[article]At every stage – every summer – I was on the phone to Carra (Jamie Carragher) telling him to find a way to get me back.

“’Does Rafa want me?’ I’d say. ‘Does Kenny want me? Does Brendan want me?’ It was circumstance that stopped it happening. I spoke to Carra and tried to get (Rafa) Benitez to do something. I wanted to try to put it right somehow.

“When it became clear Benitez didn’t want to do a deal, I spoke again with (Alex) Ferguson. He was very positive about me. I was twenty-nine years old. Should I have decided to retire there and then?”[/article]

Happy birthday mate
🙂

You know what he served us well - but like so many in recent years they want the Madrid sunshine and then when The Lying Rag sets they wonder why they ae not playing regularly and why from being at a place where they are adored they are suddenly part of a team just making up the fucking numbers. It's because their good but not that great.

He should have said he was delighted to leave and never wanted to come back, then he'd be getting far less flak on here.

Such a shame the little legend turned out to be a complete bellend and scummer. I remember years ago Dunk on KT posted an April fools jape that he'd signed for United. Everyone laughed or mocked and some stupid dickheads believed him. Sigh. I will say though back in 1998 I loved the guy......🙁 What a fucking massive idiot he is. Some part of me thinks that Bacon Face only signed him on a free to be slap in the face to us....

Wow, that's just sad to see him so transparently lying. Something's wrong with him.

I'd still have rather we signed him than Morientes. Who knows... maybe things might have turned out differently.

Still remember the look of shock on his face as the Kop sang 'where were you in Istanbul' to him the first time he returned to Anfield with Newcastle. Fans don't forget or forgive people like him. Was always far more interested in England than Liverpool.

Sad case of unrequited love on Owen's part, this, love both for LFC and for himself. It's been reported before that we did consider buying him back when he left Real, and he could have made that happen by telling Real he'd only come to LFC. Instead he seems to have waited for us to match Newcastle's offer, which was doubtless closer to his own estimation of himself, and his classless digs at LFC while he was a Scummer showed he was still miffed that we hadn't fallen over ourselves to fetch him back. The club needs to have a word with itself for taking him (and McMoneyman) back on the staff.

I'd respect him now if he had never gone to Man United. The Madrid move while he went about it badly was understandable. We had been shit for years. If we were really interested in him he should have held out until January 2006 and forced Madrid's hand, but he was too concerned about his England spot (that he was never going to lose).

Davud G: good grief, yes. Boring as heck, and embarrassing with it when he tries to inject a bit of life into his delivery.

I thought we had tried to re-sign him from Real Madrid but were outbid by Newcastle United? Or is my memory faulty?

The way I heard it was similar: we did consider it and made an approach, but weren't prepared to go further when we found out what the Toon had bid.

Real definitely wanted rid, so Owen could have made the deal happen if he'd dug his heels in at that point. It was his choice not to.

I'm not sure it was quite as simple as that. Would Real have accepted his wishes to accept a lesser offer? I would've thought they would have said you'll either be sold to the highest bidder or you'll stay here in the reserves. As for the claims he makes now, well, Carra's never slow in putting people right publicly - presumably he'll correct whatever needs correcting.

I don't feel as angry about Owen as I used to. It's inevitable now that Fowler will get away with anything while Owen will be subjected to the most intense scepticism. Fowler's autobiography was an exercise in self-justification that included several dubious claims and allegations about people at the club in order to support his efforts to portray himself as a helpless and innocent victim, and fans seemed to swallow it all up. Owen is simply damned if he says something positive about LFC and damned if he says something negative. Behind the scenes when he was here Owen usually behaved superbly to young fans and behaved like a great representative of the club, but his coldish demeanour in public and the fact that London-based hacks were only interested in asking him about England gave him a reputation that was, I felt, a little unfair. There's no disputing that his once-reliable PR skills went tits up when he left, and he seemed as tactless and ill-advised as he once seemed preternaturally sure and sound, but if he wants to work for the club as an ambassador now, if he really does work at it, then it doesn't bother me at all. Maybe he should start by getting pissed and letting Ian Ayre play aeroplanes on his shoulders.

Real might have been tempted to say that but I've never been convinced they would ultimately have done so. They were no longer interested in playing Owen on a regular basis but he was still a lucratively saleable asset which would have plummeted in value if they'd stuck him in the stiffs. To me he should at least have tried if he was that focused on coming back here.

I can however buy the argument that, if appointing him now actually works well, there isn't a problem.

How could we justify paying 17m for a player we sold the year before for 8 mil ? Especially as IIRC Owen was asked to wait until the end of the transfer window when we would have a bit more leverage with the fee but refused.

Actually it was his treatment of Newcastle who had to pay his wages through all those injuries that reveals much about his character, and whyever would we sign a injury prone player for big wages when we had Torres in his pomp.
