So how do we improve?

Which teams in the league above us have a dedicated Defensive Midfielder I don't think anty do. Below are the figures they have scored/conceded
Utd 62/31
City 48/24
Chelsea 55/28
Spurs 44/30
Arsenal 50/29
Everton 40/32
Liverpool 49/34

Mikel, Phil Jones, Parker, Javi Garcia, Coquelin, Diaby, Gibson

The defence and goalkeeper:
Reina will probably leave. Coates is on his way out and Carra will hang up his boots.
Ter Stegen would be a fantastic signing. Our new centre back need to be in the Hyypia mould.

Midfield:
We really need some more bite and strength in midfield. Lucas isnt back to his best and he gets outrun a lot these days.
Someone like Wanyama would be perfect. Able to drop down into a defensive 3 when our full backs attack, but also good on the ball and adds a physical dimension.

Attack:
No need to chop and change to much. Hopefully Borini can stay injury free and be an option.
If we get the right offer for Downing I'd sell him. Ince or someone like that, maybe someone experienced who can play in several positions, like Gameiro.

None of them are anything special though really, are they, they all do the DM job when they have to, but that's about it.

Well no, but wrongly highlighting that there aren't any defensive midfielders at better clubs and rightly highlighting that they aren't anything special doesn't disprove that Liverpool need a DM. People may not agree with it, but there would have to be a better case presented than that for it to be worth listening to, IMO.

I think the system we're playing demands one. The real question here is whether supporters feel Lucas is up to it, because he's going to have it harder than in the past because we're attacking in higher numbers. I'm not counting him out, but he is coming back from a serious injury, and adding some competition is only going to help the club.

I agree, but I wasn't really saying we "don't" need one, just that we don't have to go all out for a specialist, we just lack quality, power and athleticism which doesn't necessarily have to = a DM. Hendo covers alot of ground and helps compensate in some respects, adding to that again might go a longway to addressing the lack of control in the middle, as I said, Allen and Lucas are too static as a partnership.

Their problem is not that they are "static" though; Allen covers a fair bit of ground when on form and same can be said for Lucas. The problem is they are not on form, especially Allen. And another problem is even then on form, they don't offer very much in terms of physical presence. So it's an open question for me whether a midfield that includes both Allen and Lucas in it can hold their own in the Premiership. So far it hasn't happened.

I still think we have a decent squad but we need some top signings in order to challenge for the title.
As some of you say we have some quality players in the squad but I think we need to replace them with better players.
For instance, Reina, either Agger or Skrtel and Lucas. But it's not a priority imo.
There's only one spot in the starting line up that we desperately need to improve on and it's the right wing.

Souness was a beast of a midfielder who dominated all over the place. I'm sick of players being constrained, constraining themselves, by the notion of a DM. It's a waste of a place.

Yes indeed he was, 30 years ago.

When football was played on pitches made of sand, by a bunch of mostly drunk players, attended by spectators who'd probably got their by horse and cart.

Hasn't he got you ignore ryan?

Shame, I liked your post and was optimistic for a fight

Raid Schalke for these two.

Defence sorted.

I like Diame. He's exactly the type of midfielder we need and he only has a 3.5m buyout clause. The guy is a beast on the pitch, has a amazing level of energy and is a good passer of the ball and isn't scared to shoot. Didn't understand why we didn't go for him in the summer and then january. No idea who we could get at CB but i want him to be a hyypia type player with pace, NO TO ASHLEY WILLIAMS.

No point looking for a gerrard replacement, there isn't one. What he brings to the team we won't replace. We would need to change our midfield style to get two players to do his job.

The present Gerrard is replaceable, but we won't replace what he once was. Agree about Diame. He looks decent.

I think Enrique has been playing very well of late and i like it when both he and Johnson play, neither of them are the greatest defenders but both are quick and can pass and fit in with the attacking fullback mode.

Sigh. This old Johnson can't defend chestnut. Johnson is good at defending, as is Enrique, fullbacks are not our problem in the slightest. Look where our goals conceded coming from, usually right down the middle.

Yep, that's what I'm seeing too. Too much space is being left in front of the CB's and they are unable to deal with it. Many of our defensive frailties are the result of an imbalanced and undisciplined midfield.
