Former Liverpool midfielder and fan favourite Xabi Alonso has hailed the unforgettable aura and enchantment of Anfield.

The 32-year-old, who is expected to play a leading role for Spain at the World Cup, was reflecting on his five-year spell with the Reds and representing the club in a special stadium.

It was the scene of some superb moments from Alonso, not least his 70-yard stunner against Newcastle United in September 2006.

"Anfield makes a huge impression on you, it motivates you," he told Canal
+.
"It's a place with a lot of charm and for me, it's one of the temples of football - there aren't many but Anfield is one of them.

"It's a no-frills stadium but it's got a lot of soul."

"No frills"?? NO FRILLS???? Has he not seen our beloved Mighty Red entertaining the kiddies? The face painting fun area? The Chippy Bar?? The best bouncy castle this side of Morecambe's Happy Mount Park?? The culinary marvel that is the Boot Room??? This is the flipping Theatre of Frills!!!
