Philippe Coutinho, Part II

everything that you read about this lad , from italian based journos also , mentions the same thing - that he has bags of skill but needs to toughen up and improve his desire to succeed . Fine, maybe Rodgers is the man the address these things but right at this moment ,although i am looking forward to his signing, i can't help but wonder if another shitehouse is really what we need .

We're collecting them and it's not exactly working .

And this is going to be 50 odd million worth of players rodgers has signed in 2 windows , ok that's not city or chelsea money but it's a fair whack . Sooner or later excuses have to stop , these lads have to improve (i don't care what excuses you offer , allen , borini , assaidi and sahin before he left have offered fuck all really) because you can say all you want about theories and plans but lets be honest , most managers are judged by their signings .

That's a good point RedZeppelin, I can't say whether it's true of Coutinho since I haven't seen him play but we do have a number of players who play better when it doesn't matter since we're losing, or because we're winning comfortably. Players who impose their will and have quality are hard to find.

Yep, we're garnering plenty of sapphire but no steel.

We need a psycho mad-dog balls of steel centre midfielder who causes opponents to seek psychiatric help before they face him.

Anyone but Joey Barton please.

Good points.
I'd counter that and say that I'd prefer a signing like this, where the full potential, should he get his head straight would be phenomenal.
We can sign the 'honest' workman-like players like Adam and Downing, where we know their limits. Or we can go for a player like Coutinho who's potential we can't measure.
After all, we couldn't even get a sniff of a player like him if he was already at the top of his game.

Let's hope our manager and staff have it in them to make him one of the best.

The only thing that worries me about Coutinho is that he's a bit thin. He'll get shrugged off the ball pretty easily in the prem.
Those clips are not all recent ... they said he put on 10kg of muscle from his time in Spain.

Looks like it's happening. Moratti seems happy enough.

Transfer news: Inter Milan ready for Philippe Coutinho to exit for Liverpool

Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti believes the deal to take Philippe Coutinho to Liverpool will work out well for everyone.
It emerged earlier this week that the Reds were closing in on a move for the winger after agreeing a fee with the Serie A club.
And it appears Inter are already planning for the future without Coutinho after Moratti confirmed that they would look to use the money from his sale to strengthen the squad.
He told Sky Italia: "The deal for Coutinho to Liverpool

is an opportunity both for Inter and both for the player.

"We could be happy with the economic proposal and Coutinho could find the space he hasn't here. And then we'll have the opportunity to reinforce the team".
If the deal is completed, Coutinho would become the club's second signing of this transfer window following the £12million capture of Daniel Sturridge

from Chelsea.

Coutinho came through the youth system at Vasco da Gama before joining Inter at the age of 18.
He spent the second half of last season on loan at Espanyol,

where he worked with new Southampton

manager Mauricio Pochettino.
Pochettino's recent appointment at Saints led to speculation linking Coutinho with the South Coast club but it is understand he has expressed a preference for Anfield.

Ive said this before but its not about having a physical monster who will intimidate opponents, its about having the courage to want the ball and play the game properly. Utd dont have any physically imposing midfielders and they are fine, Barca have barely got a player over 5 feet and it makes no difference because they have talented players who want the ball and have the courage to play their game.

We definitely lack steel but its not a physical thing its a mental one, a team needs winners, players who demand the best of themselves and their team mates, right now we have too many players who dont want to stand up and be counted when the pressure is on. Dont know much about Coutinho but if hes another guy who only wants to play when we are 3-0 up then hes a waste of money, if he got the bottle to take his game to the opposition and not be intimidated, not go hiding when there is a game to be won then he is already more worthwhile than half the bedwetters we have in our squad at the moment.

Sadly the days of that sort of player are dead and buried, through FIFA and FA driving out the physicality out of the game, yes you don't want to see someone shirking out of tackles, but then again that depends on the circumstances, if you are 4-0 up in a league cup game there is no point risking an injury, if you are chasing a game in the PL then yes I expect it.
As for LZ to point to Allen , Borini , Assaidi and Şahin as examples is hardly reasonable, Allen is a decent player, yes he has had a dip in form and yes, playing with Lucas did not help him, but to write him off just yet is foolhardy, Borini, hardly played through a major injury, yes has a bit to do to convince, Assaidi clearly bought as a squad player for buttons (by todays standards) and Sahin, well come on, everyone was creaming their jeans at the prospect, at least Rodgers had the balls to cut the loan when it was not working , so again cost us the best part of fuck all.

People seem to be writing Coutinho off before he had a chance on the basis he is lightweight, I think we need to have a look at the lad before we jump to those conclusions.

As I said the game is changing look at Lucas for fucks sake, I know he is a fucking clumsy dolt in the tackle, but there is hardly a malicious bone in his body and he collects yellow cards for fun, the future is ball playing players and ball playing teams.

Slight or small players with skill have often succeeded...Zola, Juninho, Stirling... It will only matter if he's good enough.

I dont think Sterling is as good as we all thought he was.
I think hes a Wayne Routledge not a Gareth Bale

You dont think Sterling has been as good as first thought?
The lad has played 40 games and we're in january.
The form he's showing now is a result of playing to much and he's progressed fantastically this season.

Now, we can match him like we should do and his form from earlier in the season will return.
The kid will be amazing.

I think we all WANT him to be great mate, but even when he was first in the team he did mostly fuck all.
Hes just a kid and there is plenty of time for him to progress, but at the minute he looks a championship player not a premier league one.

He's just got a very average (compliment) end product currently - he is a decent PL player right now, and will hopefully get better.

He fucking wants to mate.
I said when there was all that contract shit that i dont care if he signs, everyone gave me shit, but im really not seeing it right now.
We'll see.

You may be right about the general direction of the game, but I don't think it hurts to have some physical presence in your side, not least to deal with teams like Stoke (and indeed Oldham) who feel they can bully us into submission. Yaya Toure and Dembélé spring to mind. What I'd give for a player like that right now.

More important though, as others have touched on, is that we have players who will stand up and be counted when the chips are down. Players who inspire those around them. Suarez, and (recently, at least) Gerrard, are the only ones I can think of (particularly now that Carra is largely uninvolved). Most of our team look like frightened children. Some of them are. I like the idea of Coutinho, and I hope he can fulfill his potential if he comes here, but if we don't add a bit of experience, and a bit of grit and determination to prop these players up, we're in danger of becoming another Arsenal.

It's an awful post if sterling proves him wrong. Atm his end product is borderline non existent

IMO Sterling won't be the player he can be until he gets a bit stronger, but I don't think his talent is in any doubt. He's def a long term PL player.

Have to say I agree with Oncy here. He was fucking gash yesterday. He offered practically nothing all game - As far as I can see he's been that way in practically every game I've seen him in. Still he's 18 so I'm not going to be too mean. Right now though he certainly doesn't warrant a starting place.

People have short term memories, for a few months of the season he was great, the end product was always something that was a bit hit and miss, but that's young players for yer. He'll be fine, he's no Routledge. He might not be a Ronaldo either but he's got the talent to be a top player.

He wasnt 'great'.
He was ok to decent but delivered very little. And now he is shite.

In reality he shouldnt be near our first team yet, he should be on loan at a championship club. I know we all hunger to get the kids in the team, but look at what that entails.
He shouldnt play again this season. A long rest and physical conditioning.
