Just heard a brief snippet on the radio that Carlsberg have announced a 37% rise in profits, attributed in some way to the takeover of Scottish & Newcastle.

Gives something else to bring to the table........

Danish brewer Carlsberg hope to complete talks on extending its sponsorship of Liverpool within a few months, its chief executive claimed.

"It's always hard to set a deadline for negotiations but within the next couple of months, we'll hopefully have a conclusion," Carlsberg Chief Executive Jorgen Buhl Rasmussen told Reuters.

Rasmussen added that it was difficult to imagine that Carlsberg would switch to sponsoring any other English football club.

From the BBC:

Pre-tax profits at Carlsberg jumped to 3.025bn Danish kronor (£344m; $584m) in the second quarter, up from 2.247bn kronor in the same quarter last year.

The Danish brewing firm increased its market share in Russia, East Europe and Asia, it said.

Beer lovers tend to continue drinking during recessions, but Carlsberg said the market environment was tough.

It added:"The intensified focus on efficiencies more than offset the ongoing market challenges."

Beer markets will contract in Northern and Western Europe, it said, with the Russian beer market forecast to decline by 5 to 6%.

As a result, it forecasts net revenue of about 61bn kronor, down from a previously forecast 63bn kronor.

"The market environment remains challenging and some markets, in particular Russia, are now expected to decline more than Carlsberg previously anticipated. Consequently, Carlsberg has reduced the net revenue outlook for the year," it said in a statement.

so if 3B kronor = 350M pounds.....

60B = 7B pounds (ish)

say 2.50 a pint...

fucking hell thats a LOT of pints....2.8 billion.... that CANT be correct though.... i was enjoying thinking about it mind you.... PUB.

On a side note, how good does our strip look with no sponsor:

Looks like we may be getting a new sponsor.

Liverpool set to net £15m shirt sponsor: Banking giants in frame after missing out on United

By Charles Sale Last updated at 11:37 PM on 06th August 2009

Star appeal: Liverpool are confident they can land a big-money shirt sponsor

Liverpool, despite the serious financial difficulties facing American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett, are confident of quickly finding a big-money shirt sponsor to replace Carlsberg.

The lager brand are not expected to renew their 17-year association with the club when their £8million-a-year deal expires at the end of the season, especially with Liverpool looking to almost double the price to £15m a year and Carlsberg's exclusive negotiating period having finished.

London-based international banking giants Standard Chartered, who just lost out to insurance broker Aon for Manchester United's shirt deal, are already the leading candidates for the Liverpool kit.

The fact that they were competing strongly with Aon, who are paying £20m a year for the United sponsorship for four years from 2010-11, also suggests the bank would meet the steep Liverpool asking price, even in a recession.

A £15m annual contract with Standard Chartered, whose sponsorships include the Bangkok marathon, would put Liverpool level with Chelsea, who have recently extended their deal with Samsung at that rate until 2013.

LONDON -- Danish brewer Carlsberg's partnership with Liverpool soccer club is the longest in the English Premier League. Now, Carlsberg, the soccer club's official sponsor since 1992, has given the latest indication that a new deal to extend the partnership might not happen.

"We will have a conclusion of a deal or not this year. But, like in every discussion, everything has a price, and we need to assess the alternatives," Carlsberg Chief Executive Jorgen Buhl Rasmussen told Forbes after the brewer released its second-quarter earnings. Carlsberg's ( CABHF - news - people ) current sponsorship deal with Liverpool ends by mid-2010, and the brewer held an exclusivity agreement that prevented the club from exploring other options until July this year.

"If I were a brand, I wouldn't want to be associated with a football team for so long, as you end up alienating supporters of rival teams," said Stefan Szymanski, a sports economist at the Cass Business School at City University in London. "And advertisers don't want their products to be permanently associated with just one team." Szymanski also said it could be beneficial for Liverpool as it would bring new bidders: "If a team settles with a sponsor for a long time, the sponsor is willing to pay less and less. Looking for a partner brings fresh competition that could increase the value of the space in a shirt."

"We haven't tended to see football clubs maintain a very long term relationship with a particular sponsor, and moving on would make sense," Szymanksi said. "Most of the sponsors tend to be consumer products, and there are an awful lot of consumer products with great potential to sponsor a club like Liverpool."

Shares of Carlsberg rose 5.3% in afternoon trading after the company beat forecasts for its second-quarter results thanks to aggressive cost-cutting measures. The firm also said it had gained market share in Eastern Europe and Asia.

But Carlsberg's Rasmussen remained cautious. "Our assumption is that market conditions will continue to be challenging this and next year. I don't think we will see a big improvement, though it won't get worse."

How interesting.

We could be sponsored by some fannypad manufacturer, with their logo being a big dirty blob seeping into their fucking '-with wings' product, and I still wouldn't give a fuck.

Jimmy Greaves said something similar when someone wrote Shoot! magazine complaining about Bass Breweries sponsorship in English football.

He said he wouldn't care if it was Durex.

As for Carlsberg, rival fans don't drink Carlsberg because it's not very good; not because they sponsor Liverpool.

New Liverpool shirt sponsor deal close

August 10th, 2009

Liverpool look set to end their 17-year partnership with Danish brewers Carlsberg at the end of the 2009/10 season, according to reports.

Carlsberg and the club have not been able to reach an agreement on a new shirt sponsorship deal, with the Reds looking to double their price from the last time the deal was extended.

Reports suggest that American financial giants Standard Chartered look set to sponsor the Reds for around £15million per year.

Standard Chartered recently narrowly lost out to Aon in competing to sponsor Manchester United.

Either way, Liverpool are due to have a change in home kit by Adidas from next season, under Premier League rules.

shirt c was my first.

I read somewhere that the overall annual shirt sponsorship tally for the entire league has fallen from 76M to 65M ( or something like that)

I hope we can get that magic 15M that the mancs are getting, Carlsberg got us cheaply.
