I've no idea.

Maybe he's the sort that bottles it up and then just goes mental.

The way you talk he inherited Blackpool not Liverpool, and he has been operating on a shoestring.
We finished ahead of United in 2004 and have outspent them since then
We finished ahead of Arsenal in 2006 and 2008 and have massively outspent them since
We finished ahead of Chelsea last year and have spent exactly the same as them in the past 4 years, so what exactly is it that makes you both think we were always behind them and havnt spent the money to catch them up.
Those three teams are now miles out of sight of us despite the fact that we have been better than them at times in the past 5 years and despite spending heavily and despite having a supposed tactical genius in charge, we are now being passed by City which is fine, they are spending very heavily, but they were almost a relegation team when the money came in, we were top 3 and winning honours.

One day all the divs will realise Oncy. Benitez is overrated.

This is what he's won since taking over at Valencia 9 years ago:

2x La Liga titles
1 Uefa Cup
1 Uefa Super Cup
1 FA Cup
1 Champions League trophy
1 FA Community Shield
2x Uefa manager of the year awards

Oh, and two of the biggest teams in Europe would love to have his services.

Well personally i think he's a very good manager. Only a "div" would disagree with this Rosco.

I'm sorry I'm not sure what you're getting at. Is it if I disagree that he's had some success I'm a div or is it if I disagree that he's a very good manager I'm a div ?

That's football though, isn't it? When a manager fails at one club, there is often a queue of other clubs wanting to sign him up.

I was right. From an interview in the Independent in 2005...

It was Benitez's last day and it finished with a press conference at which he broke down in tears - the end of an acrimonious power struggle within the hierarchy of the then Spanish champions.

I wouldn't be at all suprised if he wept on leaving us. I'll probably weep too (I did with Houllier), remembering Istanbul and how high all our hopes were.

Oh well...

I remember reading somewhere that he'd actually "celebrate if we won the league rather than just look at his watch.

It would have been nice to find out.

One of the reasons he will get another job very easily is because he has been quite clever off the field virtually all the time he's been here.
Whether it was the case or not he has been very vocal at times about any problems with the management and money, so much so that when he eventually does go there are many who will consider that he was dealing with an impossible task.
I don't know what went on at Valencia but its pretty much accepted as fact now that it was the owners who were at fault.
Don't be in any doubt that Benitez can be very shrewd when dealing with his own interests and dealing with the media.

Ha, remember that little hand slap and spin he did when Agger scored in the second leg of the Champions' League semi against Chelsea ?

I thought that was sooooo cool.

All of those trophies & awards were won in the first 5 years of those 9 you highlight, Rafa.

More interested by the last bit to be honest

Rafa Benitez warned Liverpool that they must deliver on a string of promises if he is not to be lured away by Juventus in the summer.

After previously refusing to acknowledge Juventus wanted him as long-term replacement for the sacked Ciro Ferrara, Benitez dramatically changed his stance ahead of today's home game with Bolton.

'I know they are interested, and you have to be proud when one of the top sides in Europe wants you,' he declared.

Liverpool's hierarchy, and supporters, may well be alarmed at a sudden willingness to discuss a pursuit that began last Monday, when the Juventus board decided Ferrara had to pay the price for growing public unrest at their team's poor form.

They kept news of his fate from him until yesterday but wasted no time putting out feelers for Benitez, in the hope he could somehow be persuaded to jump ship midway through the season season and take over immediately. When it became clear that would not be possible, they appointed Alberto Zaccheroni as interim coach until the end of the season and vowed to try again for Benitez in the summer.

Despite facing uncertainty over his own position after early exits from the Champions League and FA Cup and failure to mount a title challenge in the Barclays Premier League, Benitez appeared to be setting out his terms for remaining at Anfield.

'New investors may be coming in, and there is a possibility of a new stadium. It is important now that we see these things happen. We must see the club progressing.

'We are going in the right direction, but we have to make sure we really move forward now, by lining up players who are good and available and trying to sign them. The key is the stadium and investors.

'There has been a lot of talk (about Juventus), and, yes, I know about their interest. As a manager, you have to be proud when a big club, a top club in Europe, have an interest in you and are watching you.

'Perhaps there has been too much talking, but you cannot stop speculation.'

Asked whether players lined up for summer moves to Liverpool - including Anfield-bound Standard Liege striker Milan Jovanovic - might think again were he to leave, Benitez replied: 'They all know I still have four years left on my contract.'

Benitez said that money has been made available for the final weekend of the transfer window but would not be drawn on whether talks between managing director Christian Purslow and Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn would see striker Kenwyne Jones' arrival at Anfield.

'We are working very hard under the conditions we have at this moment.

'But it is best not to ask me about players like Jones. I am the Liverpool manager, not the Sunderland manager,' he said.

If this is a correct reading of Rafa's comments, it seems a bit risky, even though Rafa likes to do his negotiating with the management by talking to journalists. Somebody may call his bluff.

Give it time, Rafa. Give it time.

Just leave already Rafa.

Why would he want to stay where the owners dislike him, the top players lost faith in him and worse still, the matchgoers only support him cause it's the right thing to do.

I watched a few serie A games recently, and it suits his style a lot better anw.
