Peruvian footballer Yair Jose Clavijo Panta died on Sunday during a football match after suffering a massive cardiopulmonary arrest at the stadium Cuzco, according to Gol TV.

The grievous incident took place on a pleasant Sunday afternoon during a Peruvian Primera División League match between Sporting Cristal and Real Garcilaso at Cusco’s main stadium, Stadium Cuzco, when the reserve footballer for Sporting Cristal suffered a massive heart attack which killed him instantly.

According to well-placed sources, the 18-year old collapsed just five minutes before the close of play. The medical staff present at the stadium immediately rushed to revive Clavijo and even received support from an ambulance present nearby.

However, the ambulance as well as the medical personnel lacked a defibrillator, which was the prime need of the hour. “In the ambulance there was no defibrillator, a prerequisite both parties as first professional book,” said Gustavo Zevallos, manager of Sporting Cristal.

In 2013, FIFA published a note on the training workshop conducted by the Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) in regards to sudden death where it clearly mentions the necessity of a defibrillator and the knowledge of CPR techniques in every stadium.

“FIFA continues to remind the football world the need for a defibrillator in every arena, as it can be crucial in an emergency,” states FIFA.com in the article.

On the other hand, Sporting Cristal confirmed the tragic news through the footballer’s manager, Carlos Benavides.

Muamba was dead for about an hour and they managed to get him back. Goes to show how lucky he was.
