Ravel Morrison

Ravel Morrison may have started a new chapter of his career at West Ham United but the teenage midfielder, whose career has been synonymous with off-field controversy, has landed himself in fresh bother after posting an alleged homophobic threat on Twitter.

The 19-year-old, who left Manchester United for Upton Park on the final day of the January transfer window, has been asked by the Football Association to explain himself after he was provoked on the social networking site to hit out in the strongest terms.

His message will not win any punctuation prizes but it conveyed plenty of menace and has given him his place in the pantheon of players to have sparked Twitter storms. "Crack head?" he wrote. "Go suck out u little faggot your a guy that talks if u see me you try slap me I'm in manchester every week." The tweet was later deleted.

Big Sam's reaction to this via his column:

Ravel Morrison was in the headlines this week following a Twitter message. My response is that, like everything else, the club will deal with things internally.

We've had an eye on Twitter this season but mostly the concern is divulging anything about the football club.

This time the problem seems to have been about one certain word and we'll have a chat with him about it.

We're more concerned at the moment with finding the right place for Ravel and his girlfriend to live following his move from Manchester United, for him to be part of the first-team squad and for him to grasp that opportunity.

We will help him structure his life around what he wants to do and help him find out if he is good enough to be in that senior squad.

The challenge for Ravel is to be ready to step into that first team when called upon.

There is more attention around a young man who has hardly played in anyone's first team, compared to our other new boys, Nicky Maynard and Ricardo Vaz Te, which I struggle to understand.

Ravel's a young lad trying to make his way and all he needs to do is learn his lessons as he progresses. In football you have to learn those lessons quickly and if he does that, the talent will come out.
