Yes, please, Joe

Joe Cole Goal v Tottenham 2
Has it been 20 games since the last time he did something brilliant? He might be just about due.

Cole shouldn't come back in for this, it should be largely the same team (probably minus N'Gog).

One problem we need to counter is the threat of VDV and Modric from between midfield and attack. Poulsen and Meireles should get a chance together again, but then I can see Kuyt playing wide right to cover Johnson against Bale, so the question then is who plays the role between midfield and attack for us?

I actually thought Cole was hitting some form when he got injured. Good games against Bolton and Blackburn. If he's fit I want him to play, and in his favoured position behind Torres. He's about the only player we have fit with some creative spark and vision.

Maybe, but he's one of those players who looks like he needs a run to get going, he's been out the team for a couple of weeks and this is a big game to go into cold.

Agreed

Also he's been shit in that position so far. That said, if it's between him and Lucas to take up the remaining place....

I really wish people would get this idea of Johnson at right wing out of their heads.

It's a nonsense theory based on fuck all.
Its not based on fuck all. Its based on the fact he's a shit defender who is great at going forward. So take away one and rely more on the other. Im not saying it WILL work or anything, but what exactly is the harm in giving it a go.
The harm that's almost always done by putting a square peg in a round hole, however persuasive the reason for doing it may initially look. Folk keep quoting Bale as a comparison, but Bale played at least as much at LM as he did at LB before going to Tottenham. Magic on the other hand is very inexperienced further forward, having hardly played there in comparison with the number of times he's played at RB - for which there's likely to be very good reason. It's theoretically possible that all his managers so far may have read him wrong, but I highly doubt it.
He's played as many times at RM for West Ham and Portsmouth as Bale did for Southampton. I didnt however make that comparison and im not even subscribing to it.
Its hardly a square peg, he's an attacking RB or old fashioned RWB who likes to play further up the pitch.
It hardly matters as it will likely never happen. If we had a RM who was pulling up trees or for that matter if Johnson was a rock solid RB then i wouldnt even suggest it. But there are plenty of examples of full backs eventually realising they are better in a more advanced position. If you dont agree then thats fine.
I didn't mean to be quite so vitriolic in my original post, so apologies for that.

Anyway, I just think the whole "he likes going forward to stick him at RW" argument is lazy and flawed for so many reasons. If he's not a great defender, fine - then work on that. He's not fucking awful at it for fucks sake; he's the England right-back and over time tweaks can be made to his game to make him more defensively minded. I've brought this up before, but when Ahsley Cole started out, he was a fucking rubbish left-back, and the same calls were made for Arsenal to play him on the left-wing, but Wenger resisted.

He was playing alongside Adams, Campbell, etc etc - Quality defenders that he could learn from. The same applies to Glenjo - he's got Carra there, Rio and Terry at international level - he can improve his defending, like Cole did, like Evra did at United (remember how brutal he was at the start of his United career? He used to be the traget opposing teams picked on).

Anyway, back to the right-wing bit. Glenjo hugs the touchline and plays 99% of the time up and down that wing. No problem with that, he's a fucking right-back, it's where he should be. If we were Stoke, or Newcastle, or the Republic of Ireland circa 1990 then great - his touchline-hugging, direct, get to the byline wing play would be great. We'd get crosses into the box, we'd get width, and Torres would have balls to attack in the air. But we don't play like that (Heh, I'm loathe to get into a debate about how we actually *do* play, cos we've got fuck all of a system, but regardless of that), fuck all teams in England or around Europe play like that. Right-wingers/right-midfielders/left-wingers (call them what you like) should not be stuck on the right-wing (or left, doesn't matter) for the entire game. It's their role in the modern game to come inside, lose their opponent, link closely with the central midfiel, get into the space between midfield and the forwards, link play, interchange positions, and genrally ensure that your team's play is less predicatbela nd one-dimensional. On top of all that, they've got to score goals. Some examples of good players in that role - Nasri, Nani, Dirk, Malouda, Barton, Young, etc etc. Billions of them. I have never seen any example of Glenjo being capable of playing that sort of role. If you want somebody up and down the wing, he'd be pretty good at it, but the modern day wide midfielder just doesn't play that role. Look at Meireles role for Torres' 2nd goal against Chelsea; drifiting inside from wide-right, winning the ball back in the centre 40 yards from goal and feeding Torres. Perfect example. I just don't see Glenjo doing that.

The other benefit of him at RB is that he has 5 yards of space in front of him when he first receives the ball. Most of his good work comes when he receives it on the halfway line and moves forward. He's got space to move into (albeit breifly) and he can take the opposition on, or link with Dirk or whomever. If he was stuck 10 yards further forward in your RM position, then he has Evra or whomever snapping at his ankles the second he receives it. No space to move into, and the ball gets shunted back to Carra or someone. Those 5 yards of space Glenjo gets from RB are vital, and when he was flying early last season - we revelled in giving him those 5 yards.

I'd far prefer to work on something that's fixable - like his defensive capabilities - and continue to let him maraud forward from right back where he's got the space, than try to shoe-horn him into a right-midfield role that I just don't think he's suited to at all.

To quiff the entire thread, No. No we don't have a chance. No one as bad as us has ever had a chance against a good team.

Oh wait, people beat better teams sometimes don't they?

So yes then, we have a chance.

Spurs are on a shit run of form at moment, whereas we're somehow second on the form table.

If Roy sets us up right we might sneak it.

Ryan, I think you're going ridiculously OTT about Magic not being able to play RW. He has far more of the ingredients needed for that position than Dirk, for example. He's quick, he's got two good feet, he's got good close control and dribbling skills. Most of the goals he's scored for us have been when he's come inside and shot with his left foot. I also think it's an exaggeration to say that width has become totally unfashionable. You mention Nani, Nasri et al, which is fair enough, but there are also players such as Valencia, Bale and Lennon who are more direct and still play at a high level. Ideally you'd have one of each type in your starting XI, as THAT would make you less predictable to play against. The 'wingers' we've got are all one-paced and always drift inside, so they are in fact quite easy to defend against.

I'm not saying that playing Magic at RW is certain to work, but to dismiss the idea completely seems one-eyed to me, given our lack of options in that position and the fact that Kelly is a very competent RB.

Maybe Mark Lawrenson should give Hodgson a call.

I CAN’T really see it happening I admit – but I really hope Liverpool go for it against Spurs on Saturday.

The home side will be coming off the back of a Wednesday Champions League game and they haven’t fared too well with that this season.

I genuinely believe that if you’ve just won 3-0 as Liverpool did against West Ham on Saturday, you have to try and build on that momentum.

The opposition might be of a higher standard but defensively, Spurs have looked extremely vulnerable this season.

Assou-Ekotto, Kaboul, Hutton – come on, you can comfortably get at therm.

The thing is, I think it’s pointless turning up at 0-0 and trying to hang on to it and maybe nick a winner.

Liverpool won’t get relegated and they won’t finish in the top four – so why not have a go?

IT’S not Liverpool Fabio Capello has to be worried about upsetting – after all, clubs and countries will never agree will they?

But the England manager has to be careful he doesn’t keep rubbing Steven Gerrard the wrong way; leaving him on to get injured in a friendly with France, taking the captaincy off him.

The way Gerrard has conducted himself since Capello took over means he deserves better than to be used and abused.
His FUCKING ABYSMAL away record suggests he won't.

VDV apperantly had a scan yesterday on his ankle, and Bale is a doubt for tonights CL game.
Spurs haven't won a game after their CL adventures this season, and if our manager had any balls we'd hit them from the start. With a week rest and the lads having some confidence, we can just take the game by the scruff of the neck and really have a go.

But we won't, as Roy Hodgson doesn't win away games, likes to sit deep and will restrain us from having a go. A point will be more than enough for Roy, and with that approach we will lose.

I would say that with the players Spurs have, we're probably much better trying to stay compact and hitting them on the break. As they proved against Arse, they like teams who play an open game. We do need to break much more effectively though, and that means more pace. I'd be tempted to start both N'Gog and Torres, and God help me, introduce Babel at some stage too. This would be the perfect game to try out Johnson in front of Kelly on the right too, but it is never going to happen.

I think we can get at least a point from this fixture, Spurs had another great night last night but as we have seen over the years its difficult to get that level of performance out of players twice in one week. We are arguably coming into this in our best for of the season (13 from our last 18 points available) and its fair to say the pressure now is on them to win not us as most people would make them favourites

We have to be attacking though, we will have the fresher legs so there is no point standing off and waiting for Spurs to do their thing thats exactly what they want. A high tempo game with us pressing all over the park will see them tire pretty quickly I would imagine and defensively they are no great shakes so its a matter of hassling and harrying their admittedly more talented midfield into submission. I would prefer us to go with 2 up front but i dont think its gonna happen so i think this will be the set up

--------------Reina
Johnson Carra--Skertl-Konchesky

Kuyt---Meireles--Lucas--Maxi
------------Cole
-----------Torres

Cole will play #10. Roy's comments this week indicate he will certainly play.

Fair enough, but I haven't seen him have a good game there yet.
He hasn't got the brain of a number 10, because he has a lack of experience with the position. If it was ever going to work it would need a lot of investment and patience from ourselves, which we were never going to give - not with Gerrard ruling the roost as it were.

He can 'do a job' there, but I'll be surprised if we ever see him shine.

So I take it that's the probable lineup?

Reina
Johnson Carra Skrtel Konchesky
Kuyt Meireles Lucas Maxi
Cole
Torres

I'd like to see Aurelio instead of Konchesky but besides that I guess this is the best we can put out at the moment and I'd be happy with it.

Reds boss Roy Hodgson claims Spurs are no longer “mugsâ€, but insists Liverpool can end a run of three consecutive defeats at White Hart Lane.

“Wins are hard to come by against the top teams and we’ve got to admit that Tottenham are no longer the Tottenham of old,†he said. “They are a top team, an expensively-assembled team. We’re not playing against mugs anymore.

“We’ve had a very good run now - one defeat in eight is a good run at any stage of the season. We have to be happy with that, but we’re not stupid.

“We know that if you go to Tottenham it could be two defeats in nine, but, if we can play like we have been, we may spring a surpriseâ€
Oh just fuck off Roy.
I hate his comments of that nature. Why should it be a SURPRISE that we win? It will certainly be a difficult game but it shouldn't be a surprise if we win. Fuck.

I defend plenty of his comments from the hysterical crowd on here, but I fully agree with you there.

He hasn't raised his ambitions since Fulham. Sack the useless bellend. Now.

I hate his constant talk of accepting defeats, its a deeply cynical attempt to lower expectation to the point where his inept management is considered to be the best we could hope for. I dont buy into the idea that he doesnt know how to handle the media, he knows exactly what hes doing and its sickening. Imagine a professional player having to listen to that negative self limiting bullshit before every game, its a self fulfilling prophesy

It's why the old duffer is 'well respected within the game'. He's always talking up and praising the opposition, but is doing so not out of respect or courtesy, instead it's an attempt to reduce the expectations on himself and the club he's dragging down with him.

I honestly think he believes that if achieves the same set of results with this team as he did with Fulham then thats about as good as can be expected. Even managers of promoted sides dont talk their teams down in the manner he does, the sooner he is gone the better, his job is done in my opinion, he was here as a safe pair of hands (ha) during the transition/take over. Thats thankfully concluded and Hodgsons tenure as manager should be gone with it. I didnt expect that NESV would sack him first day but they really should be prioritising a new manager before any investment in the squad
