Profile: Everton midfielder Ross Barkley - the next Gerrard
ITV Football Editor Ollie Irish profiles Everton's midfield sensation Ross Barkley, who has been compared favourably to fellow Liverpudlians Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney.
After a too-quiet summer transfer window at Goodison Park, frustrated Everton fans have every reason to wonder if their club is standing still while their rivals move forward. A home defeat by newly promoted QPR on Saturday won't have allayed such anxiety.
The one very bright spot for Everton after their now-traditional sluggish start was the exciting performance of 17-year-old midfielder Ross Barkley, who started ahead of the likes of senior team-mates including Mikel Arteta (who is only just fit again, admittedly) and Marouane Fellaini.
Playing out of position on the left wing (his best position is probably in the heart of midfield), Barkley stood out a mile with his dynamic, confident play, which highlighted his excellent technique and an obviously intelligent football brain - you can see why he has been compared to Steven Gerrard. Cutting in from the left flank with menace, he had more shots on goal than any of his team-mates and was rightly voted Man of the Match even though he was on the losing side.
Some Everton fan forums even went as far as to wonder if Barkley's performance against QPR was the best debut by an Everton player since 16-year-old Wayne Rooney stunned English football in 2002 with a wonder strike against Arsenal (though Rooney's proper debut came earlier that season, as a sub against Tottenham).
Praise galore
Barkley, who has been on Everton's books since the age of 11, would have made his first-team debut last season, according to Moyes himself, but for a multiple leg fracture suffered while playing for England's U-19s against Belgium last October. His road to recovery has been relatively smooth, happily, and after a good pre-season, Moyes had no worries about throwing Barkley into Everton's Premier League opener from the start. His confidence in the teenager was fully justified.
His Everton team-mates have lined up to shower Barkley with praise. Cue Louis Saha: "He's got power, strength, confidence, speed – he's said a few times to me that I'm slower than him. Hopefully he will show that to the Premier League this season.
"I'm enjoying training with him and hopefully I will enjoy playing with him because I think he's got so many talents and he will definitely be a big star if he keeps working hard."
And defender Sylvain Distin is also impressed but slightly more cautious of laying on the hype: "He seems to be an amazing player but the problem is after one or two games people put too much expectation on the young players. I want to give him time. But definitely he's got quality."
After the QPR loss, club captain Phil Neville weighed in too: "Ross was outstanding without going too much overboard... people say bravery is going around kicking and fighting people, but it is taking the ball when you are 1-0 down and showing you can play football and he did that. I think everyone is quietly confident we have got something really special."
For any fan of English football, watching Barkley's progress this season should be a real highlight.
