Solid is 6/10 in my book.
I couldn't get a working stream for the second half so I can't rate everyones performances.
Looking forward to seeing Torres' winner.

Reina - 6. Stood up well in the first minutes, good save in the 2nd half, fluffed the corner badly. Reasonable.

Johnson - 7. Strong going forward, and his defending was ok early, improving to very good on Hines for the last 30 minutes.
Skrytl - 5. Scares me too often for my liking. Stop lunging!
Carra - 4. Incredibly bad in the first hal, settled down to solid in the 2nd.
Insua - 6. Eager and determined, but his final cross is too often poor.

Yossi - 6. Didn't quite come off for him today, eh? Would have been goal of the decade though...
Gerrard - 6. By his own standards, quite annonymous for long spells. Seemed to become very agrivated with his teammates when things didn't work out (Bable in particular), and didn't bother getting back too often.
Mascher - 7. Solid as ever for the most part and seemed to be trying to contribute more going forward than in the past.
Lucas - 6. Solid, got stuck in well, tried hard. Nothing spectacular, nothing ridiculous either.

Dirk - 6. Like Yossi, nothing quite came off for him today.
'Nando - 9. Looks like he cares again, doesn't he? Nippy, creative, confident... I thought he looked more interested on Wednesday, and today confirmed it. First goal was very similar to his first goal ever for us - Just blew past somebody and buried it from a position that few could make dangerous. And that winner was a far better goal than it initially looked... Perfect placement, jumping between two defenders. The boy's a genius.

Babel - 6. Looked interested, which, for him, is a start. And looked a little incisive too. Nice move and cross for the winner.
Aureilo - Just glad he's back. A nice option to have when he's fit.
Riera - did he touch it?

Insua won and played the ball for Torres to score

He comfortably deserves a 7 today

I think he was solid and did well today, Squiggles, but let's not pretend he split the defense or anything... he picked up a stray ball and gave to Torres 35 yards out.

I could be talked into a 7, but not for that bit alone.

Insua frustrated me today. In the first half he made a very brave move and darted from his position towards the middle of the park because he spotted a rake of space. Mascher found him and he drove towards the box and hit his shot wide, that was brave.

He made plenty of good decisions with his movement and stood out for a pass but the drawback was his use of the ball, it was very bad and poor at times 🙁 I can see why some could give him different ratings and in general I cant disagree with either, but because it was an away game and he is still young, I'll give him the higher rating of 7.

Lucas 6
Gerrard 7
Kuyt 6
Yossi 6
Torres 9

Babel 6.5

I'm kinda looking forward to Aurelio getting back in the side. Insua has done well to come into the first team and give us a dependable solid option, but there are occasions where you wish for that extra bit of quality on the ball, which right now (to my surprise) he doesn't quite offer us.

Insua did better than a 6.

He was solid all day.
agreed. he assisted in our first goal by intercepting west ham's movement. good show and he was in the middle of the park very often for this game too!

Lucas was pretty rubbish for most the game, giving away the ball and completely failing twice at tackling the opposition player. Don't know how people are giving him a 6.

If anyone gives Lucas over a six they are a twat, he was an absolute passanger today, people on this site slate Mascherano, oh he cant pass...... he sprayed balls today alonso fans would cream over. Masch was excellent played a blinder. Obviously Torres is MOTM for two nice goals. Loved the fact that Babel put egg on the face of everyone in the pub I was in, got slated from the second he came on even if the situation on the pitch wasnt his fault, and gave a great assist to effectively win us the game. Rafa two things sort your defence out and never play Babel on the left again!

I wish Rafa would give the below two midfield grouping a go. Lucas had his fair share of games, and he has mostly come up short. Riera and Babel should also get a similar chance.

Gerrard, Torres, Masher, Yossi, Kuyt, and Riera

Well to be fair, he anticipated and intercepted the pass (it didn't just arrive on his toe), and then as you say played a fairly simple ball. But he did make a few cracking runs today from FB position into the heart of their defence. I thought he was good.

I realised through the first half that I didnt notice him too much so decided to pay very careful attention to that area of the pitch to see what he was doing.

He didnt make rash tackles, took up some decent positons and got ahead of the ball the odd time going forward (he won the corner for Kuyt's goal) and his passing was unspectacular but economical - more Hamann than Alonso.

I thought he did very well overall. Gave him No,2 in the MotM thread.

True. I found Insua going forward and at the central of their defense quite often. Are we beginning to play total football?

It was going in anyway.
Not sure, I thought it was heading for the post at best.

But I was watching it absolutely wankered, so my memory could be hazy.

Most commentators though it was going in - personally I thought it would have either sneaked in or gone in off.

True. He hit a ball that was going in anyway from 3 feet out.

He must have had a blinder then... 10.

Mostly come up short !!! He most certainly has not mostly come up short. He has been a reliable if unspectacular CM since the season started. Today was a little short of what he has been producing but overall I'd give him a 7 for his season so far..

A good DM is one where not many people notice when they are doing their job well. Just like Makele, no one noticed him in Real Madrid until he left for Chelsea and suddenly Real Madrid noticed how much he is missed and began to lose their dominance of their hold on the title.

Do you think Essien is a good DM?

Yes Essien is a good DM.

His goals contribution is not that great either. He does occasionally scores admittedly but so did Lucas and Lucas is much younger.
