4 missed out of 5 attempts this season. Thats shockingly bad. Cant expect to win on days like these when you put away 20% of your penalty kicks.

Lets hope Gerrard returns soon.

he missed his last one

Bit of an over reaction.

Dirk's very good at them.
Adam's very good at them.
Gerrard's good at them.
Suarez is good at them.

Carroll, who knows.

They've had their misses, time to start scoring again.

Either way, how can you expect to win matches like these when you miss 80% of your penalties. I know they are usually good penalty takers, but that doesnt help us right now.

How many penalties have we had this season?

If it's a small amount then in the grand scheme of things then it doesn't matter if we miss 80% of them.

5, missed 4.

Could have ment 2 extra points vs Sunderland, and 2 extra points vs Wigan today.

My point is that we've missed/had saved sooooooo many more shots at goal that the missed penalties are small fry. Certainly contributes the total missed though.

I think it's just a very annoying statistical freak. In reality we've got plenty of good penalty takers.

True, it could be that. Its even more annoying when we cant score a goal if our lives depended on it.

I think Suarez wanted to take it tonight - he seemed to want to but got outvoted. Dirk shoulda taken it.

I know how reliable Dirk has been in the past but with his failure to score all season I really don't think he was the obvious choice. If Suarez wanted it, I'd have given it to him. He won it after all. Plus South Americans are generally pretty ace at penalties.

You build a team which doesn't rely on penalties, because they don't happen regularly. Of course we should be looking to improve upon that stat, but it's not our greatest priority. Not by a long way.

I would have thought that with all their practices, top footballers would be able to pick the top right or left corners for penalties. These are areas impossible for goalies to reach even if they dived to the correct side.

Of course not. But thats beside the point. A penalty should be a goal. End off. And when you're involved in games like Sunderland and Wigan we're we could have won had we scored, then over a season it could mean 1-2 places higher on the table. Any of the top 4 miss 80% of their penalties?

Not sure about the latest % but back in Aug, the stat for conversion of penalty was low.

20% - Premier League penalty conversion rate in 2011-12, compared to an average of 77.7% over the past five seasons.

This season most penalty takers seem to blast the ball down the middle. It's as if there's been a collective failure of nerve. Keepers may as well stay central and gamble on another Lampard-style direct shot.

in training, no question. in a real match with proper pressure, not so easy.

...which is why most coaches I've ever heard speak about the subject will warn players off doing that and tell them to keep it low. One even said it's a myth that keepers have a harder job reaching the ball up there - on the contrary, he said they actually have a greater distance to cover to get down to ground level if the shot is placed hard and accurately in the corner.

There's just too much insight in this thread. Mind blown.

surely they cannot defy gravity? if you watch how goalie dive, it is usually low to left or right.

They probably do that because most penalties are (rightly) kept low. If the majority were hit high I'd expect the usual keeper's response to be different too.

I can't recall a single penalty that was struck with force and accuracy at the top corners being saved in the last year or so. It's a percentage game. Trouble is, it's a more technically difficult under pressure. If someone is cool and they hit it top corner, it's usually unstoppable.

That was the spot Stevie chose to shoot against Oldham. Not possible for the goalie to reach it even though he dived the correct direction.

My first thought was that he'd fluffed it off the bar.
[/quote]

yep, I thought he'd missed it as well.

Better to shoot for the top corners and miss than to have tame low shots saved by diving goalies. I am sure we could have gotten better results at the top corners than what we have done this year re penalties.

SGs penalty yesterday was utter perfection ... not even Lev Yashin at his best could have saved it.
