Philippe Coutinho, Part II

People have short term memories, for a few months of the season he was great, the end product was always something that was a bit hit and miss, but that's young players for yer. He'll be fine, he's no Routledge. He might not be a Ronaldo either but he's got the talent to be a top player.

Memory is working fine thanks. He's been far from 'great' every time I've seen him. 2 goals in over 35 appearances = Meh. I agree the lad has potential but so far I've been massively underwhelmed.

I think your judgement is a bit clouded Oncy, he was great for quite a while, he also didn't look out of place when he got the call up to the England squad. Playing in a side that's spluttering all over the place hasn't helped. He needs a rest and to be playing in fits and starts and coming off the bench, I don't really see the point in relegating him to the Championship when he's already shown he can do it at this level. People expect the World from these players, and as suggested when he was playing well, it wouldn't take long before he started getting a kicking.

He's young and he's a bright talent who can make a difference now, he's just played a bit more than was probably wise through necessity.

My judgement isnt clouded, im not giving him a kicking, i know hes young and bright.
But he HASNT been great. He has been average to poor.
Which is fine, because hes a kid. But in our rush to have the next bright young thing in the team we have rushed him in FAR too early.
He should be playing a league down to build up his stamina, skill and experience.
Its not HIS fault hes in the team, but he shouldnt be.

If he was called sterlinho and playing in some under 18 tournament on Eurosport, no doubt you would be jizzing in your pants for us to sign him.

I think you'll find that I am one of the most avid supporters of buying young British talent, so yeah. Nonsense.

You also seem to be under the misapprehension that i dont want him at the club, I do, I just dont think he is first team ready.
And he certainly isnt worth 30k a week.

He was never ready for a long run in the team last season or this. He did deserve to start being given a few games but he was always going to hit a brick wall at some point and need a break. It would have been better to have given him a few short bursts of first team action, but it's perfectly understandable why it was tempting to indulge him a bit. No damage done so long as he now gets a breather.

Hopefully, when we sign Coutinho, we'll field a front 3 of him, Suarez and Sturridge. Then Sterling can be given the indefinite rest he needs, to work on his bollocks shooting, and final ball. Granted, he wasn't the only wank player yesterday, but he's like it every game.
Bring him on as a sub now and then for the rest of the season.

Yes, although the danger from now on is going to the opposite extreme and not playing him enough! It's a difficult balance for any manager to establish and maintain.

Sterling has been declining steadily since the start of the season. People just can't face the reality of it. Yesterday he was abysmal. Probably his worst display in a Liverpool shirt yet.

He definitely needs a rest. Use him as an "impact" sub or something. But right now, our front 3 should be Suarez, Sturridge and Downing.

@jeremy_LFC: Moratti: "Coutinho has been sold. We have not because of money but because of the necessity in other roles (central midfield, Paulinho)."

Interesting. Very.

Hopefully he can make as quick an impact as Studge.

Ever so slightly doubtful here but can not wait to be proved wrong.

Next a DM please. An ox with skills like a boss, preferably.

It seems like Rodgers doesn't believe in those. Why else would he not go for Diame or Wanyama who both wouldn't be that expensive. M'villa went for £8m.

Can't see coutinho making a quick impact at all. He is a player who i can't see coming good for at least a year.

What on earth are you basing that on?

What on earth are you basing that on?
Basing it on him struggling to settle in italy and coming to a completely different league than he has ever experienced. Plus the fact that he does seem a bit lightweight and i don't think he knows any english and him being very young so still very inexperienced.

Most players we sign don't make a quick impact, in fact most don't make any impact at all.
Sturridge has done ok. So did Suarez come to think of it. Both signings that rocketed out of the blocks so to speak.

I just find it amusing that some people (Glen C in this case) seem to have a negative outlook based (I'm assuming) on nothing at all. Maybe Glen C does know what he's talking about. Maybe he's a follower of Serie A or Inter Milan. Maybe he has followed Coutinho's career so far from Brazil to Italy to LFC and is therefore perfectly placed to form such an opinion. I don't know. Maybe he can enlighten us?

You could well be right - There is an awful lot of assumptions in that though. I think I just prefer to be positive. Maybe I'm just pumped to have an 'inho' playing for the mighty red men. 🙂

Interesting artical from the Mail

Just who is £8.5m Liverpool target Coutinho... and if he's that good, why are Inter willing to sell him?

Brazilian-born, Italian-owned, Spain-loaned and now en route to Liverpool… Where does he fit?
Philippe Coutinho Correia has never really fitted anywhere. Inter president Massimo Moratti has said the £8.5million move - pending work permit and medical - would represent a ‘great opportunity’ for the 20-year old, somewhat regretfully acknowledging how he seldom got a look in at the San Siro.
His Serie A career was in the balance before he went on loan to Espanyol at the end of 2011-12, but it gave him the first-team football he craved. It also provided a shop window for his skilful, confident style of play.

Incoming: How Coutinho could appear if he becomes a success at Anfield
There in Barcelona, Coutinho worked alongside new Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino and unsurprisingly Saints were in the race to sign the playmaker.
If he did well in Spain, don’t Inter want to keep him?
Inter have made it clear they want to furnish the coffers for new pursuits. Coutinho’s transfer fee might not seem a great deal but it is probably best for both player and club.
Moreover, Liverpool fans can be hopeful of him bringing something special. He played in 16 matches to help Espanyol to a mid-table finish, scoring five - just take a look at his set-pieces and ability to beat defenders.

Isn’t he crocked half the time?
His injury record should be a concern for Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers but to date, Coutinho hasn’t suffered with anything long-term. A small fracture in his tibia put him out for three weeks in October and shortly after returning to action, he was diagnosed with a pulled hamstring in mid-November.
The physical nature of the Premier League will present a new challenge but if he manages to remain fit, Coutinho could make all the difference and prove he’s worth virtually the same transfer fee as Galatasaray paid Inter for Holland midfielder Wesley Sneijder.
Whether he will be able to make the immediate impact at Anfield that Sneijder would have been capable of, is another matter. We may just have to be patient.

Instant impact: Liverpool had also looked at Galatasaray playmaker Wesley Sneijder
Where will he play for Liverpool?
It was pretty clear that when Rodgers deployed an ambitious 4-2-4 against Oldham Athletic on Sunday, it failed. What will suit Coutinho, however, is Rodgers’ inclination to experiment. With Daniel Sturridge, Raheem Sterling, Fabio Borini and, of course, Luis Suarez in attacking positions, Coutinho will be expected to drop in where he can to support the goal threat.
The midfielder can also play on the wing - an excellent position to exploit his pace, measured dribbling skills and good delivery. For Rodgers, he will also be a tremendous option to have on the bench.

So he’s rated?
Absolutely! Juan Jesus, the Brazilian and Inter centre half described him as ‘a phenomenon, like a Ferrari’. He developed his impressive style while playing for Brazil’s Under 16 side.
He was snapped up on contract by Inter when he was 16, but stayed on loan with his boyhood club, Vasco de Gama, until his 18th birthday.

A Juanderful talent: Inter defender Juan Jesus thinks highly of Coutinho
Anything else we need to know?
The fluffy-haired, 5ft 7in youngster, not unlike a South American Rory McIlroy, may have clocked up the air miles but it seems he is very much a settled man. He married his long-term girlfriend in Rio on December 27 (yes, he is only 20) and credits her for helping to keep him grounded.
Coutinho - an £8.5m bargain or a January import destined to fail? Only time will tell.
