I've always said I'm not a fan of sacking a manager mid-season, but in knee-jerk moments after bad results this season I've wanted him gone there and then.

The last 24hours confirmed that I thought was the right thing; I don't want him gone mid-season, not really. It would leave a sour taste in my mouth, I don't want him to walk out and nor do I want us to sack him, neither would paint the club in a great light.

Instead this Juve situation is the perfect answer, as far as I'm concerned he *has* to go at the end of the season, no matter where he finishes (unless he wins the league of course). I hate that for some his reign has already been overshadowed. I desperately want to be able to remember for him for the great memories and some of the wonderful players he's brought to us. If he stays beyond the summer, that's less and less likely to happen. I don't wish any ill upon him, infact I want him to do well after he leaves us and nor do I want for us to be in a snookered situation where we can't afford to sack him.

Beyond the hysteria, polarised arguments to make our points, frustration and heartache of this season *knowing* that he'll leave to go to Juve at the end of the season is the best outcome any of us could have hoped for.

Just returning to the title of this thread, Juventus have just announced that Zaccheroni has been appointed as the new manager.

Some say that this is just a holding move, with Rafa to follow in the summer.

Alberto Zaccheroni Joins Juventus

Juventus have appointed Alberto Zaccheroni until June 2010, the club said on it's official website.

Zaccheroni has replaced Ciro Ferrara who was informed of the club's decision on Friday afternoon. The former Milan, Inter and Udinese coach will take charge until the end of the season. He is expected to help the club climb up from their slide and ensure they finish in the top four.

A statement on the club's official website reads:

"Zaccheroni is the new Juventus coach.

"From today Juventus have a new coach: Alberto Zaccheroni. Across a statement, the Bianconeri have announced to have relieved Ciro Ferrara from his duties and to have name the Romagnolo tactician who has signed a contract until June 2010.

"Zaccheroni will take the team's training session at Vinovo from 15:00CET. At 17:00CET he will presented officially to the press."

A poor run of results along with elimination from the Coppa Italia, Champions League and Scudetto race have seen the axe fall on Ferrara.

Zaccheroni is at Vinovo, the club's training headquarters. He arrived with directors Roberto Bettega, and Alessio Secco. Ferrara is also at the training ground.

Considering that he's only signed until June, i wouldn't be surprised if that was indeed the case.

At least they are spared the blushes of going out of the league cup early!!!

Could go either way, who knows. He could be very successful and get the players on board and then be eligible for a prolonged contract.

Possibly Squiggs, but it does seem that they want a bigger name to be in charge come the start of the season.

If Rafa is going to leave, i'm glad that some top clubs are showing an interest. It would solve the contract issue for us and i'd be happy that he's walked into another tasty job.

Under certain circumstance I might agree Anita, but given there is not really a lot left to salvage for this season it would do no harm.
If a new mananger came in now, it would give him time to look at the current squad and spend time with them and form qualified opinions. It would also give him a full transfer window to bring players in, and time to tap up the players he wanted. It would also give him time to work with the owners and Purslow over funds etc.
Now is a good time

He wouldn't have a full window now Vlad, we're at the end of the month, so a new manager coming in would be stuck with the same players anyway. Maybe I'm being overly sentimental about 'The Liverpool Way' an' all, but I don't want him walking out on us, or us sacking him, either says the wrong thing about us as a club.

Give me some credit, I wasn't talking about this transfer window Anita, all bleeding three days of it, I was talking about the summer, and his time to prepare for it.
Knowing the way we progress on doing business we will still be negotiating with somone for some reason in August when all the players have gone

The thing is what will Rafa do with the squad he has for the remainder of the season, and what would a new manager do with the same squad.

I kinda know the answer to the first bit.

I agree regarding the contract. But I couldn't care less what Benitez does or doesn't do at another club once he leaves us (unless signing Lucas is one of the things he DOES do)

Having said that I probably wouldn't want to be drawn against a Benitez team in Europe

If Rafa to Juve is a done deal I'd assume Purslow has already sounded out our target replacement (I'm convinced it'll be Hiddink). Although he won't be physically at Anfield I'm sure our potential manager is already planning for the summer.

I'm always sad when managers go because I've always been totally convinced that all of our managers have only wanted to do what is best for the club, so its a real shame for them as well as for the fans when it doesn't work out.

Yeah, despite being slightly relieved, I was still gutted when Houllier went, and that was much more prolonged than this.

However I did like Houllier (the man) much more. I know he will be, but it's hard to imagine Benitez being upset at leaving.

Yeah I was gutted for Houllier the man when he left. I want all our managers to succeed, obvs, and I really felt he wanted to, too.

I feel the same for Benitez. He really wants to succeed here, and may even be trying too hard. But it's a necessary move really. We need change. The Juve link could work out best for all parties.

I disagree with that Squiggles. I do believe Benitez loves the club, the fans and city. As do his family from all reports. So I would imagine he would be upset. He's just not doing a very good job at the moment.

I agree Sunny, like Houllier before him , he threw himself into the city, and like Houllier his wife and family took to it.
Although Houllier did go the step further and insist that he lived in the Liverpool boundaries and encouraged his players to as well

See rafa is flattered by the Juve intrested, please please go. Fingers crossed this happens in the summer. Then hopefully Mourinho will be avaliable. Hopefully he walks doesn't get the compo and we receive money from Juve. Is this Benitez playing his politics game with the owners he normally plays every 6 months?

Liverpool's Rafael Benítez admits to Juventus interest

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/jan/29/rafael-benite-admits-juventus-interest

Rafael Benítez has admitted to being aware of Juventus's interest in appointing him as manager and says he is proud to be targeted by the Turin giants. "I know they [Juventus] were interested, that is part of the game now in football," said the Liverpool manager.

Juventus today dismissed Ciro Ferrara and appointed the former Milan coach Alberto Zaccheroni until the end of the season, at which point the Bianconeri are likely to turn their attentions back to Benítez. Reports in Italy this week suggested that a Juve delegation had flown to Merseyside in an attempt to convince the Spaniard to leave Anfield in the summer.

Despite the speculation over his future, Benítez insists that he remains focussed on tomorrow's home game against Owen Coyle's Bolton.

"I am not here to talk about speculation because people talk too much," he said. "I am focused on preparing my team for the game against Bolton.

"I know they [Juventus] were interested, that is part of the game now in football, but I am not ready to talk too much because I don't want to lose my focus. When you are a manager and you have clubs asking, you have to be proud because they are a top side in Europe but I am really happy here and want to do my job as best I can."
