Post Match: Villa Away, unpicking that Shit Show

Like I said, today hurts, but we reason to believe it's an anomaly.

That's where I struggle to be positive - because we've been below that standard since Feb ... we were great for 14 months or so - and since then, good games sandwiched by lucky results etc ... We were lucky to beat Leeds ... Lucky Chelsea wasn't 4-4 before it went 5-3 etc ... I just hope our management is seeing this and the players are aware that we're 'hunted' now ...

Klopp saying Alisson is out for 4-6 weeks.
Think we need to move for a GK tomorrow before the deadline. A new nr 2.
Not one of the defenders have any faith in Adrian.
I used to think he was a decent back up, but this is just to much.

What else is he going to do at this point? We're not going to sign another keeper. We just have to hope and pray that Allison stays fit for the most part.

I'd hit pause on the all or nothing approach we've got going on at the moment because the team just isn't up for it. Villa seemed to have no problem evading our press, our midfield was useless and the backline left to crumble with a nervous breakdown.

It's easy to blame Gomez f0r individual mistakes - yes, he was awful - or whoever but it's the whole team at the moment.

It not just Allison though is it...?
If we lose VVD for two or three games we will struggle Allison or no Allison

I have been voicing my conerns about Gomez for some time, how he seems to use his hand too often against strikers, tries to win balls that he cannot/should not try to win how often he is caught of position, the pointless fouls that he gives away, and most here does not want to seeit...

I understand in away. He is our player we want to see him do well, but it does not mean because we want to see this we should ignore the fualts and pertend that there is nothing amiss.

We need another CB beside Gomez and Matip, a quality CB... I just hope after this performance we are given the money to sign Koulibaly or a CB of that ilk

Jota I thought had a decent game, but unfortunately he is no Mane, still need a quality Striker

Today hurt.

Not least because I sent a torrent of jibes to my United mates after their game.

To be battered like this will only give City and others hope.

I wouldn't be worried as much if I knew Ally was back immediately after the international break.

We'll hopefully have Mane and Hendo back by then. Both are leaders in pressing; Hendo being a vocal leader on the pitch.

We also have Matip to come back (hopefully soon) so when Gomez's head goes, we can bring him back in.

And then there's also Thiago. Another bit of experience we can bring in.

Like I said, today hurts, but we reason to believe it's an anomaly.

Is it an anomaly though? Cos todays defending looked very like when we conceded 3 against Leeds, 5 against City, 3 against Chelsea, Watford etc

Weve largely stopped pressing as a unit and defending as a unit.

The anomaly today was the 3 deflections, that was freakish, but it still leaves the other 4 goals and the host of 1 on 1 chances we gave away to worry about

Crazy, given how badly we've been piped. But I think if Alisson is playing today, we win.

The high-line needs a keeper-sweeper. Not a stay-at-home GK.

And perhaps all those deflected goals don't happen if the defence aren't so worried about blocking every possible shot on goal.

But we walk that tight-rope because of the benefits it gives us up top and pressing teams. Today it we totally fell off the rope.

But I won't over-react (yet). There's work to be done and I expect the boys to do come back pissed.

Get Ally back fit (or another GK).. also get Hendo and Mane back (2 of our best pressers) and we'll be fine.
3 deflected goals - that's insane. Has that ever happened in a PL match before ? One for the record books.

Virgil van Dijk: "It's hard to lose the way we have done. Credit to Villa, they were superb. We weren't 100% at it from start to finish. We have to be very honest with each other."
Can't give the "Like" to VVD so gave it to you instead

Indeed. When you consider the players to come back (Mane, Thiago, Hendo, Ali, Matip) this can indeed be considered an anomaly and hopefully we can get back into our stride quickly.

I also thought both Mo and Jota played well in attack.

Everton is going to be a much tougher game after this though - that shield of invincibility has been utterly obliterated.

Klopp will see it as the perfect game to get the fire going again.

I suspect Nike and the other commercial members of our 'family' will spell it out to FSG even if they can't work it for themselves - a shockingly awful performance like that, watched by millions of dim-witted but deep-pocketed 'consumers' worldwide, can cost the club a hell of a lot more, in the mid- to -long term, than the kind of sums that they've been moaning about this past month. The way we've behaved since we won the title has been like a textbook case in complacency and boneheaded optimism. And now even the most lazy-brained supporters can surely realise that. Klopp has allowed his bosses to push him into this position. Now he needs to fight back, first to shake up his players and second to tell some home truths to our absent owners. Otherwise this season is set to be one long nightmare.

I think it might be lost among all the shit performances, but Keita isn't good enough.

Positives are we will see a much changed team for the derby. Salah scored 2 and Jota had a decent outing of only for 45 minutes.

Let’s move on to prove I’m not an it’s always rosy kind of person. We had nothing from the middle and the back 5 looked like they were picked from Buckley Hill this morning. It was pathetic and we let them play. No closing down, half hearted clearances and no leadership whatsoever. Adrian needed replacing over the summer and now we have 24 hours to get someone else in. Or put some faith in Kelleher. That cluster fuck shouldn’t play for us again. I’ve never been Firmino’s biggest fan, not in a Brendan way, but he needs fucking off too. He’s given nothing for months now. Wijnaldum was a shit house ghost.

Next time out

Anyone but Adrian

Trent
Matip
Van Dijk
Robertson

Thiago
Henderson
Keita

Mané
Salah
Jota

Hi All,

First of all - there is something that @Mystic said in the match thread which needs to be taken into account - there was a lot of luck going Villa's way, and it is not something that can be discounted - so if we account for the 3 major deflections to take their overwhelming luck out of the equation the score is more like a 4-2 win for them. Note I have not discounted Adrian's fuck up.

On the main note - our players are still good, and we need to get back to the way we played early last season, which was to setup defensively and wait for those clear cut chances - build from the back and not this high-line bollox - we are not a exquisite passing side like City, we are just not that, we press and rush the opposition into making mistakes to create clear chances for our front men - while always trying to control the game - that is how we did it last season, and that title wrapped up by February.

Today without doubt the passing, and pressing was completely off - don't know if they thought we could just turn up and not put the effort in, or we could attack at will, but clearly - it ain't the right thing to do. The running and pressing we normally do was NOT in evidence tonight, instead we just thought we could be like City - occupying the the oppositions half at will, what happened tonight is something I always think teams should do to City on a regular basis - if only they could get past their press. Also when you have a tricky customer like Jack Grealish playing for opposition and an ability to thread passes and one of those players that has very good idea of his surroundings then you are asking for trouble.

That said - hope we really wake up now, and treat every opposition team with respect.

Sorry, but when you lose that heavily, you don't mention luck AT ALL. That was an absolute disgrace.
Yes I know that, but they did have luck going their way. It is the unknown quantity in life and it makes a difference. No one is saying that that performance was not a disgrace - it really fucking was @gkmacca - but this approach of trying to be City v2 when you don't have a cute passer all over the pitch is silly. We never played like that last season - it was all about control, and tonight we had none by playing such a high line, and really bad passing.
