Riera to be sold?

Status
Not open for further replies.
There is no guarantee that money from any proposed Riera sale will be given to Rafa. Rafa has brought more money in than has gone out, also keeping in mind we 'should' have the Keane money which was from last years transfer budget as well the fact that a large chunk of the Johnson fee came from the money owed to us for Crouch.

Why are we struggling to find the money to get a defender in? I dont buy the 'Rafa is faining poverty' to keep the price of any respective transfers down.

Tony Barrett said on LFC Tv that Rafa had a budget of 15M this summer + any money brought in. Something doesnt add up but Im sure the final result in the equation has something to do with the 60M Hicks and Gillett have been asked to pay back as part of the new re-financing package.

I dont think there will be any top class signings

I like riera. If he has to go then it had better be for a profit.

We're already woefully exposed up front SG, we can't afford to let Reira go and rely on Babel (shite) and Yossi (not a left sided player) for a whole season.

Erm, back up holmes; it was hardly one man, in fact I think the forum majority were probably pleased with his signing.

He was average at best for most of last season. I would prefer to keep him as a squad player, but if there's a choice to be made between keeping Riera and signing someone ace for the same position, I'll go with option 2.

Hamaan, I find it impossible to believe that Rafa would acquiesce to yet another sale without the guarantee that he could spend the money on a replacement. He'd be squawking to the media about broken promises if that were the case.

It's usually about at this stage someone reminds us he's 'slow'. (Oh, it's me this time! And I like him. :'()

No they weren't. The general reaction was dismay, disappointment and disillusion.

Honestly, what is going on here? Riera was a great addition last year, one of the reasons we challenged, and there was room for improvement too.

By the time we make a team out of these changes, after the likelihood that at least one replacement doesn't really work out, the spine we have now is past it's prime.

Don't exchange known goods for unknown ones. We can't think of a worse LM to sell so that we improve our squad and our first team? Of course we can, we just apparently can't afford significant investment in the team.

[/quote]Good man Macca.

This summer gets better (from the Echo):

Diakhate To Cost Liverpool £7million?

Liverpool “must stump up £7million†to land Pape Diakhate from Ukrainian outfit Dynamo Kiev.

It is claimed that Kiev have given the Premier League club a quote of £7million for Senegalese International Diakhate to leave for Anfield.

It said the central-defender caught Reds manager Rafa Benitez’s eye whle playing for Senegal in the summer, with the Spaniard apparently keen to bring in another defender to the Merseyside club following a string of injuries.

I love them Senagalese Liverpool players.

The Mirror also says Rafa has got his begging bowl to the Yanks for some unknown Spanish defender for £10m.

I'm a bit meh with Riera.

He's a good player but never goes past 60 mins and is not consistent enough.

Selling and bringing in another top striker wouldn't be the worst. We still have Babel and Yossi for the left wing.

Babel and Yossi are useless on the left wing. Neither are natural wingers.

Riera on the other hand is a left winger. He isn't fantastic, but he's quite good, and he is an ACTUAL winger. He was instrumental in bringing us a balance that paid off last year. More than the sum of their parts sort of signing. If we play with Babel and Yossi, you will be complaining about the lack of width.

Also, he plays much better with the LB than does Babel, because he's willing to track back. Insua was never overlapping because Babel's movement is poor, and he is a pushover that doesn't fancy a tackle or work.

Selling Riera would be stupid, especially for a striker.

This idea that someone who can play AM can play on either side as anything but a replacement is getting old.

Spot on Fark.

Damn straight.

Selling Riera makes sense only if we're getting another winger.

If we want strikers we should sell our dross strikers.

Whats happened with the Voronin to Hertha Berlin story?

And? Babel and Benayoun can't (very well). Why don't you actually attempt to understand the context of a remark that is being made. Your reading comprehension in this and the other thread (re: Carra) is absolutely embarrassing.

The story gathers momentum:

Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid are monitoring Liverpool winger Albert Riera after he was dropped for the Reds’ opening weekend defeat at Spurs.

The Spain left-sider was left perplexed and annoyed by Rafa Benitez’ decision to leave him out of the squad when he wanted to open the new campaign with a bang.

Liverpool’s pre-match suggestion that Riera was not fit was news to the 27-year-old former Espanyol man, who could not understand why he had been left out to accommodate Ryan Babel in the starting line-up.

Babel’s anonymous display only reinforced that view and has alerted Spain’s big two as well as Atletico Madrid, seeking to bolster their squad for the Champions League campaign.

Riera’s admission on international duty last week, that “I would like to come back to Spain at some point†was noted by all three clubs after the player went to see Benitez to try to discover his anticipated role in the Liverpool side.

The Spanish sides have been made aware that Riera, who cost £8million on deadline day last term and scored five goals in 40 appearances for the Anfield outfit, could be available before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

Riera believes he should be a regular starter, rather than just part of Benitez’s rotation policy, especially in World Cup year when he is looking to cement his place in Vicente Del Bosque’s squad for South Africa.

And if Liverpool are willing to listen to offers, the winger may be willing to leave English football for a second time after his six months on loan at Manchester City was not extended in 2006.

Riera is a regular starter, and after watching that last game, I doubt he's shitting himself about Babel taking his place.

I also don't see any evidence that he's pushing for a move, if we are selling him to get someone, its because he's a salable asset, and we aren't being allowed to spend money without selling.

My comment was a reply, to someone else, saying we'd be fine if we bought a striker, as we could use Yossi/Babel out left. I'd attach it as a quote here, but evidently that would mean that you wouldn't read it.
