Rooney

He looks interested, just really poor. It's no surprise, he's never shown any significant portion of his club form internationally with any consistency.

I just don't get the lack of running, chasing and harassing from him, must be injured or something.

I don't think he's fully fit. He's the best player in the world according to the English media, though.

He was injured prior to the tournament, had no real warm up games, and he doesn't look right.

He's not match fit and he shouldn't be playing.

they were all shite though, let's be honest. Lampard had a better game today, but Gerrard and Rooney just didnt turn up, and as for GlenJo, his defending is abysmal, though to be fair, that's the worst England defense I've seen, ever.

None of them played well today, but Magic was having to cover across for two painfully slow CBs half the time. His defending was certainly not abysmal against Slovenia and gets too much stick in the media anyway.

Rooney was burnt out by the end of the domestic season. Hopefully the next 5 weeks wont be a long enough break for him.

He simply hardly ever turns up in big games at international level or in Europe.

For that reason he's not in the world top 5 for me. If he wasn't fit in South Africa it's yet another reason Capello has got it horribly wrong. We'd simply have been better off playing a fit player in his place.

For better of worse it has delivered an awful blow to his reputation.
I think thats true of almost every player we have.
James - Reputation undamaged
Cole - Reputation enhanced
Terry - Reputation in tatters
Rio - Reputation undamaged
Johnson - Reputation damaged
Lampard - Reputation damaged
Gerrard - Reputation damaged
Lennon - Reputation damaged
Barry - Reputation damaged
Rooney - Reputation damaged
Defoe - Reputation undamaged.

It's hard to judge anyone in an England shirt because nobody bar one or two players tends to play as well as we know they can on even a semi-regular basis.

In some cases, it's clear that limitations are being exposed but what England managers fail badly at is masking those limitations by trying to get the best out of those with the capability to do so.

The 'golden generation' have always been well over-hyped, but it's hard to argue they've ever really played to their potential and that's a crying shame. I don't agree that they're a bunch of naive kick and rush merchants who all get exposed at this level. We just never got the right combination of manager, players and tactics at the right time.

I honestly think, possibly with a degree of bias, and almost certainly utilising the power of hindsight, that playing Upson instead of Carra was a huge error. There is no way Carra would have given Klose that chance for Germany's opener, none. Apart from the amusing defensive 'salmon dive' Terry has been grim too.
In all four games Brave John Terry has given a suicide cross field pass that has almost resulted in a goal. The kind of pass you would bollock a four year old for making.

Hes a cockhead.

Yes he has played those suicidal passes, the sort that a good defender plays maybe once or twice a season. He's played one or more in every game.

Though yet again we have a manger who trusts other players before Carra. Terry was never going to be dropped for Carra, but Upson was iffy against Slovenia and one tackle seemed to airbrush that performance for everyone. He was sooo out of his depth today it was unbelievable.

He's going to become the most annoying pundit of all time.

that's a good fucking point.

can't stand rooney but its stupid to ignore the way manu's set up where he fills his boots (loan front man, plenty of width) and then expect him to perform, the exact same thing goes for gerrard being asked to perfrom from the left. I place the blame at the feet of the (hopefully soon to depart) manager.

Dreadful World Cup, but I doubt many United fans are that arsed, because he's a fantastic player.

Still, I suppose it gives all of the divs who "never rated him" a bit of scope to resurrect their opinions.

Rooney is world class and that is beyond debate but his talents were criminally wasted during this world cup. To play him up front with Defoe was illogical as they are very unsuited as a partnership. Also, he thrives on width, his phenomenal goalscoring record this season was testament to a wonderful supply-line that United fed him with, predominantly from wide positions. England preferred to play the ball into his feet with his back to goal!
