Yeah, Fabinho was good.
But you could see he was thinking as a midfielder in a lot of the situations, and thats pretty natural. Albeit not good.

Hopefully Matip is available soon. I think thats the CB pairing we need to count on until January.

Salah and Mane were both very good in spells. Firmino seemed to remember that he needed to contribute in the second half, which was a welcome sight. Jota, as has been said, looks like a good buy so far.

The last few months have been a bit weird. We have games where we look like we're back - Chelsea, for example - and then the next we'll look rubbish again. I don't know whether to put it down to Covid and all the associated factors (and of course we're not the only ones struggling).... but I can't shake the feeling watching us these days that this is the product of under-investment in the team over the last few years and the inevitable stagnation and struggle that follows it. Particularly when it comes to the team selection headaches. A few of us have been talking about this for a while and have usually been shouted down for being negative.

I'm still furious about the penalty, it should never have been given in a million years.
It seems that the official line is they looked at the "foul", but decided the error in giving it was not "clear and obvious" (sort of implying it was an error, but understandable) and then went on to compound this issue by turning it from a free kick to a pen.

That's some fucked up logic - if they saw it wasn't a foul but felt they couldn't overrule it, the least the could have done would have been to NOT award a pen

I get the fact that if it was a foul, it's a pen. I don't like it, and I feel like we've have tackles on the line where it's been a free kick.

What irks me is how they can talk about clear and obvious errors, when there's an obvious error happening right fucking there.

"Is it a foul?"
No.
"Does it look like it might have been?"
Maybe?
"Fuck it, pen"

They could have just let the initial call of a free kick stand.
But it was Martin Atkinson on duty, so no surprise about the penalty.

The one shining light VAR has given us, is actual quantifiable evidence over how shit the referees in our league are

Always used to be "ah he didn't have line of sight" or "he can't tell if he's in the box from there". Now we're seeing they're wrong, and they can't justify it

They need to be mic'd up like in rugby

Why though? They were checking for a pen and it was a pen. The foul was inconsequential in that decision making process

The issue isn't the giving of the penalty, it's the fact that they refused to overturn a free kick when it wasn't one. That's an error that results in the game changing. It's imperative that they act appropriately

Let's say they gave a free kick rather than a pen, and then they scored from that free kick. Would you be happier than the way it panned out? No, because a wonderful tackle was incorrectly given as a foul

If they are going to get involved, we can't pick and choose what parts we want.

It wasn't a foul, so give us the ball and move on.

It’s like they’re deliberately asking the wrong questions. There should’ve been 2 potential questions. First one should’ve been was it a foul then followed by was it inside the box?

The answer to the first would’ve made the second irrelevant.

It's like they've done the complete opposite to the Pickford issue

Focused on the second rather than the first, and last week it was the first rather than the second

I think I'd hate it if VAR was so good they never got any decisions wrong again.

Being able to have a moan about the ref has always been part of football and long may it continue.

Obviously I'd prefer the wrong decisions go against other teams.

Fuck knows what actually happened last week as there was conflicting reports. Either way, they got it massively wrong.

Silver lining yesterday was that they didn't check VAR for the Maguire hug in the Chelsea game so Utd and the Chavs both dropped points, so this morning I got to grumble about VAR and be happy with the 3 points we got. Season's only been 6 games in but feels like I've aged 100 years.

To a degree it is of course subjective. If it was a foul then it was a penalty but at least give the referee a chance to review it.

For decisions that result in a goal, chalking off of a goal or potentially a goal (penalty) then it should be compulsory for the referee to review it on the monitor. This would also negate any pressure a referee may feel from his peers, in the VAR team when asked to review, to rescind his original decision.

The penalty definitely feels like a decision which referees in the past may have looked at and given the freekick right on the edge. Not just because they weren't sure if the foot was on the line but because they also felt it was a weak penalty so the freekick is the safe option.

Honestly I think the old fashioned subjective mental maths the referees would perform to make decisions and even things out when bad decisions were made is better than what we currently have.

They're seemingly video reviewing decisions with blinkers on and it doesn't work

This whole "clear and obvious" thing is where the trouble starts. It wasn't clear and obvious that it was a free kick and it wasn't clear and obvious that the tackle was inside the box (in real time).

Yet, VAR is not allowed to check on the awarding of the free kick because it wasn't "clear and obvious" but allowed to turn it into a penalty.

Is the reason for clear and obvious to not undermine referees or an attempt to prevent spending too much time reviewing?

Moaning about the ref ought to be left unchanged by VAR, if it was used properly (soz for sounding like a broken record), because the borderline decisions should be left to the ref's judgement, hence leaving him open to criticism as well as praise. What should be removed by VAR are the absolute howlers that don't so much make fans want to moan about an official as chase him down the road threatening to hit him! This whole use of VAR, it's like the bloke who invented the DVD trying to jam it into a VCR. It's nonsensical.

As for the game, I thought we were fairly okay, like the previous game. I don't know why most of the match reports have been quite negative. In the circumstances I was pleasantly surprised. Jota looks a good signing, but he's still mostly aiming for the same spaces as the front three, so if they persist with that tactical strategy, which certainly is appealing in theory, they really need to work on the personnel. If Gomez can stay fit this could be the making of him, he looks like he's relishing the responsibility. I fear the more Fabino relaxes into the CB position the less reliable he's going to be, because of concentration and positional issues, but he's done a decent job so far. The main concern, short term, is that we up the pace - we really do need to keep up the speed of play.

Good point re gomez ... certainly seems up for it!

Excellent summary as per and I particularly agree with the point about Gomez. He's reacted similarly in the past to being one of the senior members of a matchday XI made up largely of youngsters. With a bit of luck one or two of his more strident critics on here are going to be called upon to eat their words.

It could've been just me, but the pitch seemed slow yesterday. I'm quite surprised given that it had been raining, and I know how Klopp likes the ball to fizz around to make it conducive to our style of play....maybe it's just me though as I haven't seen anyone mention it yet.

I do recall something being mentioned about it in relation to Manes ball across to Salah which the defender reached. It wasn't necessarily a bad ball just it didn't reach Salah because of the pitch/ rain / whatever reason.

This is Gomez' moment to shine. He's into his sixth season at Liverpool now. He's still very young by age but has plenty of games and experience behind him.

He can step out of the shadow of Van Dijk and elevate his game to another level. I think playing left side might actually help him - him and Trent were starting to get caught out on the right hand side a bit too often.

Agreed. Interestingly he also looked better at LB the few times he played there early on than he's ever looked at RB since (Carra did too in his fullback days). It does seem to matter to some players, though not to all.
