Let's Push Things Forward
Moderator
- we finally won with Thiago starting
- Trent back to being marauding
- spurs really played into our hands and gave us loads of space - very strange in some ways from Mourinho who knows our weaknesses well
- Milner gave us the push forward we really needed
- who knows if we'd have won if that Son goal counted but we deserved it anyway
- get the fuck in

My pre game prediction was pretty on point

“What? Why is there even a thread on this game. We always beat Spurs without Lovern. 2-0. West Ham pre game is where it’s at. 😀

Sensational performance considering our injury woes and recent slump.
Big big game on Sunday now as we haven’t strung two good results in the league together in a while.

- Trent back to being marauding

It never fails to amaze, does it, how quickly form can click back in? Mike Brearley wrote a book on it but it was woeful waffle. I don't think anyone really knows how it works. But in the first half, Trent seemed sluggish, disinclined to move forward, really out of sorts. Then he gets a chance that even in that state of mind he can't resist, he scores, and suddenly those glorious curving balls into the box are back. Wonderful to see.

I think what we did different this time round was that after they scored their goal we did what we did best last season - which was to control the damn game rather than trying to score that third goal immediately and leaving ourselves open. Once the game was won - it was all about control of the game and not letting them in, it was our turn to defend in numbers. We did it well. I look back at the WBA, and Brighton games and think to myself why force it when we are ahead - let them work and we play for those transition moments. Also I totally disagree the idea that they Spurs made defensive fuckups - it was all about our timing and those mistakes were forced, something we did very well against them.

As for the defense - fuck knows what we do.

Confidence.

Confidence and playing with your subconscious rather than overthinking everything.

and suddenly those glorious curving balls ... are back. Wonderful to see.

One day... Dreamie will say something that makes sense.

Yes it was noticeable that we spent a period of time just knocking the ball around endlessly with no risky passes. We were able to sap their momentum and draw them out of the defensive shell that Mourinho uses. We didnt force the play and fall into the trap of getting frustrated trying to kill the game off. Thiago and Gini were excellent in that spell, they just popped up all over the pitch playing short passes and running down the clock.

To be fair Spurs were dreadful, they never looked remotely like getting back into it even before the 3rd goal. By the time Thiago went off theyd lost the will to live.

I had a strange experience - one I haven't had for 4-5 years, but which used to be a regular in my life. We're 2 goals up on about 87 or 88 minutes & I am as nervous as Mr Nervous from Nervous town.

Unwarranted as we were in complete control, but I could do nothing about the regression. Hopefully, now that box has been ticked, I can revert to the new Klopp normal and relax again

Haha that was going to be my one word response too.

That's just switching one conundrum with another. Which is why Dreambeliever MA chipped in by repeating it. How do you get form back, how do you get confidence back. 'You're out of form? Oh, just start being confident again. Next!' Yeah, thanks for that.

Didn't clock this - from other thread

Can debrief my thoughts more in a mo but in short

  • Isn't it great to see the front three seemingly making much more effort to pass and move for each other? It has felt the last few games that they have relied on a full back to find them and nothing else. Lots of great chances against a parked bus.
  • Milner in CM was great - his energy, pressing, runs and movement is key
  • Thiago more advanced - great use of his willingness to make progressive passes and move. I think having Gini as the DM made a huge difference in this game
  • Trent is back - kind of. Some great balls and the main difference was that he didn't just cross every ball - maybe he's been told to play with a bit more freedom and that is why he wasn't always hugging the touchline and did a lot more passing and a few more runs in the box than normal

Worrying about Matip's injury with the upcoming fixtures (and season), especially without knowing the extent of Fabinho's injury too.

Well you sort of missed that completely didn't you. I didn't suggest a method of recovering confidence, it was in answer to the question ... why did TAA suddenly switch on after a relatively average first half? Simple. He scored a goal and suddenly he was bouncing and not worrying about delivering the perfect cross, he reverted to what seems to come naturally to him when in form.

I thought we were imperious yesterday, could've and should've been 4/5-1

Interestingly Spurs did try a lot of the things that worked so well for all other opponents we've faced over the past 4 weeks or so, sat deep, tried to bypass the midfield pass with a long high ball into the wide channels and it almost paid off for them a couple of times, I'd like to think we're more aware of this counter to our playing style and can adjust, the midfield press worked very well at times but when it failed it almost always led to pressure being put upon the makeshift backline.

I've begged for Thiago to push further up the field and the returns of him doing so over the course of a season where almost obvious last night - connecting play quickly and pinging balls around with ease and less the defensive responsibilities, athlough he's made some great challenges over the 3/4 matches hes prominently appeared for us so its not as if defending is a particular weakness but having Gini put in the shift he did behind and ditto Milner certainly provided him with luxuries he hasn't been afforded too much of before now.

Milner, Henderson,Gini were phenomenal - Henderson playing a fucking perfect ball over the defence for Mane to square to Firmino for the opener is as close to 'what are missing without henderson in CM' we'll get.

Goals and should've been goal for the front 3 - Firmino played better than he has done in months and Mane (still looks perma shagged) & Salah both looked like their on an upward trajectory once more.

Throw in Jota in a couple of weekends time and hopefully some defensive cover and we can steady the ship and recover the season, we play City in a few weeks and win that and were right back into a title race! ( pending not fucking up against West Ham)

"Spot on"! Millions and millions of words written on the subect of form, masses and masses of research, and still there's no agreement about the process until Dougal comes along! Brilliant! Coming soon: a two word solution to the question, 'Why is there something rather than nothing?'

Is ok if something goes over your head, you don’t need to lose any sleep over it. Try reading the practice manual by Adam Young. It’s a good start and while a different sport discusses the topic brilliantly.
Or you know post a photo and some snide little scene you’ve created in your head as a retort.
