So the Title

There was a brief 20 minutes before Macheda scored vs Villa when it looked like we'd win that title, but that was it really. This is a better chance. Coming up to the business end and we're absolutely right in it. I think maybe the only season that compares would be 1997, but I can't remember exactly how that panned out.

Utd came to Anfield and beat us. Completely depressing. Beckham with a laser like cross for Cole and a superb free kick that James could only look at.

LOL yeah I remember *that* part!! I meant the wider build-up, going back to this sort of time and into April.

Btw wasn't the Beckham cross actually to Yorke, in a later match?

I think their first goal was a header from a corner, maybe Ronny Jonsen.

I think we will win the league if we win all our games. Unfortunately I also think we won't win all our games.

Actually i think you are right. and that exptended their lead to 7 or 8 points. It was a must win game for Roy.

Yeah but they're going to start when they draw with the chavs next week.

I hope so. Was hoping the Spurs would cause them to drop a point, but the useless white trash couldn't do the job at home despite dominating and taking more than twice the number of shots.

The Gunners' string of tough games is coming to an end soon - Chelsea, City, Everton in three of their next four games and then it's a list of games with moderately tricky opponents. In the ideal scenario, they'll pick up 2 points from the first two games, and Everton do us a favour and nick 3 points off them at Goodison Park.

We've shaken off Spurs and Everton, now we need to shake off these guys in the next few games.

I mean look at Gerrard's face. He's all smiles nowadays.

Look at the banner above Suarez. It's a sign that it's on !

Chelsea (6 of their last 8 in the bottom half), and ironically Arsenal, both have easier run-ins than City. I am hoping that the CL will distract Chelsea and the FAC Arsenal, but City have nothing left but the PL so may be able to overcome their tougher matches. Way too close to call with so many inter-Top 7 matches to come. What an amazing season.

Latest % chance of us winning the title :

9-0-0 = 99.7%
8-1-0 = 96.1%
8-0-1 = 83.3%
7-2-0 = 81.7%
7-1-1 = 58.5%
6-3-0 = 51.9%

Looking at the table again, I just realized that were City to draw/lose in just one of their other games not against us, we will be in total control of our own fate in the title challenge. If Aguero doesn't return for them soon, I can see them allowing that to happen.

Chelsea surrendered their initiative with the loss at Aston Villa.

We must beat Citeh, Chelsea and Spurs. Do that and the title is in our hands. We control our own destiny.

I say we can and our recent performaces suggest that we will. We were not at our best in more than a few games and yet still won emphatically. Champions in the making. Thats the real heart of Liverpool. A throwback to the Champion years. I'm loving it!

City got a big win at the weekend. To get the 3pts after playing with 10 men for 80 minutes will have given them a lot of confidence. I'm still a little annoyed with Hull for being so shit.

We need Kompany to get injured because without him at the back they will definitely be giving teams a chance.

At lot is going to come down to our games against City and Chelsea, I can see us giving Chelsea a mauling at this rate.

It occurred to me last night that we might get away with a draw against Chelsea, as long as we're level on points with them at that point. That'd leave us needing to beat Newcastle on the final day.

Obv City have the points and gd advantage, but there's just something vulnerable about them IMO. I genuinely don't think they'll win the title.

Sorry, thought Chelsea was second to last. But there's also Palace away before Newcastle.

I think we can raise our games against City, Chelsea and Spurs and I imagine / hope the crowd will be up for it big time. We just have to hope that we get a bit of luck on the day - definitely due some against City.

The main thing we need to worry about at the moment is keeping up the good work against the lesser sides. As Stevie said, they need to treat Cardiff and the rest like Man Utd too. In my opinion, we've been guilty of complacency in some of these games this season so hopefully they've learned their lesson.

Jon Flanagan: Why Reds have title rivals "worried" after 3-0 win at United

Jon Flanagan believes Liverpool's stunning 3-0 victory over Manchester United will have their title rivals “worried”.

The Reds' emphatic triumph lifted Brendan Rodgers' side back into second place – four points behind leaders Chelsea with a game in hand.

Flanagan was one of Liverpool's standout performers as they clinched their first win at Old Trafford for five years.

“It was brilliant. It couldn't have gone any better for us really,” Flanagan told the ECHO.

“We dominated from start to finish. It was very comfortable.

“It doesn't get much better for me being a local lad and helping Liverpool win 3-0 at Old Trafford.

“We have put down a marker today. Momentum is building. I'm sure the other clubs up there will be worried after this result but we are just concentrating on ourselves.

“We all believe we can do it. We just need to keep pushing on. All the lads know we haven't achieved anything yet.

“Our target was top four at the start of the season and we are on target for that. Anything else is a bonus.”

Steven Gerrard put Liverpool ahead from the penalty spot 11 minutes before the break after Rafael had handled inside the box.

The skipper added a second spot-kick after Phil Jones shoved Joe Allen over and, remarkably, the Reds had a third penalty when Nemanja Vidic was adjudged to have brought down Daniel Sturridge.

The Serbian defender was sent off for a second yellow but Gerrard fired against the post. Luis Suarez completed the scoring with a fine finish late on as the Reds increased the gap between themselves and struggling United to 14 points.

“Stevie was brilliant,” Flanagan said. “He leads by example and it was just a shame for him he couldn't put away the third penalty for his hat-trick.
“We came here for the three points. We aren't too bothered with where United are, we're just looking to push on and keep improving.

“Before the sending off we were much the better side and created a lot of chances.

“It could have been four or five. Rafael was lucky not to get sent off in the first half as it was deliberate handball.

“We had been working hard all week on the training ground and that preparation showed on the pitch.”

Victory moved Liverpool past their total points tally for the whole of last season with nine games remaining.
In completing the double over United they also kept a first clean sheet at Old Trafford since 2004.

“The back four have had a bit of criticism this season but we've been doing a lot of work to try to keep things tight,” Flanagan added.
“That's two clean sheets in a row now and hopefully we can keep many more between now and the end of the season.”

There are no easy games in the league as Chelsea found out on saturday, but bar a red card etc this is how I see the run in;

I think Chelsea will only drop points in 4 potential games. Arse at home, Liverpool away, Swansea away and Stoke at home. Swansea and Stoke are games they should win but could fuck up. Stoke especially look in decent form and can get a 0-0.

City could drop points in potentially 5 games. Utd away, Arsenal away, Soton at home, Liverpool away and Everton away.

Arsenal could drop points in potentially 5 games aswell imho. Chelsea away, City at home, Everton away, West Ham at home 3 days after the FA cup semi, Newcastle at home.

We probably have to win 8 out of the 9 games to win the title. And we have to hope for some draws when the other teams play each other.

It's not even worth assessing, as the Villa v Chelsea game showed, you can't really account for decisions that effect the outcome of games. I think we'll all drop points, because that's about the only consistency that there's been this season.
