Houllier came with a great reputation and won us trophies.

Evans was seen as the rightful continuation of the Boot Room

Hodge is a budge-faced old man with a reputation for winning fuck all in 3 decades of management, came 12th with Fulham, and was sacked by Blackburn with them bottom of the table

he's fucking hopeless
Fair enough. I dont recall either Evans or Houllier 'inspiring' me when they were appointed. In fact one of our most inspiring appointments was Souness, and that didnt work out too well.
I wasnt though.

I was a bit worried that we'd taken the 'bootroom' idea too far, and I was terrified by the Evans appointment..although that didnt work out too badly.

The only appointment I was ecstatic about was Rafa, actually. 🙁

That's very true. Maybe Budgie will be the least inspiring, but most successful managerial appointment in our history.

He's got half the job done already

But let's face it, he wasn't employed to inspire us, or win trophies, or restore our pride and passion.

He was employed to guide us steadily towards just above mid-table

50 years?

Does anhyone really think he's a worse manager than Souness?
There's no way to evaluate that. The fact is that Hodgson took this challenge knowing he'd otherwise not have a sniff, but he also knows success here would be the crowning achievement of his career.

We can all speak to his reputation thus far, which is neither embarassing nor spectacular. I didn't want him here, though there's some justification and logic for his selection in our shit situation, beyond him being some toadying yes man. No one can characterize his stint with us here this early on, but that's not going to stop anyone.

While being a yes man, clearly.

Has he complained *once* about the fact that Pursssslow lied about his 'player fund'?

That he wasn't allowed to reinvest all of the money from sales? That he was denied the cash to bring in the striker we all know we need?

Maybe not a yes man. Just essentially mute. Unless it's to talk about how we shouldn't expect to win anything and a draw was about as much as we could wish for at Birmingham.

He's a wizened old loser

We don't know what he was promised initially. I suspect fuck all.

It's hardly a surprise that there weren't amazing candidates lining up.

Also, all this about the 20M to spend, what precisely did you expect. You can't generate 20M from nowhere, everyone knew there'd be very little, if any money to spend. Why would Hodgson expect otherwise?

You act like he hasn't mentioned the shortage of money. He has. He's also stated that the owners need to go for us to move on (despite the fact it could be the end of his stint as manager). He also hasn't been scared to question players in the press, including ones he was in danger of losing. He's bigged players up when he's needed to and showed a huge amount of honesty too in being critical of others in a way that also prompted them to react in a positive way where it mattered (cf Babel).

Sure, no one could have been overawed with the appointment, but when he took over yourself and others said he was here to be a puppet for Purslow and co and to not rock the boat. You (and others) also said we would more than likely lose Torres and Gerrard and suggested we'd be unable to attract anyone decent.

Yeah, if only he'd MOAN a bit more, and maybe make a few sniping comments at the directors in the press... that'd be ace. Just like the good old days of last season under Rafa.

Hahaha. If it's one thing I don't miss it's the crazy press conferences were everything else but football was discussed.

Well, we don't have to go from one extreme to the other.

I think it's fair to say that at times Roy would benefit from saying a little less or at the very least being a little bit more tactful.
