The Lying Rag in Barbados.

It was widely reported on Sunday that Latics would be holding a press conference this coming Tuesday during which Martinez would reveal whether or not he will stay at the club.

However, the Evening Post can reveal that is NOT the case – and club officials are baffled as to where these reports have come from, and how they have been taken as gospel. The 38-year-old met Liverpool’s owners in Miami last Thursday to discuss the managerial vacancy at Anfield, but it’s understood he’s still not made up his mind whether to accept that challenge.

It must be the "he likes to run everything" statement that Mr media hungry Whelan made, that is holding up Martinez's appointment. DoF not his liking I bet.

I hope he does not compromise, if he does not want to work with a DoF then he should stick to his guns and turn down the job.

I agree. Only one guy should call the shots and should stand or fall by his results. Too many cooks spoil the broth!

Well that's helpful - it points out the misinformation and then suggests yet again he's been offered the job.

All this media bs is making me dizzy. I should just switch off and stay away from the interweb but alas, I can't live with all this uncertainty. Its driving me crazy!

Martinez may well have picked up on the fact that there is a wave of visceral hostility to him from the "supporters."

Aye it's funny annoying to say the least.
I have an unhealthy obsession with all things Liverpool. In the middle of doing everything, I find myself randomly checking for snippets of information and news just for peace of mind but don't find any. Bloody hell!

Portly, like AVB? Has this Klopp story got any substance to it?
