Smith is clearly a great athlete but rarely seemed to be in control of the ball when running with it.

Yeah I think the same about him. Not sure he's got the technical ability to make it with us. Plus he's only a couple of years younger than some of the left backs we're expected to go after this summer. Could be that he's missed his very brief chance.

@neiljonesecho: Brendan Rodgers spoke glowingly about Jordon Ibe after the game here. Said he can go on to be an "outstanding" player at #LFC.

@neiljonesecho: Rodgers on Ibe: “He's got running power, pace, and he has a lovely touch on the ball. He just needs to work on his finishing!" #LFC

Brill news. Am a massive Ibe fan and I hope next season he can have a role to play for us. He arguably should have had the game time Moses got, but his loan move seems to have done him wel.l.

The young players who stood out today and made the opposition look like Sunday league footballers are the ones we should be keeping an extra eye on.

I was working so I couldn't watch the entire game, but I noticed that Ibe did well. Not sure about the rest.

Just back fom the match, Ibe the pick of the bunch, especially from the more central area in 2nd half. Bit of o piss-take to play just two first teamers (both taken off at ht) while three others were introduced in their tracksuits at ht!
My lad had a great time though and that was the whole point of the excercise....

I didn't catch it either... if you find a link I'd love to watch it if you post it on here for us.

@ViktorFagerLFC: Rodgers on Ibe: "He's such a talent. It was interesting, I asked him to do something different here."

@ViktorFagerLFC: Rodgers on Ibe: "I played him on the side in the first half, but we switched to a diamond in the second half. I wanted to see him."

@ViktorFagerLFC: Rodgers on Ibe: "Similar to what I have done with Sterling. I wanted to improve his football intelligence, play him in a different position"

@ViktorFagerLFC: Rodgers on Ibe: "He played at the top of the diamond and he was excellent."

@ViktorFagerLFC: Rodgers: "Age is no barrier; if they're good enough they're old enough. But they have to have personality."

This is becoming a Rodgers trademark – playing nominal wingers at the tip of the "diamond." Didn't work with Moses, worked with Sterling and by the sounds of it, a promising first try with Ibe.

Who was number 50? I thought he was excellent but wasn't sure who it was?

A couple of years could make a huge difference though - it all depends on his attitude and the coaching he gets. I believe he has the "character" Rodgers likes - first game back after his ACL tear, he scores with a scorcher from distance after working out room for himself, and that's right after he beat his man to set up a teammate with a neat low cross.

He's got the raw tools to work with - bags of pace, good strength, and a brilliant crossing/shooting left foot - and that's always a good start. I think he'll do well with a loan to a Championship club - he's 20 this year and a season out to a proper club will do him a lot of good. Coady looked a different player on his return, for example.

Fantastic talent. He seems to be another Sterling, seriously need to improve on his shooting skills though.

Sterling's finishing was also very unsure when he just broke into the first team. Ibe looks a fantastic prospect, very excited to see him develop with us next season.

Like Sterling last season, the most important thing for Ibe is to work on his reading of the game and his decision-making. Finishing will come with shooting practices and confidence when he scores a few, again like in Sterling's case.

For where he'll be expected to play (out wide and maybe central behind the strikers), the ability to read the game and spot where the gaps and movements are, and to pick the right options after that, is, I think, the facet of the game he'll need to improve on and get consistently solid at.

I think some of us were saying that fresh out of the U-21s, he already seemed to be ahead of Sterling in this aspect. Now that Sterling has raised the bar, it'll be interesting to see if Ibe can raise his game to catch up.

Just so we don't forget a couple of other youngsters on show yesterday:

McLaughlin:
I thought he had a quiet game by his standards. I don't think he really got involved that much up front, and save for one incident when his man got past him too easily, didn't do much wrong defensively either.

This last season has seen his progress disrupted by injuries, and he's now seen Wisdom (last season) and Flanagan (this season) - albeit both a year older - get regular first team action while he's still playing at the U-21 level or going out on loan. There's fresh competition now from Connor Randall, who is a year younger than him and who has had a good season with the U-18s and U-21s. He might need to go out on a good full season's loan to improve his chances; needs to stay fit.

Dunn:
His finishing yesterday was sweetly-struck. I've watched Dunn since he was in the U18s where he played in various positions (CM, wide mid, 2nd striker), before moving up to the U21s and being played wide and then up front as the lead striker (with Yesil out again, Bijev pretty meh, Ngoo on loan, Morgan released - we really have no strikers left).

Always liked what I've seen - strong, good attitude and industry, and he knows where the goal is. He has a booming left foot shot and isn't afraid to take a pop when he sees an opening. His contract expires in June and I hope we give him a new contract and send him out on loan, because he really needs to be given an opportunity to see if he can step up to the next level.

Besides, him going out on loan will then free a slot in the U21s for either Sinclair or Wilson to move up from the U18s. Maybe both, if we release Bijev and Ngoo goes on loan again (has 1 year left - played some games on loan to League One club Walsall, scoring a goal in 6 starts and 14 sub appearances in all competitions). That both Bijev and Ngoo didn't travel with the squad for this game probably says something about their future here.

Not wanting to sound deliberately pompous, but the first thing I look for in a young player is just good solid technique and comfort on the ball. I don't think you've got much chance to make it at LFC if you don't have that. For me, that's where Smith struggles, especially since he's meant to be an attacking left back.

And again, things look bleak for him if we sign a top young left back, as expected. When exactly would he get his chance?

Ibe - wonderful. shame about the finishing but it will come with Rodgers at the helm.

Borini - that was a superb finish, reminiscent of one of Suarez's this season (forget which match).

No worries; I know what you're getting at. I just don't see him being as wanting technically. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how it works out for him. I do love his bags of pace and his crossing/shooting though; hopefully he'll get a half season to train with the first team and play with the U21s, and then go out for a half season's loan to see how he fares.

This. I'm still convinced he'll make it. His progress prior to the ACL was phenomenal - it's not surprising he's struggled this year since back. Next season is huge for him.
