rafa may be many things but he isn't stupid, he isn't going to sell reira without someone lined and and more than likely the replacement will be better or it's not worth the hassle...

but...

having said that owners have just forked out 60 million from their own pockets for service the refinance deal...

So you admit you're wrong then.

Good.

In all those almost 14,000 posts, I don't think I've never bothered to attempt communication with you, and now I know why. If I wanted to observe willfully obtuse people, I'd turn on the network news and listen to the healthcare "debate".

You're very serious Farky, for someone who only exists on the internet. Perhaps you ought to lighten up a bit.

Hmm...I´ve always liked Riera and he gave us the balance last season that we needed. Can´t see we would sell him but on the other hand I can´t understand why Benitez didn´t play him against Spurs. Babel and Benayoun are, as already said, not near good enough so who would we bring in? There are not many very good left wingers out there who could provide what Riera did last season, are there? Hope these reports are nonsense.

there aren't many left wingers who can score 4 goals in all competitions?

Good point. Why not play Torres as an all out attacking left midfielder.

I don't think he was Vlad, think it's too many people on here going all cloak and dagger and doing a bit of 2+2=42

Rafa would not compromise the team just because a player was on his way out, if he's on his way out. He knew Xabi was going all summer but that didn't stop him playing him.

Clearly if Rafa's been told he's only got £1.5million, he won't be selling as the Riera fee plus £1.5million isn't gonna be enough for Silva.

If he's fit and doesnt play against Stoke, then theres a move on the cards. And that is a horrible desicion and yet another blow for us. He gives us much needed balance and has the ability to keep the ball. He's also handy on set pieces because of his height.

I can understand it if he wasnt ready yet, hes been out with injury and Jarques death has got to him a bit.

We need him tomorrow though.

Why does everyone think that if a player will be transfered shortly, or there's a chance of a transfer, then they don't get played?!?! This makes absolutely no sense apart from if it cup ties them, or they are at the club doing the medical.

Mentalists.

the point is shit happens and it's possible a player can play get injured and ruin any chance of a transfer.

1.5 million plus 12 for riera plus 4 for doseena plus maybe 3 for voronin gives us around 20 million. still not enough for silva.

i wouldn't sell riera just to spite the owners.

But if Rafa has a choice of compromising a result of an important game, just incase a player gets transfered maybe after a rumour from the press, or playing him - I wonder what he'll choose.

If he rested a player after every press rumour of a transfer - we wouldn't have a starting 11.

Or maybe he WANTS to sell him in order to fund another transfer.

all I can say is riera stock has certainly risen on this board if people think he would have made the difference to the result last sunday.

yea i can see it now. he'll sell riera for centre back cover.

neil, of course riera would have made a difference, it would have meant babel wasn't on the pitch.

He wanted to sell Alonso, didn't stop him playing did it?

Just because a player might be offski, and I mean MIGHT, it doesn't stop him playing for us. What about if player 'x' does get transfered, but the deal takes a month to complete? -We don't play him for a month?

Rediculous.

well for starters i thought johnson had a strong debut, insua was fine as was masch. yossi was good, i never rated lucas and yes gerrard, torres and kuyt were not having the best of days. i know its been done to death but imo 3 of our front 4 didn't perform because of lucas not being able to spread the ball at all. babel simply didn't perform as he's shit.

i was never a riera fan when he joined but he is a clear improvement over a ever declining babel

it all helps but I still think with him we'd have struggled to beat spurs.
I don't understand the grief over losing riera if he is replaced by better, I already think yossi is a better player than him and riera is ahead of him in the pecking order.

I think the problem is, however short Riera is of being the perfect solution on the left he IS the best solution on the left at present.

We get rid and we're still in a position of having one (hopefully) quality player and not much in reserve.

A versatile forward and a versatile defender could be the difference for us this year and if the cunts from above don't act on it, I doubt we'll ever see their faces this side of the Atlantic again.

The last thing we need to be doing is breaking up a team that found consistency and cohesion last season.

IF Reira goes, then I guess Benayoun will have to be the cover for the left and right sides.

the truth is down the years with owners that have come and gone from other clubs we could have done a lot worse than the yanks but we also could have done a lot better given our standing in world football.

I take encouragement from the speculation over Riera being sold, surely to God Rafa wouldnt even be considering it unless we were going to buy in a good quality replacement. Maybe this 1.5M story is just guff and he just needs a few more quid for a top player.

surely he wouldnt sell an attacker for no good reason?

Well me Ross, Vlad and a few others have always said that credit where's it's due, we never had the opportunity to sign players for the fees we've signed Torres, Keane, Masher and Johnson for, before the Yanks arrived.

The question was always going to be about whether, when it came to the crunch, they would back us when in a position of strength on the pitch, even if it meant dipping into their own money because of financial restraints at business level.

This Summer so far suggests that's not going to happen, and if that's the case then they're not the right owners for us, given much of what's been spent so far has been via loans.

I've got no quarms about Rafa being the right man for the job, the progress we made last season was staggering and despite stubborness and some transfer mistakes there's no one better out there and I want the club itself to maintain continuity. But if the American's aren't working in line with that and have their business heads on permanently without showing any sort of affinity with the club or a longing to see us reach our ultimate goal of the title, then they should just go.

* I do wonder though, if the mud does start to get thrown via the press again, whether G&H will use last years transfer dealings as some sort of reason for being hesitant this Summer...
