Post Match: Villa Away, unpicking that Shit Show

His finishing in 2020 has been very poor. Had he scored on his early chance alone with Martinez and made it 1-1, then who knows how that would have ended..

Can't argue with that, and there needs to be improvement there, but his general play is still important to the balance of the front three and to the side as a whole. I'm not saying he's undroppable. What I am saying is that it may be more difficult to make up for the good things he does do than some on here seem to imagine.

Is he really still doing other good things?

He misplaces passes, gets shoved off the ball too.

I'm a big fan but can't help thinking a rest would do him and the team good.

I just watched the YouTube "highlights" which were basically the goals.

Now I'm not about to say that there weren't some very alarming things going on, however, it was a perfect storm (some of our own making) and there's no reason to suspect we won't get back to winning ways.

1. We lack leadership when Hendos not there and things aren't going right. Hendos back.

2. Yes we panicked and lost the plot, but only when the game was gone. Adrian gifted them the 1st goal, the second I know was preventable but still was an amazing finish. At this stage, weve all seen the team fight back and win on numerous occasions.

However, villa then had 3 deflected goals, and yes they could have been better defended, but none of them would have gone in without the frankly ridiculous deflections.

This knocked the stuffing out of us (it shouldn't) and its also knocked the stuffing out of this site.

3. We've barely lost in 2 years, with some of these faults in our play (risky high line, Adrian in goal, fullbacks who leave us exposed, gomez playing ) 1 defeat doesn't make us a bad team.

4. The preceding week we were on it and magnificent.

5. We have 9pts from 12 having played Chelsea and the Arse. In any other era this would be seen as a decent start.

6. None of our title rivals are above us. They have all had worse starts against easier opposition. We were never going to get 95+ points again.

7. We've strengthened in areas where we needed reinforcements although of course we could do with 1 or 2 more, but who ever has a perfect squad?

8. This will act as the biggest fucking boot up the backside and there's obviously no good side to get battered by, but better by Villa than most of the other Prem sides.

Time to learn from it (massively), and then move onto the next match remembering we are World and Premier league Champions.

Barkley could have easily had a hattrick in the first half. We were an utter shambles long before the 3 deflected goals.

Fair comment, and a rest could well do him good. Doing the team good is a more complicated issue because we won't find it easy, IMO of course, to replicate or replace what he brings to the setup when he IS on form. Others who step in may or may not be able to make the same kind of contribution than a Firmino firing on all cylinders makes, and we could then find ourselves having to alter the system which has served us so well.

Maybe. But there isn't just one system that works. There are signs already that Jota brings something different, something new, a directness, a power and pace that Firmino doesn't possess, though I am still a big fan of Bobby's and his incredible technical skills, stamina & vision (Mo's 2nd goal vs Villa).

Would a front three of Jota - Mo - Mane not be more potent at this moment in time? Would it not pose problems most teams could not cope with? Wouldn't it be great to be able to switch it around at a moment's notice, confounding the opposition. Two systems one team, now where have I heard that before.

Wouldn't disagree with any of that in principle, but in practice we're not yet set up for it. Perhaps the overriding lesson is that we need to work towards that.

Maybe we will be with the acquisition of Thiago. Klopp has oft stated how we switch formations mid-game, often 3-4 times a match. With the variety of midfielders we now have (plus the flexibility of our front three, and Mo's experience at CF) one has to think that it would be simple enough to implement. Hopefully we get to see it some time soon.
