Inspired by something I found while researching "that fucking midfield" post. How many active, non-retired central midfielders can you name who have scored more career goals than Gini Wijnaldum? Gini's number is 113: 56 goals for PSV, 25 for Feyenoord, 11 for Newcastle, 10 for LFC and 11 for the Holland national team.

It's a bit skewed since Wijnaldum was a winger at PSV and Feynoord

Mostly CM or AM, actually. According to transfermarkt, he played around 20-25 games on the left and right respectively, the rest were in the middle.

So we're thinking of someone who had at least a few seasons in the Dutch league? Hmmm. Wes Sneidjer leaps out as someone who's probs got more.

He's almost retired, in Qatar – doesn't count. Of the 3 players I found, only one played in Holland before...

Payet? Late bloomer but maybe. Di Maria? Might have got loads for some crap Argie club. David Silva - pretty sure he's got more. While we're on City - Mahrez? He was in a shit league for ages and scored a few for Leics. Eriksen - probably scored a hundred for Ajax?

Wijnaldum was once called the Dutch Ronaldinho. He was an excellent dribbler who even dabbled in stopovers and elasticos. It's mad he has curtailed (matured) that side of his game. If Keniget was to watch an old video of him back in the day we'd be seeing the famous SIGN SIGN SIGN posts.

1 of the players you mentioned was on my list and another one I've missed. So now it's at least 4 active players who scored more than Wijnaldum.

Ok, ok 🙂 I emphasized "active, non-retired" for a reason – this is not about finding some 50-year old former legend resting on his laurels in the MLS, China or Brazil.

Are you trying to start world war 3?

A couple I've googled who I'm surprised haven't are Iniesta and Willian. Kaka has but he retired last year.

Mkhitaryan?

Shoot, actually yes – I missed him too. Now I really want to move the goalposts and exclude anything from below top-7 leagues or something, but I guess it's too late. 167 career goals for Mkhitaryan, but 71 of those were in Ukraine and Armenia...
